Jerusalem Is Warned

1 Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! add you year to year; let them kill sacrifices.

1 Alas, city of Ariēl, against which David battled!
Gather produce year by year, for you will eat with Mōab.
1 Alas, city of Ariēl, against which David battled!
Gather produce year by year, for you will eat, you will eat with Mōab.

2 Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow; and it shall be to me as Ariel.

2 For I will distress Ariēl, and her strength and wealth shall be mine. 2 For I will distress Ariēl, and her strength and wealth shall be mine.

3 And I will camp against you all around, and will lay siege against you with a mount, and I will raise forts against you.

3 And I will surround you as David did; I will place siege-towers around you and set up movable-towers around you. 3 And I will surround you as David did; I will place siege-towers around you and set up movable-towers around you.

4 And you shall be brought down, and shall speak out of the ground, and your speech shall be low out of the dust, and your voice shall be, as of one that has a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and your speech shall whisper out of the dust.

4 Then your words shall be brought low into the ground; your words shall sink into the ground; your voice shall be like those who utter sounds from the ground, and your voice shall be weak near the soil. 4 Then your words shall be brought low into the ground; your words shall sink into the ground; your voice shall be like those who utter sounds from the ground, and your voice shall be weak near the soil.

5 Moreover the multitude of your strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passes away: yes, it shall be at an instant suddenly.

5 But the wealth of the ungodly shall be like dust from a wheel and like flinging chaff. And it shall be like an instant, suddenly, 5 But the wealth of the ungodly shall be like dust from a wheel and like flinging chaff. And it shall be like an instant, suddenly,

6 You shall be visited of Yahweh of armies with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

6 from the Lord Sabaōth, for there shall be a visitation with thunder and earthquake and a great voice, a rushing storm and a devouring flame of fire. 6 from the Lord Sabaōth, for there shall be a visitation with thunder and earthquake and a great voice, a rushing storm and a devouring flame of fire.

7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.

7 And it will be like the one who dreams in sleep. the wealth of all the nations; as many as marched against Ariēl and all that went to war against Jerousalēm and all who were gathered against her and were distressing her. 7 And it will be like the one who dreams in sleep. the wealth of all the nations; as many as marched against Ariēl and all that went to war against Jerousalēm and all who were gathered against her and were distressing her.

8 It shall even be as when a hungry man dreams, and, behold, he eats; but he awakens, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreams, and, behold, he drinks; but he awakens, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul has appetite; so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

8 And they shall be like those who hunger and eat in their sleep, and after rising, their dream is vain, and just as a thirsty person dreams that he is drinking and after rising is still thirsty and his soul has hoped for something vain, so shall the wealth of all the nations be, as many as have marched against Mount Siōn.

9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry you out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with beer.

9 Be weary and be stunned; have a hangover not from beer nor from wine! 9 Be weary and be stunned; have a hangover not from beer nor from wine!

10 For Yahweh has poured out on you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers has he covered.

10 Because the Lord has made you drink with a spirit of deep sleep; he will close their eyes and those of their prophets and of their leaders–the ones who see the hidden things. 10 Because the Lord has made you drink with a spirit of deep sleep; he will close their eyes and those of their prophets and of their leaders–the ones who see the hidden things.

11 And the vision of all is become to you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, please; and he says, I cannot; for it is sealed.

11 And all these sayings shall become for you like the words of this sealed book. If they give it to a learned man, saying, “Read these things,” then he will say, “I cannot read it, for it is sealed.” 11 And all these sayings shall become for you like the words of this sealed book. If they give it to a learned man, saying, “Read these things,” then he will say, “I cannot read it, for it is sealed.”

12 And the book is delivered to him who is not learned, saying, Read this, please; and he says, I am not learned.

12 And this book will be given into the hands of an unlearned man, and one will say to him, “Read this,” and he will say, “I am not literate.” 12 And this book will be given into the hands of an unlearned man, and one will say to him, “Read this,” and he will say, “I am not literate.”

13 Therefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.

13 The Lord said. These people draw near me; they honour me with their lips, while their heart is far from me, and in vain do they worship me, teaching man’s precepts and teachings. 13 The Lord said. These people draw near me; they honour me with their mouth and their lips, while their heart is far from me, and in vain do they worship me, teaching man’s precepts and teachings.

14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder; for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

14 Therefore look, I will proceed to remove this people. I will remove them and destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will hide the intelligence of the intelligent. 14 Therefore look, I will proceed to remove this people. I will remove them and destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will hide the intelligence of the intelligent.

15 Woe to those who seek deep to hide their counsel from Yahweh, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who sees us? And who knows us?

