Battle with Ammonites
1 Now it happened after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.
1 And it happened after this, that Naas the king of the children of Ammōn died, and Anan his son reigned after him. | 1 And it happened after this, that Naas the king of the children of Ammōn died, and Anan his son reigned after him. |
2 And David said, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

2 And David said, “I will act kindly toward Anan the son of Naas, as his father acted kindly toward me.” And David sent messengers to console with him on the death of his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammōn to Anan, to comfort him. | 2 And David said, “I will act kindly toward Anan the son of Naas, as his father acted kindly toward me.” And David sent messengers to console with him on the death of his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammōn to Anan, to comfort him. |
3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Do you think that David honours your father, that he has sent comforters to you? Are not his servants come to you for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?
3 And the chiefs of the children of Ammōn said to Anan, “Is it to honour your father before you, that David has sent comforters to you? Haven’t his servants come to you that they might search the city, and to spy out the land?” | 3 And the chiefs of the children of Ammōn said to Anan, “Is it to honour your father before you, that David has sent comforters to you? Haven’t his servants come to you that they might search the city, and to spy out the land?” |
4 Then Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
4 And Anan took the servants of David, and shaved them, and cut off the half of their garments as far as their tunic, and sent them away. | 4 And Anan took the servants of David, and shaved them, and cut off the half of their garments as far as their tunic, and sent them away. |
5 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, stay at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

5 And there came men to report to David concerning the men; and he sent to meet them, for they were greatly disgraced; and the king said, Dwell in Jerichō until your beards have grown, and return. | 5 And there came men to report to David concerning the men; and he sent to meet them, for they were greatly disgraced; and the king said, Dwell in Jerichō until your beards have grown, and return. |
6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent 1000 talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.
6 And the children of Ammōn saw that the people of David were ashamed, and Anan and the children of Ammōn sent 1000 talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen out of Syria of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria Moocha, and from Sobal. | 6 And the children of Ammōn saw that the people of David were ashamed, and Anan and the children of Ammōn sent 1000 talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen out of Syria of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria Moocha, and from Sōba. |
7 So they hired 32,000 chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and camped before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
7 And they hired for themselves 32,000 chariots, and the king of Mōcha and his people; and they came and encamped before Maidaba; and the children of Ammōn assembled out of their cities, and came to fight. | 7 And they hired for themselves 32,000 chariots, and the king of Moocha and his people; and they came and encamped before Maidaba; and the children of Ammōn assembled out of their cities, and came to fight. |
8 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men.
8 And David heard, and sent Jōab and all the army of mighty men. | 8 And David heard, and sent Jōab and all the army of mighty men. |
9 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city; and the kings who were come were by themselves in the field.
9 And the children of Ammōn came forth, and set themselves in array for battle by the gate of the city; and the kings who were come forth encamped by themselves in the plain. | 9 And the children of Ammōn came forth, and set themselves in array for battle by the gate of the city; and the kings who were come forth encamped by themselves in the plain. |
Ammon and Aram Defeated
10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israēl, and put them in array against the Syrians.
10 And Joab saw that they were confronting him to fight against him before and behind, and he chose some out of all the young men of Israēl, and they set themselves in array against the Syrian. | 10 And Joab saw that they were confronting him to fight against him before and behind, and he chose some out of all the young men of Israēl, and they set themselves in array against the Syrian. |
11 And the rest of the people he delivered to the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
11 And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of his brother Abesai, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammōn. | 11 And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of his brother Abesai, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammōn. |
12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for you, then I will help you.
12 And he said, If the Syrian should prevail against me, then you shall deliver me; and if the children of Ammōn should prevail against you, then will I deliver you. | 12 And he said, If the Syrian should prevail against me, then you shall deliver me; and if the children of Ammōn should prevail against you, then will I deliver you. |
13 Be of good courage, and let’s behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God; and let Yahweh do what is good in his sight.
13 Be of good courage, and let’s be strong, for our people, and for the cities of our God; and the Lord shall do what is good in his eyes. | 13 Be of good courage, and let’s be strong, for our people, and for the cities of our God; and the Lord shall do what is good in his eyes. |
14 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near before the Syrians to the battle; and they fled before him.
14 So Jōab and the people who were with him set themselves in battle array against the Syrians, and they fled from them. | 14 So Jōab and the people who were with him set themselves in battle array against the Syrians, and they fled from them. |
15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

15 And the children of Ammōn saw that the Syrians fled, and they also fled from before Abesai, and from before Jōab his brother, and they came to the city; and Jōab came to Jerousalēm. | 15 And the children of Ammōn saw that the Syrians fled, and they also fled from before Abesai, and from before Jōab his brother, and they came to the city; and Jōab came to Jerousalēm. |
16 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israēl, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians who were beyond the river; and Shophach the captain of the army of Hadarezer went before them.
16 And the Syrian saw that Israēl had defeated him, and he sent messengers, and they brought out the Syrians from beyond the river; and Sōphach the commander-in-chief of the forces of Adraazar was before them. | 16 And the Syrian saw that Israēl had defeated him, and he sent messengers, and they brought out the Syrians from beyond the river; and Sōpha the commander-in-chief of the forces of Adraazar was before them. |
17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israēl, and passed over Jordan, and came on them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israēl, and crossed over Jordan, and came on them, and set the battle in array against them. So David set his army in array to fight against the Syrians, and they fought against him. | 17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israēl, and crossed over Jordan, and came on them, and set the battle in array against them. So David set his army in array to fight against the Syrians, and they fought against him. |
18 But the Syrians fled before Israēl; and David killed of the Syrians 7000 men who fought in chariots, and 40,000 footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the army.
18 And the Syrians fled from before Israēl; and David killed of the Syrians 7000 riders in chariots, and 40,000 infantry, and he killed Sōphach the commander-in-chief of the forces. | 18 And the Syrians fled from before Israēl; and David killed of the Syrians 7000 riders in chariots, and 40,000 infantry, and he killed Sōpha the commander-in-chief of the forces. |
19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israēl, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
