Job: You Friends are Sorry Comforters
1 Then Job answered and said,
| 1 But Job answered and said, | 1 But Job answered and said, |
2 I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are you all.
| 2 I have heard many such things: poor comforters are you all. | 2 I have heard many such things: poor comforters are you all. |
3 Shall vain words have an end? Or what emboldens you that you answer?
| 3
τί
| 3 What! is there any reason in vain words? Or what will hinder you from answering? | 3 What! is there any reason in vain words? Or what will hinder you from answering? |
4 I also could speak as you do: if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you.
| 4 I also will speak as you do: if indeed your soul were in my soul’s stead, then would I insult you with words, and I would shake my head at you. | 4 I also will speak as you do: if indeed your soul were in my soul’s stead, then would I insult you with words, and I would shake my head at you. |
5 But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should assuage your grief.
| 5 And would there were strength in my mouth, and I would not spare the movement of my lips. | 5 And would there were strength in my mouth, and I would not spare the movement of my lips. |
Job: God Has Shattered Me
6 Though I speak, my grief is not assuaged; and though I forbear, what am I eased?
| 6 For if I should speak, I shall not feel the pain of my wound; and if I should be silent, how shall I be wounded the less? | 6 For if I should speak, I shall not feel the pain of my wound; and if I should be silent, how shall I be wounded the less? |
7 But now he has made me weary: you have made desolate all my company.
| 7 But now he has made me weary, and a worn-out fool; and you have laid hold of me. | 7 But now he has made me weary, and a worn-out fool; and you have laid hold of me. |
8 And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me; and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face.
| 8 My falsehood has become a testimony, and has risen up against me: it has confronted me to my face. | 8 My falsehood has become a testimony, and has risen up against me: it has confronted me to my face. |
9 He tears me in his wrath, who hates me: he gnashes on me with his teeth; my enemy sharpens his eyes on me.
| 9 In his anger he has cast me down; he has gnashed his teeth on me: the weapons of his robbers have fallen on me. | 9 In his anger he has cast me down; he has gnashed his teeth on me: the weapons of his robbers have fallen on me. |
10 They have gaped on me with their mouth; they have smitten me on the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me.
| 10 He has attacked me with the keen glances of his eyes; with his sharp spear he has smitten me down on my knees; and they have run on me with one accord. | 10 He has attacked me with the keen glances of his eyes; with his sharp spear he has smitten me down on my knees; and they have run on me with one accord. |
11 God has delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.
| 11 For the Lord has delivered me into the hands of unrighteous men, and thrown me on the ungodly. | 11 For the Lord has delivered me into the hands of unrighteous men, and thrown me on the ungodly. |
12 I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.
| 12 When I was at peace he distracted me: he took me by the hair of the head, and plucked it out: he set me up as a mark. | 12 When I was at peace he distracted me: he took me by the hair of the head, and plucked it out: he set me up as a mark. |
13 His archers surround me all around, he clings my insides asunder, and doesn’t spare; he pours out my gall on the ground.
| 13 They surrounded me with spears, aiming at my insides: without sparing me they poured out my gall on the ground. | 13 They surrounded me with spears, aiming at my insides: without sparing me they poured out my gall on the ground. |
14 He breaks me with breach on breach, he runs on me like a giant.
| 14 They overthrew me with fall on fall: they ran on me in their might. | 14 They overthrew me with fall on fall: they ran on me in their might. |
15 I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust.
| 15 They sewed sackcloth on my skin, and my strength has been spent on the ground. | 15 They sewed sackcloth on my skin, and my strength has been spent on the ground. |
16 My face is foul with weeping, and my eyelids is the shadow of death;
| 16 My belly has been parched with wailing, and darkness is on my eyelids. | 16 My belly has been parched with wailing, and darkness is on my eyelids. |
17 Not for any injustice in my hands: also my prayer is pure.
| 17 Yet there was no injustice in my hands, and my prayer is pure. | 17 Yet there was no injustice in my hands, and my prayer is pure. |
18 Oh earth, don’t cover you my blood, and let my cry have no place.
| 18 Earth, don’t cover over the blood of my flesh, and let my cry have no place. | 18 Earth, don’t cover over the blood of my flesh, and let my cry have no place. |
19 Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.
| 19 And now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high. | 19 And now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high. |
20 My friends scorn me; but my eye pours out tears to God.
| 20 Let my supplication come to the Lord, and let my eye weep before him. | 20 Let my supplication come to the Lord, and let my eye weep before him. |
21 Oh that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his neighbour!
| 21 Oh that a man might plead before the Lord, even as the son of man with his neighbor! | 21 Oh that a man might plead before the Lord, even as the son of man with his neighbor! |
22 When a few years are come, then I shall go the way from where I shall not return.
| 22 But my years are numbered and their end come, and I shall go by the way by which I shall not return. | 22 But my years are numbered and their end come, and I shall go by the way by which I shall not return. |
