Judah Warned against Egyptian Alliance
1 Woe to the rebellious children, says Yahweh, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin.

1 Alas, rebellious children, this is what the Lord says, You made a plan not through me and agreements not through my spirit, to add sins to sins | 1 Alas, rebellious children, this is what the Lord says, You made a plan not through me and agreements not through my spirit, to add sins to sins |
2 That walk to go down into Egypt, and haven’t asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!
2 those who walk to go down to Aigypt but didn’t ask me, to be helped by Pharaō and to be sheltered by the Aigyptians. | 2 those who walk to go down to Aigypt but didn’t ask me, to be helped by Pharaō and to be sheltered by the Aigyptians. |
3 Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.
3 For the shelter of Pharaō shall become a shame to you, and a reproach to those who trust in Aigypt. | 3 For the shelter of Pharaō shall become a shame to you, and a reproach to those who trust in Aigypt. |
4 For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes.
4 Because there are leaders in Tanis, evil messengers, they will become tired in vain | 4 Because there are leaders in Tanis, evil messengers, |
5 They were all ashamed of a people that couldn’t profit them, nor be a help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.
5 with a people who won’t profit them–neither for help nor for profit but for shame and reproach. | 5 they will become tired in vain with a people who won’t profit them–neither for help nor for profit but for shame and reproach. |
6 The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from where come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches on the shoulders of young donkeys, and their treasures on the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

6 The vision of the quadrupeds in the wilderness. In affliction and in distress, there are a lion and a lion’s cub, and asps and the offspring of flying asps, those who carry their wealth on donkeys and camels to a nation that shall not profit them for help, but for shame and reproach. | 6 The vision of the quadrupeds in the wilderness. In affliction and in distress, there are a lion and a lion’s cub, and asps and the offspring of flying asps, those who carry their wealth on donkeys and camels to a nation that shall not profit them. |
7 For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose; therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.
7 The Aigyptians shall benefit you in vain and with emptiness; announce to them that, “This consolation of yours is vain.” | 7 The Aigyptians shall benefit you in vain and with emptiness; announce to them that, “This consolation of yours is vain.” |
8 Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come forever and ever.
8 Now therefore sit, and write these things on a tablet and in a book, because these things shall be for days of times and even forever. | 8 Now therefore sit, and write these things on a tablet and in a book, because these things shall be for days of times and even forever. |
9 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that won’t hear the law of Yahweh.
9 Because they are a disobedient people, lying sons, who were not willing to hear the law of God, | 9 Because they are a disobedient people, lying sons, who were not willing to hear the law of God, |
10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not to us right things, speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits.
10 who say to the prophets, “Don’t disclose to us” and to those who see visions, “Don’t speak to us, but talk to us, and disclose to us another error, | 10 who say to the prophets, “Don’t disclose to us” and to those who see visions, “Don’t speak to us, but talk to us, and disclose to us another error, |
11 Get out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israēl to cease from before us.
11 and turn us away from this way; remove from us this path, and remove from us the Holy One of Israēl.” | 11 and turn us away from this way; remove from us this path, and remove from us the Holy One of Israēl.” |
12 Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israēl, Because you despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay on it.
12 Therefore thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israēl. Because you disobeyed these words and hoped in a lie and because you grumbled and have trusted in this word, | 12 Therefore thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israēl. Because you disobeyed these words and hoped in a lie and because you grumbled and have trusted in this word, |
13 Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly at an instant.
13 therefore this sin shall be for you like a wall falling suddenly when a strong city is captured, whose collapse comes suddenly, | 13 therefore this sin shall be for you like a wall falling suddenly when a strong city is captured, whose collapse comes suddenly, |
14 And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare; so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water in addition out of the pit.
14 and its collapse will be like the crushing of an earthenware vessel, becoming small fragments of a camper so that you can’t find among them a potsherd in which you can take up fire and in which you can skim off a little water. | 14 and its collapse will be like the crushing of an earthenware vessel, becoming small fragments of a camper so that you can’t find among them a potsherd in which you can take up fire and in which you can skim off a little water. |
15 For thus says Adonai Yahweh, the Holy One of Israēl; In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength; and you would not.

Thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israēl.
When you turn back and groan, then you shall be saved and know where you were;
when you depend on vain things, your strength became vain.
And you were not willing to hear, |
15
Thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israēl.
When you turn back and groan, then you shall be saved and know where you were;
when you depend on vain things, your strength became vain.
And you were not willing to hear, |
16 But you said, No; for we will flee on horses; therefore you shall flee: and, We will ride on the swift; therefore shall they who pursue you be swift.
16 but you said, “We will flee on horses;” therefore you shall flee! And you said, “We will be riders on swift animals ” therefore those who pursue you shall be swift. | 16 but you said, “We will flee on horses;” therefore you shall flee! And you said, “We will be riders on swift animals ” therefore those who pursue you shall be swift. |
17 One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five you shall flee: till you be left as a beacon on the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on a hill.
17 Because of the voice of one, a thousand shall flee, and because of the voice of five, many shall flee, until you are left like a pole on a mountain, like someone carrying a banner on a hill. | 17 Because of the voice of one, a thousand shall flee, and because of the voice of five, many shall flee, until you are left like a pole on a mountain, like someone carrying a banner on a hill. |
God Is Gracious and Just
18 And therefore will Yahweh wait, that he may be gracious to you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy on you; for Yahweh is a God of judgment: blessed are all they who wait for him.

