The Passover Observed Again
1 Moreover Josiah kept a passover to Yahweh in Jerusalem; and they killed the Passover on the 14th day of the first month.

3 And he told the Levites that were able to act in all Israēl, that they should consecrate themselves to the Lord; and they put the holy ark in the house which Salōmōn the son of David king of Israēl built; and the king said, You must not carry anything on your shoulders: now then minister to the Lord your God, and to his people Israēl. |
4 And prepare yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israēl, and according to the writing of Solomon his son.
4 And prepare yourselves according to the houses of your families, and according to your daily courses, according to the writing of David king of Israēl, and the order by the hand of his son Salōmōn. | 4 And prepare yourselves according to the houses of your families, and according to your daily courses, according to the writing of David king of Israēl, and the order by the hand of his son Salōmōn. |
5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brothers the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites.
5 And stand you in the house according to the divisions of the houses of your families for your brothers the sons of the people; so also let there be for the Levites a division of the house of their family. | 5 And stand you in the house according to the divisions of the houses of your families for your brothers the sons of the people; so also let there be for the Levites a division of the house of their family. |
6 So kill the Passover, and consecrate yourselves, and prepare your brothers, that they may do according to the word of Yahweh by the hand of Moses.
6 And kill you the Passover, and prepare it for your brothers, to do according to the word of the Lord, by the hand of Moses. | 6 And kill you the Passover, and prepare it for your brothers, to do according to the word of the Lord, by the hand of Moses. |
7 And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the Passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of 30,000, and 3000 bullocks: these were of the king’s substance.
7 And Josias gave as an offering to the children of the people, sheep, and lambs, and kids of the young of the goats, all for the Passover, even for all that were found, in number amounting to 30,000, and 3000 calves, these were of the substance of the king. | 7 And Josias gave as an offering to the children of the people, sheep, and lambs, and kids of the young of the goats, all for the Passover, even for all that were found, in number amounting to 30,000, and 3000 calves, these were of the substance of the king. |
8 And his princes gave willingly to the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave to the priests for the Passover offerings 2000 and 600 small cattle, and 300 oxen.
8 And his princes gave an offering to the people, and to the priests, and to the Levites; and Chelcias and Zacharias and Jeiel the chief men gave to the priests of the house of God, they even gave for the Passover sheep, and lambs, and kids, 2600, and 300 calves. | 8 And his princes gave an offering to the people, and to the priests, and to the Levites; and Chelcias and Zacharias and Jeiel the chief men gave to the priests of the house of God, they even gave for the Passover sheep, and lambs, and kids, 2600, and 300 calves. |
9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brothers, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave to the Levites for passover offerings 5000 small cattle, and 500 oxen.
9 And Chonenias, and Banaias, and Samaeas, and Nathanael his brother, and Asabias, and Jeiel, and Jozabad, heads of the Levites, gave an offering to the Levites for the Passover, of 5000 sheep and 500 calves. | 9 And Chonenias, and Banaias, and Samaeas, and Nathanael his brother, and Asabias, and Jeiel, and Jozabad, heads of the Levites, gave an offering to the Levites for the Passover, of 5000 sheep and 500 calves. |
10 So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment.
10 And the service was duly ordered, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their divisions, according to the command of the king. | 10 And the service was duly ordered, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their divisions, according to the command of the king. |
11 And they killed the Passover, and the priests sprinkled the blood from their hands, and the Levites flayed them.
11 And they killed the Passover, and the priests sprinkled the blood from their hand, and the Levites flayed the victims. | 11 And they killed the Passover, and the priests sprinkled the blood from their hand, and the Levites flayed the victims. |
12 And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer to Yahweh, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so they did with the oxen.
12 And they prepared the whole-burnt-offering to give to them, according to the division by the houses of families, even to the sons of the people, to offer to the Lord, as it is written in the book of Moses. | 12 And they prepared the whole-burnt-offering to give to them, according to the division by the houses of families, even to the sons of the people, to offer to the Lord, as it is written in the book of Moses. |
13 And they roasted the Passover with fire according to the ordinance; but the other holy offerings sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and divided them speedily among all the people.
13 And thus they did till the morning. And they roasted the Passover with fire according to the ordinance; and boiled the holy pieces in copper vessels and caldrons, and the feast went on well, and they quickly served all the children of the people. | 13 And thus they did till the morning. And they roasted the Passover with fire according to the ordinance; and boiled the holy pieces in copper vessels and caldrons, and the feast went on well, and they quickly served all the children of the people. |
14 And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron.
14 And after they had prepared for themselves and for the priests, for the priests were engaged in offering the whole-burnt-offerings and the fat until night, then the Levites prepared for themselves, and for their brothers the sons of Aaron. | 14 And after they had prepared for themselves and for the priests, for the priests were engaged in offering the whole-burnt-offerings and the fat until night, then the Levites prepared for themselves, and for their brothers the sons of Aaron. |
15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer; and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brothers the Levites prepared for them.
15 And the sons of Asaph the psalm-singers were at their post according to the commands of David, and Asaph, and Aiman, and Idithom, the prophets of the king: also, the chiefs and the porters of the several gates; –it wasn’t for them to stir from the service of the holy things, for their brothers the Levites prepared for them. |
16 So all the service of Yahweh was prepared the same day, to keep the Passover, and to offer burnt offerings on the altar of Yahweh, according to the commandment of king Josiah.
16 So all the service of the Lord was duly ordered and prepared in that day, for keeping the Passover, and offering the whole-burnt-sacrifices on the altar of the Lord, according to the command of king Josias. | 16 So all the service of the Lord was duly ordered and prepared in that day, for keeping the Passover, and offering the whole-burnt-sacrifices on the altar of the Lord, according to the command of king Josias. |
17 And the sons of Israēl that were present kept the Passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days.
17 And the sons of Israēl that were present kept the Passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days. | 17 And the sons of Israēl that were present kept the Passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days. |
18 And there was no passover like to that kept in Israēl from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israēl keep such a passover as Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israēl that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
18 And there was no passover like it in Israēl from the days of Samuel the prophet, or any king of Israēl: they didn’t keep such a passover as Josias, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Jouda and Israēl that were present, and the dwellers in Jerusalem, kept to the Lord. |
19 In the 18th year of the reign of Josiah was this passover kept.

Josiah Dies in Battle
20 After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates; and Josiah went out against him.
20 And Pharaō Nechao king of Egypt went up against the king of the Assyrians to the river Euphrates, and king Josias went to meet him. | 20 And Pharaō Nechao king of Egypt went up against the king of the Assyrians to the river Euphrates, and king Josias went to meet him. |
21 But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with you, you king of Judah? I don’t come against you this day, but against the house with which I have war; for God commanded me to make haste: forbear you from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy you not.

21 And he sent messengers to him, saying, What have I to do with you, Oh king of Jouda? I am not come today to war against you; and God has told me to hurry: beware of the God that is with me, lest he destroy you. | 21 And he sent messengers to him, saying, What have I to do with you, Oh king of Jouda? 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and didn’t listen to the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.
22 However, Josias didn’t turn his face from him, but strengthened himself to fight against him, and didn’t listen to the words of Nechao by the mouth of God, and he came to fight in the plain of Mageddo. | 22 However, Josias didn’t turn his face from him, but strengthened himself to fight against him, and didn’t listen to the words of Nechao by the mouth of God, and he came to fight in the plain of Mageddo. |
23 And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded.

24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