15 οὐαὶ οἱ βαθέως βουλὴν ποιοῦντες καὶ οὐ διὰ κυρίου· οὐαὶ οἱ ἐν κρυφῇ βουλὴν ποιοῦντες καὶ ἔσται ἐν σκότει τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν καὶ ἐροῦσιν τίς ἡμᾶς ἑώρακεν καὶ τίς ἡμᾶς γνώσεται ἡμεῖς ποιοῦμεν;
15 οὐαὶ οἱ βαθέως βουλὴν ποιοῦντες καὶ οὐ διὰ Κυρίου· οὐαὶ οἱ ἐν κρυφῇ βουλὴν ποιοῦντες καὶ ἔσται ἐν σκότει τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν καὶ ἐροῦσι· τίς ἑώρακεν ἡμᾶς;
καὶ τίς ἡμᾶς γνώσεται ἡμεῖς ποιοῦμεν;
15 Alas, those who make plans profoundly and not through the Lord!
Alas, those who make plans in secret, and their works will be in darkness!
And they will say, “Who has seen us, and who will know us or the things we do?”
15 Alas, those who make plans profoundly and not through the Lord!
Alas, those who make plans in secret, and their works will be in darkness!
And they will say, “Who has seen us, and who will know us or the things we do?”

16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay; for shall the work say of him who made it, He made me not? Or shall the thing framed say of him who framed it, He had no understanding?

16 οὐχ ὡς πηλὸς τοῦ κεραμέως λογισθήσεσθε;
μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι οὐ σύ με ἔπλασας;
τὸ ποίημα τῷ ποιήσαντι οὐ συνετῶς με ἐποίησας;
16 οὐχ ὡς πηλὸς τοῦ κεραμέως λογισθήσεσθε;
μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι αὐτό· οὐ σύ με ἔπλασας;
τὸ ποίημα τῷ ποιήσαντι· οὐ συνετῶς με ἐποίησας;
16 Won’t you be considered as the potter’s clay?
Shall the thing formed say to the one who formed it, “You didn’t form me,” or the thing made to the one who made it, “You made me with no understanding.”?
16 Won’t you be considered as the potter’s clay?
Shall the thing formed say to the one who formed it, “You didn’t form me,” or the thing made to the one who made it, “You made me with no understanding.”?

Blessing after Discipline

17 Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?

17 οὐκέτι μικρὸν καὶ μετατεθήσεται Λίβανος ὡς τὸ ὄρος τὸ Χερμὲλ καὶ τὸ ὄρος τὸ Χερμὲλ εἰς δρυμὸν λογισθήσεται; 17 οὐκέτι μικρὸν καὶ μετατεθήσεται Λίβανος, ὡς τὸ ὄρος τὸ Χέρμελ καὶ τὸ Χέρμελ εἰς δρυμὸν λογισθήσεται;
17 Isn’t it just a little while, and Libanon shall be changed like Mount Chermel, and Mount Chermel shall be considered as a forest? 17 Isn’t it just a little while, and Libanon shall be changed like Mount Chermel, and Mount Chermel shall be considered as a forest?

18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.

18 On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a scroll, and as for those who are in the darkness and those who are in the fog, the eyes of the blind shall see. 18 On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a scroll, and as for those who are in the darkness and those who are in the fog, the eyes of the blind shall see.

19 The meek also shall increase their joy in Yahweh, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israēl.

19 And the poor shall be glad with joy because of the Lord, and those despairing among men shall be satisfied with joy. 19 And the poor shall be glad with joy because of the Lord, and those despairing among men shall be satisfied with joy.

20 For the terrible one is brought to nothing, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off.

20 The lawless has failed, and the arrogant has perished, and those who acted lawlessly with evil have been destroyed; 20 The lawless has failed, and the arrogant has perished, and those who acted lawlessly with evil have been destroyed;

21 That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nothing.

21 even those who cause men to sin in word. And they will make all those who convict in the gates a cause of stumbling, and they have turned aside the just among the unjust. 21 even those who cause men to sin in word. And they will make all those who convict in the gates a cause of stumbling, and they have turned aside the just among the unjust.

22 Therefore thus says Yahweh, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacōb, Jacōb shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale.

22 Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the house of Jakōb, which he set apart from Abraham. Jakōb shall not be ashamed now, nor shall Israēl now change his face. 22 Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the house of Jakōb, which he set apart from Abraham. Jakōb shall not be ashamed now, nor shall Israēl now change his face.

23 But when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacōb, and shall fear Elohim of Israēl.

23 But when their children see my works, because of me they will sanctify my name; and they will sanctify the Holy One of Jakōb and will fear the God of Israēl. 23 But when their children see my works, because of me they will sanctify my name; and they will sanctify the Holy One of Jakōb and will fear the God of Israēl.

24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they who murmured shall learn doctrine.

24 And those who stray in spirit will know understanding, and those who grumble will learn to obey, and the faltering tongues will learn to speak peace. 24 And those who stray in spirit will know understanding, and those who grumble will learn to obey, and the faltering tongues will learn to speak peace.
