Ammon and Aram Defeated

1 And it came to be after this, that the king of the children of Ammōn died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

1 And it happened after these things that the king of the sons of Ammōn died, and his son Annōn reigned in his stead. 1 And it happened after these things that the king of the sons of Ammōn died, and his son Annōn reigned in his stead.

2 Then said David, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammōn.

2 And David said, “I will show mercy to Annōn son of Naas, just as his father showed mercy to me,” and David sent by the hand of his subjects to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the sons of Ammōn, 2 And David said, “I will show mercy to Annōn son of Naas, just as his father showed mercy to me,” and David sent by the hand of his subjects to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the sons of Ammōn,

3 And the princes of the children of Ammōn said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think David honours your father that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David rather sent his servants to you, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”

3 καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἄρχοντες υἱῶν Ἀμμὼν πρὸς Ἀννὼν τὸν κύριον αὐτῶν μὴ παρὰ τὸ δοξάζειν Δαυὶδ τὸν πατέρα σου ἐνώπιόν σου, ὅτι ἀπέστειλέν σοί παρακαλοῦντας;
ἀλλ’ οὐχὶ ὅπως ἐρευνήσωσιν τὴν πόλιν καὶ κατασκοπήσωσιν αὐτὴν καὶ τοῦ κατασκέψασθαι αὐτὴν ἀπέστειλεν Δαυὶδ τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ πρὸς σέ;
3 καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἄρχοντες υἱῶν Ἀμμὼν πρὸς Ἀννὼν τὸν κύριον αὐτῶν· μὴ παρὰ τὸ δοξάζειν Δαυὶδ τὸν πατέρα σου ἐνώπιόν σου, ὅτι ἀπέστειλέ σοι παρακαλοῦντας;
ἀλλ’ οὐχὶ ὅπως ἐρευνήσωσι τὴν πόλιν καὶ κατασκοπήσωσιν αὐτὴν καὶ τοῦ κατασκέψασθαι αὐτὴν ἀπέστειλε Δαυὶδ τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ πρός σε;
3 and the rulers of the sons of Ammōn said to their master Annōn, “Was it not from David’s glorifying your father before you, that he sent comforters to you? But has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to survey it?” 3 and the rulers of the sons of Ammōn said to their master Annōn, “Was it not from David’s glorifying your father before you, that he sent comforters to you? But has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to survey it?”

4 Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

4 And Annōn took David’s servants and shaved their beards and cut their woolen cloaks in half up to their hips and sent them away. 4 And Annōn took David’s servants and shaved their beards and cut their woolen cloaks in half up to their hips and sent them away.

5 When they told it to David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed; and the king said, “Wait in Jericho until your beards are grown, and then return.”

5 And they told David about the men, and he sent for a meeting with them, because the men were very insulted, and the king said, “Settle at Jerichō until your beards grow, and you shall return.” 5 And they told David about the men, and he sent for a meeting with them, because the men were very insulted, and the king said, “Settle at Jerichō until your beards grow, and you shall return.”

6 And when the children of Ammōn saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammōn sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, 20,000 footmen, and of king Maacah 1000 men, and of Ish-tob 12,000 men.

6 And the sons of Ammōn saw that the people of David were put to shame, and the sons of Ammōn sent and hired Syria of Baithroōb, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacha, 1000 men, and Istōb, 12,000 men. 6 And the children of Ammōn saw that the people of David were ashamed; and the children of Ammōn sent, and hired the Syrians of Baethraam, and the Syrians of Suba, and Roob, 20,000 footmen, and the king of Amalec with 1000 men, and Istob with 12,000 men.

7 And when David heard of it, he sent Jōab, and all the army of the mighty men.

7 And David heard and sent Jōab and all the army, the mighty ones. 7 And David heard and sent Jōab and all the army, the mighty ones.

