Asa Wars against Baasha

1 In the 36th year of the reign of Asa Baasha king of Israēl came up against Judah, and built Ramah, to the intent that he might let none go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.

1 And in the 38th year of the reign of Asa, the king of Israēl went up against Jouda, and built Rama, so as not to allow egress or ingress to Asa king of Jouda. 1 And in the 38th year of the reign of Asa, the king of Israēl went up against Jouda, and built Rama, so as not to allow egress or ingress to Asa king of Jouda.

2 Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of Yahweh and of the king’s house, and sent to Ben-hadad king of Syria, who dwelt at Damascus, saying,

2 And Asa took silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the Lord, and of the king’s house, and sent them to the son of Ader king of Syria, which dwelt in Damascus, saying, 2 And Asa took silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the Lord, and of the king’s house, and sent them to the son of Ader king of Syria, which dwelt in Damascus, saying,

3 There is a league between me and you, as there was between my father and your father: behold, I have sent you silver and gold; go, break your league with Baasha king of Israēl, that he may depart from me.

3 Make a covenant between me and you, and between my father and your father: behold, I have sent you gold and silver: come, and turn away from me Baasa king of Israēl, and let him depart from me. 3 Make a covenant between me and you, and between my father and your father: behold, I have sent you gold and silver: come, and turn away from me Baasa king of Israēl, and let him depart from me.

4 And Ben-hadad listened to king Asa, and sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israēl; and they smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abel-maim, and all the store cities of Naphtali.

4 And the son of Ader listened to king Asa, and sent the captains of his army against the cities of Israēl; and smote Aion, and Dan, and Abelmain, and all the country round Nephthali. 4 And the son of Ader listened to king Asa, and sent the captains of his army against the cities of Israēl; and smote Aion, and Dan, and Abelmain, and all the country round Nephthali.

5 And it came to be, when Baasha heard it, that he left off building of Ramah, and let his work cease.

5 And it happened when Baasa heard it he left off building Rama, and put a stop to his work. 5 And it happened when Baasa heard it he left off building Rama, and put a stop to his work.

6 Then Asa the king took all Judah; and they carried away the stones of Ramah, and the timber of it, with which Baasha was building; and he built with it Geba and Mizpah.

Asa Imprisons the Prophet

7 And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him, Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on Yahweh your Elohim, therefore is the army of the king of Syria escaped out of your hand.

7 And at that time came Anani the prophet to Asa king of Jouda, and said to him, Because you did trust on the king of Syria, and didn’t trust on the Lord your God, therefore the army of Syria is escaped out of your hand. 7 And at that time came Anani the prophet to Asa king of Jouda, and said to him, Because you did trust on the king of Syria, and didn’t trust on the Lord your God, therefore the army of Syria is escaped out of your hand.

8 Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge army, with very many chariots and horsemen? yet, because you did rely on Yahweh, he delivered them into your hand.

8 οὐχ οἱ Αἰθίοπες καὶ Λίβυες ἦσαν εἰς δύναμιν πολλὴν εἰς θάρσος, εἰς ἱππεῖς εἰς πλῆθος σφόδρα;
8 οὐχ οἱ Αἰθίοπες καὶ Λίβυες ἦσαν εἰς δύναμιν πολλὴν εἰς θάρσος, εἰς ἱππεῖς εἰς πλῆθος σφόδρα;
καὶ ἐν τῷ πεποιθέναι σε ἐπὶ Κύριον παρέδωκεν εἰς χεῖράς σου;
8 Were not the Ethiopians and Libyans a great force, in courage, in horsemen, in great numbers? And didn’t He deliver them into your hands, because you trusted in the Lord? 8 Were not the Ethiopians and Libyans a great force, in courage, in horsemen, in great numbers? And didn’t He deliver them into your hands, because you trusted in the Lord?

9 For the eyes of Yahweh run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein you have done foolishly; therefore from henceforth you shall have wars.

9 For the eyes of the Lord look on all the earth, to strengthen every heart that is perfect toward him. In this you have done foolishly; henceforth there shall be war with you. 9 For the eyes of the Lord look on all the earth, to strengthen every heart that is perfect toward him. In this you have done foolishly; henceforth there shall be war with you.

10 Then Asa was wroth with the seer, and put him in a prison house; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people the same time.

10 And Asa was angry with the prophet, and put him in prison, for he was angry at this; and Asa vexed some of the people at that time. 10 And Asa was angry with the prophet, and put him in prison, for he was angry at this; and Asa vexed some of the people at that time.

11 And, behold, the acts of Asa, first and last, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israēl.

11 And, behold, the acts of Asa, the first and the last, are written in the book of the kings of Jouda and Israēl. 11 And, behold, the acts of Asa, the first and the last, are written in the book of the kings of Jouda and Israēl.

12 And Asa in the 30 and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he didn’t seek to Yahweh, but to the physicians.

12 And Asa was diseased in his feet in the 39th year of his reign, until he was very ill; but in his disease he didn’t seek to the Lord, but to the physicians. 12 And Asa was diseased in his feet in the 39th year of his reign, until he was very ill; but in his disease he didn’t seek to the Lord, but to the physicians.

13 And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the 41st year of his reign.

13 And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the 40th year of his reign. 13 And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the 40th year of his reign.

14 And they buried him in his own sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and various kinds of spices prepared by the apothecaries’ art; and they made a very great burning for him.

14 And they buried him in the sepulchre which he had dug for himself in the city of David, and they laid him on a bed, and filled it with spices and all kinds of perfumes of the apothecaries; and they made for him a very great funeral. 14 And they buried him in the sepulchre which he had dug for himself in the city of David, and they laid him on a bed, and filled it with spices and all kinds of perfumes of the apothecaries; and they made for him a very great funeral.
