The Glorious Future
1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.
1 For look, a just king will reign, and leaders will rule with judgment. | 1 For look, a just king will reign, and leaders will rule with judgment. |
2
And a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
2 The man will be hiding his words and will be hidden as from rushing water, and he will appear in Siōn like a rushing river, glorious in a thirsty land. | 2 The man will be hiding his words and will be hidden as from rushing water, and he will appear in Siōn like a rushing river, glorious in a thirsty land. |
3 And the eyes of those who see shall not be dim, and the ears of those who hear shall listen.
3 Then no longer will they trust in men, but they will lend their ears to hear. | 3 Then no longer will they trust in men, but they will lend their ears to hear. |
4 The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.
4 The heart of the weak will attend itself to hear, and the stammering tongues will suddenly learn to speak peace. | 4 The heart of the weak will attend itself to hear, and the stammering tongues will suddenly learn to speak peace. |
5 The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.
5 And they will no longer tell the fool to rule, and no longer will your subordinates say, “Be quiet!” | 5 And they will no longer tell the fool to rule, and no longer will your subordinates say, “Be quiet!” |
6 For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against Yahweh, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
6 For the fool will speak folly, and his heart will think vain things in order to accomplish lawless things and to speak error against the Lord, in order to scatter hungry souls and to empty the souls that thirst. | 6 For the fool will speak folly, and his heart will think vain things in order to accomplish lawless things and to speak error against the Lord, in order to scatter hungry souls and to empty the souls that thirst. |
7 The instruments also of the churl are evil: he devises wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks right.
7 For the advice of the evil ones will plan lawless things, to destroy the humble with unjust words and to scatter the words of the humble in judgment. | 7 For the advice of the evil ones will plan lawless things, to destroy the humble with unjust words and to scatter the words of the humble in judgment. |
8
But the liberal devises liberal things; and by liberal things he shall stand.
8 But the godly have planned intelligent things, and this advice will remain. | 8 But the godly have planned intelligent things, and this advice will remain. |
9 Rise up, you women that are at ease; hear my voice, you careless daughters; give ear to my speech.
9 Rise up, you wealthy women, and hear my voice; you daughters in hope, hear my words. | 9 Rise up, you wealthy women, and hear my voice; you daughters in hope, hear my words. |
10 Many days and years you shall be troubled, you careless women; for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.
10 Make a memory of the days of a year in pain with hope; the vintage has been spent; the sowing has ended and will no longer come. | 10 Make a memory of the days of a year in pain with hope; the vintage has been spent; the sowing has ended and will no longer come. |
11 Tremble, you women that are at ease; be troubled, you careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth on your loins.
11 Be amazed; be grieved, you confident women; undress; become naked; gird sackcloth on your loins, | 11 Be amazed; be grieved, you confident women; undress; become naked; gird sackcloth on your loins, |
12 They shall lament for the teats, for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.
12 and beat on your breasts for a desired field and for a fruitful grapevine. | 12 and beat on your breasts for a desired field and for a fruitful grapevine. |
13 Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yes, on all the houses of joy in the joyous city.
13 As for the land of my people, thistles and grass will arise, and gladness will be removed from every house. A wealthy city, | 13 As for the land of my people, thistles and grass will arise, and gladness will be removed from every house. |
14 Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks;
14 deserted homes. They will give up a city’s wealth and desirable homes. And the villages will be caves forever, the gladness of wild donkeys, a pasture of shepherds, | 14 A wealthy city, deserted homes. They will give up a city’s wealth and desirable homes. And the villages will be caves forever, the gladness of wild donkeys, a pasture of shepherds, |
15 Until the spirit be poured on us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

16
Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field.
16 Then judgment will rest in the wilderness, and righteousness dwells in Carmēl. | 16 Then judgment will rest in the wilderness, and righteousness dwells in Carmēl. |
17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.
17 And the works of righteousness will be peace, and righteousness will support rest, and they will be confident forever. | 17 And the works of righteousness will be peace, and righteousness will support rest, and they will be confident forever. |
18 And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;
18 His people will dwell in a city of peace, and reside in confidence and rest with wealth. | 18 His people will dwell in a city of peace, and reside in confidence and rest with wealth. |
19 When it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.

19 If hail descends, it won’t come on you. And those who reside in the forests will be confident, like those in the plain. | 19 If hail descends, it won’t come on you. And those who reside in the forests will be confident, like those in the plain. |
20 Blessed are you who sow beside all waters, that send forth to that place the feet of the ox and the donkey.