And again God will wait to have compassion on you;
therefore he will be exalted to show mercy to you, because our Lord God is a judge, and where will you leave your glory? Blessed are those who remain with him. |
19 For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: you shall weep no more: he will be very gracious to you at the voice of your cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer you.
19 Because a holy people shall dwell in Siōn, and Jerousalēm wept with weeping, “Have mercy on me,” he will have mercy on you for the voice of your cry; when he saw, he listened to you. | 19 Because a holy people shall dwell in Siōn, and Jerousalēm wept with weeping, “Have mercy on me,” he will have mercy on you for the voice of your cry; when he saw, he listened to you. |
20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not your teachers be removed into a corner any more, but your eyes shall see your teachers.
20 And the Lord will give you bread of affliction and scant water, and those who lead you astray won’t come near you any more, because your eyes shall see those who lead you astray, | 20 And the Lord will give you bread of affliction and scant water, and those who lead you astray won’t come near you any more, because your eyes shall see those who lead you astray, |
21 And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk you in it, when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left.
21 and your ears shall hear the words of those behind you who have led you astray, who say, “This is the way; let us walk in it, whether to the right or to the left.” | 21 and your ears shall hear the words of those behind you who have led you astray, who say, “This is the way; let us walk in it, whether to the right or to the left.” |
22 You shall defile also the covering of your carved images of silver, and the ornament of your molten images of gold: you shall cast them away as a menstruating cloth; you shall say to it, Get you hence.
22 And you will get rid of the silver-covered and the gold-covered idols. You will make them small and scatter them like the indisposed fluid of a woman in menstruation, and like dung you will throw out. | 22 And you will get rid of the silver-covered and the gold-covered idols. You will make them small and scatter them like the indisposed fluid of a woman in menstruation, and like dung you will throw out. |
23 Then he shall give the rain of your seed, that you shall sow the ground in addition; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall your cattle feed in large pastures.
23 Then will there be rain for the seed of your land, and the bread of the produce of your land will be plenteous and rich. And on that day your cattle will graze in a fertile and spacious place; | 23 Then will there be rain for the seed of your land, and the bread of the produce of your land will be plenteous and rich. And on that day your cattle will graze in a fertile and spacious place; |
24 The oxen likewise and the young donkeys that ear the ground shall eat clean provender, which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan.
24 your bulls and oxen that work the land will eat chaff prepared with winnowed barley. | 24 your bulls and oxen that work the land will eat chaff prepared with winnowed barley. |
25 And there shall be on every high mountain, and on every high hill, rivers and streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.
25 On every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be running water, on that day when many perish and when towers fall. | 25 On every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be running water, on that day when many perish and when towers fall. |
26
Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that Yahweh binds up the breach of his people, and heals the stroke of their wound.
26 And the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold on the day when the Lord heals the destruction of his people, and he will heal the pain of your wound. | 26 And the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold on the day when the Lord heals the destruction of his people, and he will heal the pain of your wound. |
27 Behold, the name of Yahweh comes from far, burning with his anger, and the burden of it is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire.
27 Look! The name of the Lord comes after a long time; his wrath is burning; the oracle of his lips is with glory; his oracle is full of anger, and the anger of his wrath will devour like fire; | 27 Look! The name of the Lord comes after a long time; his wrath is burning; the oracle of his lips is with glory; his oracle is full of anger, and the anger of his wrath will devour like fire; |
28 And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity; and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err.
28 his breath, like water sweeping in a valley, will come up to the neck and be divided to trouble nations in vain deception, and deception will pursue them and grab them face-to-face. | 28 his breath, like water sweeping in a valley, will come up to the neck and be divided to trouble nations in vain deception, and deception will pursue them and grab them face-to-face. |
29 You shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goes with a pipe to come into the mountain of Yahweh, to the mighty One of Israēl.
29
Must you continually rejoice and continually enter my holy places as if you were keeping a feast? And as if you were rejoicing must you come in with a flute to the mountain of the Lord, to the God of Israēl? |
29
Must you continually rejoice and continually enter my holy places as if you were keeping a feast? And as if you were rejoicing must you come in with a flute to the mountain of the Lord, to the God of Israēl? |
30 And Yahweh shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall show the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.
30 And God will make the glory of his voice to be heard, and he will show the wrath of his arm with wrath and anger and a devouring flame; he will violently blast with lightning, and like water and hailstones falling down with violence. | 30 And God will make the glory of his voice to be heard, and he will show the wrath of his arm with wrath and anger and a devouring flame; he will violently blast with lightning, and like water and hailstones falling down with violence. |
31
For through the voice of Yahweh shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.
31 Because of the voice of the Lord, the Assyrians will be defeated through the stroke with which he will smite them. | 31 Because of the voice of the Lord, the Assyrians will be defeated through the stroke with which he will smite them. |
32 And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which Yahweh shall lay on him, it shall be with tabrets and harps; and in battles of shaking will he fight with it.
32 And this will happen to him all around, from where the hope of help in which he himself trusted came to him; they in turn will wage war against him with flutes and kitharas, | 32 And this will happen to him all around, from where the hope of help in which he himself trusted came to him; they in turn will wage war against him with flutes and kitharas, |
33 For Tophet is ordained of old; yes, for the king it is prepared; he has made it deep and large: the pile of it is fire and much wood; the breath of Yahweh, like a stream of brimstone, kindles it.

for you will be required before those
days;
and was it also prepared for you to reign
with a deep valley, wood piled, fire and wood in abundance? The wrath of the Lord is like a valley burning with sulphur. |
