Ephraim’s Captivity Predicted

1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of those who are overcome with wine!

1 Woe to the crown of pride, the hired workers of Ephraim, the flower that has fallen out of its glory on the top of the stout mountain; those who are drunk without wine. 1 Woe to the crown of pride, the hired workers of Ephraim, the flower that has fallen out of its glory on the top of the stout mountain; those who are drunk without wine.

2 Behold, the Lord has a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

2 Look! The wrath of the Lord is a strong and severe thing, like hail pelting down where there is no shelter; violently pelting down like a great flood that sweeps a country, it will give rest to the land.
With hands
2 Look! The wrath of the Lord is a strong and severe thing, like hail pelting down where there is no shelter; violently pelting down like a great flood that sweeps a country, it will give rest to the land.
With hands

3 The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet.

3 and by the feet, the crown of pride (the hired workers of Ephraim) will be trampled 3 and by the feet, the crown of pride (the hired workers of Ephraim) will be trampled

4 And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he who looks on it sees, while it is yet in his hand he eats it up.

4 And the flower that has fallen from its glorious hope on the topmost of the lofty mountain will be like an early fig; the one who sees it will want to swallow it up before he takes it into his hand. 4 And the flower that has fallen from its glorious hope on the topmost of the lofty mountain will be like an early fig; the one who sees it will want to swallow it up before he takes it into his hand.

5 In that day shall Yahweh of armies be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, to the residue of his people,

5 In that day the Lord Sabaōth will be the crown of hope, which is woven of glory, to the remnant of my people. 5 In that day the Lord Sabaōth will be the crown of hope, which is woven of glory, to the remnant of my people.

6 And for a spirit of judgment to him who sits in judgment, and for strength to those who turn the battle to the gate.

6 They will be left for a spirit of judgment, for judgment and strength in forbidding to kill. 6 They will be left for a spirit of judgment, for judgment and strength in forbidding to kill.

7 But they also have erred through wine, and through beer are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through intoxicant, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through intoxicant; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

7 For these have gone astray with wine; they went astray because of beer; priest and prophet lost their senses because of wine; they were shaken up from the drunkenness of beer; they went astray; this is a vision. 7 For these have gone astray with wine; they went astray because of beer; priest and prophet lost their senses because of beer; they drank because of wine; they were shaken up from the drunkenness of beer; they went astray; this is a vision.

8 For all tables are full of vomit and filth, so that there is no place clean.

8 A curse will devour this advice, for this advice is for the sake of greed. 8 A curse will devour this advice, for this advice is for the sake of greed.

9 Whom he shall teach knowledge? And whom he shall make to understand doctrine? Those who are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

9 τίνι ἀνηγγείλαμεν κακὰ καὶ τίνι ἀνηγγείλαμεν ἀγγελίαν, οἱ ἀπογεγαλακτισμένοι ἀπὸ γάλακτος, οἱ ἀπεσπασμένοι ἀπὸ μαστοῦ; 9 τίνι ἀνηγγείλαμεν κακὰ καὶ τίνι ἀνηγγείλαμεν ἀγγελίαν, οἱ ἀπογεγαλακτισμένοι ἀπὸ γάλακτος, οἱ ἀπεσπασμένοι ἀπὸ μαστοῦ;
9 To whom did we declare evil things, and to whom did we declare a message?
Those who are weaned from milk, those torn away from the breast?
9 To whom did we declare evil things, and to whom did we declare a message?
Those who are weaned from milk, those torn away from the breast?

10 For precept must be on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, and there a little.

10 Expect affliction on affliction, hope on hope, yet a little, yet a little, 10 Expect affliction on affliction, hope on hope, yet a little, yet a little,

11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

11 because of contempt from lips, through a different tongue, because they will speak to this people, 11 because of contempt from lips, through a different tongue, because they will speak to this people,

12 To whom he said, This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

12 saying to them, This is the rest for the hungry, and this is the destruction; yet they didn’t want to hear. 12 saying to them, This is the rest for the hungry, and this is the destruction; yet they didn’t want to hear.

13 But the word of Yahweh was to them precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

13 And the oracle of the Lord God will be to them affliction on affliction, hope on hope, yet a little, yet a little, in order that they may go and fall backward, and they will be in danger and crushed and caught. 13 And the oracle of the Lord God will be to them affliction on affliction, hope on hope, yet a little, yet a little, in order that they may go and fall backward, and they will be in danger and crushed and caught.

Judah Is Warned

14 Therefore hear the word of Yahweh, you scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.

14 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you afflicted men and leaders of this people in Jerousalēm. 14 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you afflicted men and leaders of this people in Jerousalēm.

15 Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come to us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves.

15 Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with Hades and agreements with death, if a rushing storm passes through, it won’t come to us; we have placed falsehood our hope, and in falsehood we will be sheltered”; 15 Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with Hades and agreements with death, if a rushing storm passes through, it won’t come to us; we have placed falsehood our hope, and in falsehood we will be sheltered”;

16 Therefore thus says Adonai Yahweh, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he who believes shall not make haste.

