The Enemy’s Plot

1 Now it happened, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it; (though at that time I hadn’t set up the doors on the gates;)

1 Now it happened, when Sanaballat, and Tōbia, and Gēsam the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I built the wall, and that there was no gap left in it (but up to that time, I hadn’t set up the doors on the gates); 1 Now it happened, when Sanaballat, and Tōbia, and Gēsam the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I built the wall, and that there was no gap left in it (but up to that time, I hadn’t set up the doors on the gates);

2 That Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, Come, let’s meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.

2 that Sanaballat and Gesam sent to me, saying, “Come and let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they were thinking to do me harm. 2 that Sanaballat and Gesam sent to me, saying, “Come and let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they were thinking to do me harm.

3 And I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?

3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, and I will not be able to come down, lest the work stops. Whenever I finish it, I will come down to you.” 3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, and I will not be able to come down, lest the work stops. Whenever I finish it, I will come down to you.”

4 Yet they sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

4 And they sent to me again like this word; and I sent to them according to this. 4 And they sent to me again like this word; and I sent to them according to this.

5 Then sent Sanballat his servant to me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;

5 Then Sanaballat sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. 5 Then Sanaballat sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand.

6 In which was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews think to rebel; for which cause you build the wall, that you may be their king, according to these words.

6 And in it was written, “It was heard among the nations that you and the Joudeans are thinking to rebel, therefore you are building the wall, and you are becoming a king for them. 6 And in it was written, “It was heard among the nations that you and the Joudeans are thinking to rebel, therefore you are building the wall, and you are becoming a king for them.

7 And you have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah; and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let’s take counsel together.

7 And to these things, you have set up prophets for yourself, in order that you might sit in Hierousalēm as a king over Jouda; and now these words will be reported to the king. Now then, come, let’s deliberate together.” 7 And to these things, you have set up prophets for yourself, in order that you might sit in Hierousalēm as a king over Jouda; and now these words will be reported to the king. Now then, come, let’s deliberate together.”

8 Then I sent to him, saying, There are no such things done as you say, but you invented them out of your own heart.

8 And I sent to him, saying, “It hasn’t happened according to these words which you are saying, because you falsify them out of your heart.” 8 And I sent to him, saying, “It hasn’t happened according to these words which you are saying, because you falsify them out of your heart.”

9 For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it don’t be done. Now therefore, Oh God, strengthen my hands.

9 For they all were trying to frighten us, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from this work, and it won’t be done.” Now therefore I strengthened my hands. 9 For they all were trying to frighten us, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from this work, and it won’t be done.” Now therefore I strengthened my hands.

10 Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let’s meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let’s shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to slay you; yes, in the night will they come to slay you.

10 And I entered into the house of Semei the son of Dalaia the Son of Meētabēl, and he was confined, and he said, “Let’s gather together in the house of God, in the midst of it, and let’s shut its doors; because they are coming by night to murder you.” 10 And I entered into the house of Semei the son of Dalaia the Son of Metabeēl, and he was confined, and he said, “Let’s gather together in the house of God, in the midst of it, and let’s shut its doors; because they are coming by night to murder you.”

11 And I said, Should such a man as I flee? And who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I won’t go in.

11 καὶ εἶπα Τίς ἐστιν ἀνήρ, ὃς εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ ζήσεται; 11 καὶ εἶπα· τίς ἐστιν ἀνήρ, ὃς εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ ζήσεται;
11 And I said, “Who is the man who will enter into the house and live?” 11 And I said, “Who is the man who will enter into the house and live?”

12 And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me; for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

12 And I perceived, and, behold, God had not sent him, because the prophecy was a message against me; and Tōbia and Sanaballat had hired. 12 And I perceived, and, behold, God had not sent him, because the prophecy was a message against me; and Tōbia and Sanaballat had hired.

13 Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

13 a crowd against me so that I might be frightened, and do this, and sin, and become a bad name for them so they might insult me. 13 a crowd against me so that I might be frightened, and do this, and sin, and become a bad name for them so they might insult me.

14 My God, think on Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.

14 Oh God, remember Tōbia and Sanaballat, according to these acts of him, also the prophetess Nōadia, and the rest of the prophets who were trying to frighten me. 14 Oh God, remember Tōbia and Sanaballat, according to these acts of him, also the prophetess Nōadia, and the rest of the prophets who were trying to frighten me.

The Wall Is Finished

15 So the wall was finished in the 25th day of the month Elul, in 52 days.

15 So the wall was finished on the 25th day of the month Eloul, in 52 days. 15 So the wall was finished on the 25th day of the month Eloul, in 52 days.

16 And it happened, that when all our enemies heard of it, and all the heathen who were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.

16 And it happened, when all our enemies heard, and all the nations around us were afraid, and great fear fell on their eyes, and they knew that by the hand of our God this work came to be finished. 16 And it happened, when all our enemies heard, and all the nations around us were afraid, and great fear fell on their eyes, and they knew that by the hand of our God this work came to be finished.

17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them.

17 And in those days, letters from many influential people of Jouda proceded to Tōbia and those of Tōbia went to them. 17 And in those days, letters from many influential people of Jouda proceded to Tōbia and those of Tōbia went to them.

18 For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.

18 Because many in Jouda were bound to him by an oath, because he was son-in-law of Sechenias the son of Ērae; and Jōanan his son had taken the daughter of Mesoulam the son of Barachia to wife. 18 Because many in Jouda were bound to him by an oath, because he was son-in-law of Sechenias the son of Ērae; and Jōnan his son had taken the daughter of Mesoulam the son of Barachia to wife.

19 Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

19 And they were saying his words to me, and were carrying out my words to him; and Tōbia sent letters to frighten me. 19 And they were saying his words to me, and were carrying out my words to him; and Tōbia sent letters to frighten me.
