Saul Defeats the Ammonites

1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.

1 And it happened about a month later, that Naas the Ammanite went up and encamped against Jabis Galaad, and all the men of Jabis said to Naas the Ammanite, “Make a covenant with us, and we will be subject to you.” 1 And it happened about a month later, that Naas the Ammanite went up and encamped against Jabis Galaad, and all the men of Jabis said to Naas the Ammanite, “Make a covenant with us, and we will be subject to you.”

2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach on all Israēl.

2 And Naas the Ammanite said to them, “By this I will make a covenant with you, by gouging out of you every right eye, and I will put disgrace on Israēl.” 2 And Naas the Ammanite said to them, “By this I will make a covenant with you, by gouging out of you every right eye, and I will put disgrace on Israēl.”

3 And the elders of Jabesh said to him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers to all the coasts of Israēl; and then, if there is no man to save us, we will come out to you.

3 And the men of Jabis said to him, “Allow us seven days, and we will send messengers through all the territory of Israēl; if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.” 3 And the men of Jabis said to him, “Allow us seven days, and we will send messengers through all the territory of Israēl; if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.”

4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people; and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

4 And the messengers came to Gabaa to Saoul and spoke the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lifted up their voice and wept. 4 And the messengers came to Gabaa to Saoul and spoke the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lifted up their voice and wept.

5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What ails the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

5 καὶ ἰδοὺ Σαοὺλ ἤρχετο μετὰ τὸ πρωῒ ἐξ ἀγροῦ, καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ τί ὅτι κλαίει λαός;
5 καὶ ἰδοὺ Σαοὺλ ἤρχετο μετὰ τὸ πρωῒ ἐξ ἀγροῦ, καὶ εἶπε Σαούλ· τί ὅτι κλαίει λαός;
5 And Look! Saoul was coming from the field after the early morning, and Saoul said, “Why is it that the people are weeping?” And they told him the words of the sons of Jabis. 5 And Look! Saoul was coming from the field after the early morning, and Saoul said, “Why is it that the people are weeping?” And they told him the words of the sons of Jabis.

6 And the Spirit of God came on Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

6 And a spirit of the Lord leaped on Saoul when he heard these words, and his wrath against them was great anger. 6 And a spirit of the Lord leaped on Saoul when he heard these words, and his wrath against them was great anger.

7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israēl by the hands of messengers, saying, Whoever doesn’t come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen. And the fear of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

7 And he took two oxen and dismembered them and sent throughout all the territory of Israēl by the hand of messengers, saying, “He who doesn’t come out after Saoul and after Samouēl, according to this they shall do to his oxen!” And the dismay of the Lord fell on the people of Israēl, and they shouted out as one man.

8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the sons of Israēl were 300,000, and the men of Judah 30,000.

8 And he reviewed them at Abiezek in Bama, every man of Israēl, 600,000 and the men of Jouda, 70,000. 8 And he reviewed them at Abiezek in Bama, every man of Israēl, 600,000 and the men of Jouda, 70,000.

9 And they said to the messengers that came, Thus you shall say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, To next day, by that time the sun be hot, you shall have help. And the messengers came and showed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

9 And he said to the messengers who came, “This is what you shall say to the men of Jabis: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.’ ” And the messengers came to the city and told the men of Jabis, and they rejoiced. 9 And he said to the messengers who came, “This is what you shall say to the men of Jabis: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.’ ” And the messengers came to the city and told the men of Jabis, and they rejoiced.

10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.

10 And the men of Jabis said to Naas the Ammanite, “Tomorrow we will come forth to you, and you shall do to us what seems good before you.” 10 And the men of Jabis said to Naas the Ammanite, “Tomorrow we will come forth to you, and you shall do to us what seems good before you.”

11 And it was so on the next day, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the army in the morning watch, and killed the Ammonites until the heat of the day; and it happened, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

11 And it happened the next day that Saoul put the people in three companies. And they came into the middle of the camp at the morning watch and stricl the sons of Ammōn until the day had become hot, and there were those who survived; they were scattered, and no two among them remained together. 11 And it happened the next day that Saoul put the people in three companies. And they came into the middle of the camp at the morning watch and stricl the sons of Ammōn until the day had become hot, and there were those who survived; they were scattered, and no two among them remained together.

12 And the people said to Samuel, Who is he who said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

12 καὶ εἶπεν λαὸς πρὸς Σαμουὴλ τίς εἴπας ὅτι Σαοὺλ οὐ βασιλεύσει ἡμῶν;
12 καὶ εἶπε λαὸς πρὸς Σαμουήλ· τίς εἴπας ὅτι Σαοὺλ οὐ βασιλεύσει ἡμῶν;
12 And the people said to Samouēl, “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saoul reign over us?’ Hand the men over and we will put them to death.” 12 And the people said to Samouēl, “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saoul reign over us?’ Hand the men over and we will put them to death.”

13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today Yahweh has wrought salvation in Israēl.

13 And Saoul said, “No one shall die in this day, for today the Lord has worked deliverance in Israēl.” 13 And Saoul said, “No one shall die in this day, for today the Lord has worked deliverance in Israēl.”

14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let’s go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

14 And Samouēl said to the people, saying, “Let us go to Galgala and there renew the kingdom.” 14 And Samouēl said to the people, saying, “Let us go to Galgala and there renew the kingdom.”

15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israēl rejoiced greatly.

15 And all the people went to Galgala, and there Samouēl anointed Saoul king before the Lord in Galgala, and there he sacrificed meat offerings and peace offerings before the Lord, and Samouēl and all Israēl rejoiced exceedingly. 15 And all the people went to Galgala, and there Samouēl anointed Saoul king before the Lord in Galgala, and there he sacrificed meat offerings and peace offerings before the Lord, and Samouēl and all Israēl rejoiced exceedingly.