16 therefore thus says the Lord, Look! For the foundations of Siōn, I will lay a valuable, choice stone, a precious cornerstone for its foundations, and the one who believes in him won’t be put to shame. 16 therefore thus says the Lord, Look! For the foundations of Siōn, I will lay a valuable, choice stone, a precious cornerstone for its foundations, and the one who believes in him won’t be put to shame.

17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

17 And I will turn judgment into hope, and my mercy will become balance weights, and as for you who trust vainly in falsehood, I tell you that the storm won’t pass you by, 17 And I will turn judgment into hope, and my mercy will become balance weights, and as for you who trust vainly in falsehood, I tell you that the storm won’t pass you by,

18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then you shall be trodden down by it.

18 lest it also take away your covenant of death.
And your hope regarding Hades won’t remain; if a rushing storm comes, you will be trampled down by it.
18 lest it also take away your covenant of death.
And your hope regarding Hades won’t remain; if a rushing storm comes, you will be trampled down by it.

19 From the time that it goes forth it shall take you; for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night; and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

19 When it passes by, it will take you; early, early in the day it will pass by, and at night it will be an evil hope; learn to hear. 19 When it passes by, it will take you; early, early in the day it will pass by, and at night it will be an evil hope; learn to hear.

20 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

20 We are restricted and unable to fight, and we ourselves are too weak to be gathered together. 20 We are restricted and unable to fight, and we ourselves are too weak to be gathered together.

21 For Yahweh shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

21 He will rise up as a mountain of ungodly ones, and he will be in the valley of Gabaōn; with wrath he will do his works; a bitter deed. But his wrath will be employed strangely, and his bitterness will be strange. 21 He will rise up as a mountain of ungodly ones, and he will be in the valley of Gabaōn; with wrath he will do his works; a bitter deed. But his wrath will be employed strangely, and his bitterness will be strange.

22 Now therefore don’t be mockers, lest your bands be made strong; for I have heard from Adonai Yahweh of armies a consumption, even determined on the whole earth.

22 And as for you, don’t rejoice, nor let your bonds become strong, because I have heard from the Lord Sabaōth of deeds finished and cut short, which he will perform on the whole land. 22 And as for you, don’t rejoice, nor let your bonds become strong, because I have heard from the Lord Sabaōth of deeds finished and cut short, which he will perform on the whole land.

23 Give ear, and hear my voice; listen, and hear my speech.

23 Give ear, and hear my voice; pay attention, and hear my words. 23 Give ear, and hear my voice; pay attention, and hear my words.

24 Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? Does he open and break the clods of his ground?

24 μὴ ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν μέλλει ἀροτριῶν;
ἀροτριᾶν σπόρον προετοιμάσει πρὶν ἐργάσασθαι τὴν γῆν;
24 μὴ ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀροτριάσει ἀροτριῶν;
σπόρον προετοιμάσει πρὶν ἐργάσασθαι τὴν γῆν;
24 Will the plowman plow the whole day?
Will he prepare the seed prior to working the land?
24 Will the plowman plow the whole day?
Will he prepare the seed prior to working the land?

25 When he has made plain the face of it, does he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and rie in their place?

25 οὐχ ὅταν ὁμαλίσῃ αὐτῆς τὸ πρόσωπον, τότε σπείρει μικρὸν μελάνθιον καὶ κύμινον καὶ πάλιν σπείρει πυρὸν καὶ κριθὴν καὶ ζέαν ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις σου; 25 οὐχ ὅταν ὁμαλίσῃ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῆς, τότε σπείρει μικρὸν μελάνθιον κύμινον καὶ πάλιν σπείρει πυρὸν καὶ κριθὴν καὶ κέγχρον καὶ ζέαν ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις σου;
25 When he has leveled its surface, doesn’t he then sow small dill and cumin and again sow wheat and barley and spelt in your borders? 25 When he has leveled its surface, doesn’t he then sow small dill and cumin and again sow wheat and barley and spelt in your borders?

26 For his God instructs him to discretion, and teaches him.

26 So you will be instructed by the judgment of your God, and will rejoice. 26 So you will be instructed by the judgment of your God, and will rejoice.

27 For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about on the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.

27 For the dill is not purified with harshness, nor will a cart wheel roll over the cumin, but the dill is shaken with a rod, and the cumin 27 For the dill is not purified with harshness, nor will a cart wheel roll over the cumin, but the dill is shaken with a rod,

28 Bread grain is bruised; because he won’t ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.

28 will be eaten with bread.
For I won’t be angry with you forever, nor will the voice of my bitterness trample you.
28 and the cumin will be eaten with bread.
For I won’t be angry with you forever, nor will the voice of my bitterness trample you.

29 This also comes forth from Yahweh of armies, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.

29 And these wonders came forth from the Lord Sabaōth; take advice; lift up a vain appeal. 29 And these wonders came forth from the Lord Sabaōth; take advice; lift up a vain appeal.