8 And the children of Ammōn came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate; and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

8 And the sons of Ammōn came out and prepared for battle near the door of the gate, and Syria of Souba and Rhoōb and Istōb and Maacha were by themselves in open country. 8 And the sons of Ammōn came out and prepared for battle near the door of the gate, and Syria of Souba and Rhoōb and Istōb and Maacha were by themselves in open country.

9 When Jōab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israēl, and put them in array against the Syrians;

9 And Jōab saw that there was a front of the battle against him both in front and in the rear, and he chose from the young men of Israēl and arrayed them opposite Syria. 9 And Jōab saw that there was a front of the battle against him both in front and in the rear, and he chose from the young men of Israēl and arrayed them opposite Syria.

10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammōn.

10 And the rest of the people he gave in the hand of his brother Abessa, and he arrayed them opposite the sons of Ammōn. 10 And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of Abessa his brother, and they set the battle in array opposite to the children of Ammōn.

11 And he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammōn are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.

11 And he said, “If Syria is too strong for me, then you shall be my salvation, and if the sons of Ammōn are too strong for you, then we will be your salvation; 11 And he said, “If Syria is too strong for me, then you shall be my salvation, and if the sons of Ammōn are too strong for you, then we will be your salvation;

12 Be of good courage, and let’s play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God; and Yahweh do what seems him good.”

12 be manly, and let us be strong for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God, and the Lord will do what is good in his eyes.” 12 be manly, and let us be strong for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God, and the Lord will do what is good in his eyes.”

13 And Jōab drew near, and the people who were with him, to the battle against the Syrians; and they fled before him.

13 And Jōab and his people with him moved forward into battle against Syria, and they fled from before him. 13 And Jōab and his people with him moved forward into battle against Syria, and they fled from before him.

14 And when the children of Ammōn saw that the Syrians had fled, then they also fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Jōab returned from the children of Ammōn, and came to Jerusalem.

14 And the sons of Ammōn saw that Syria fled, and they fled from before Abessa and entered into the city. And Jōab returned from the sons of Ammōn and came to Jerousalēm. 14 And the sons of Ammōn saw that Syria fled, and they fled from before Abessa and entered into the city. And Jōab returned from the sons of Ammōn and came to Jerousalēm.

15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israēl, they gathered themselves together.

15 And Syria saw that they fell before Israēl, and they gathered themselves together. 15 And Syria saw that they fell before Israēl, and they gathered themselves together.

16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river; and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the army of Hadarezer went before them.

16 And Adraazar sent and gathered Syria who was from beyond the river Chalamak, and they came, Ailam and Sōbak, the ruler of the army of Adraazar, in front of them. 16 And Adraazar sent and gathered Syria who was from beyond the river Chalamak, and they came, Ailam and Sōbak, the ruler of the army of Adraazar, in front of them.

17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israēl together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

17 And it was told David, and he gathered all Israēl together and crossed the Jordan and came to Ailam, and Syria deployed troops against David and fought with him. 17 And it was told David, and he gathered all Israēl together and crossed the Jordan and came to Ailam, and Syria deployed troops against David and fought with him.

18 And the Syrians fled before Israēl; and David killed the men of 700 chariots of the Syrians, and 40,000 horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their army, who died there.

18 And Syria fled from before Israēl, and David destroyed of Syria 700 chariots and 40,000 horsemen and struck Sōbak the commander of their force, and he died there. 18 And Syria fled from before Israēl, and David destroyed of Syria 700 chariots and 40,000 horsemen and struck Sōbak the commander of their force, and he died there.

19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israēl, they made peace with Israēl, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammōn any more.

19 And all the kings who were subjects of Adraazar saw that they fell before Israēl, and they deserted to Israēl and became subject to them. And Syria was afraid to save the sons of Ammōn again. 19 And all the kings who were subjects of Adraazar saw that they fell before Israēl, and they deserted to Israēl and became subject to them. And Syria was afraid to save the sons of Ammōn again.
