1 Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying,
1 And Saphanias the son of Nathan, and Godolias the son of Paschor, and Joachal the son of Semelias, heard the words which Jeremias spoke to the people, saying, | 1 And Saphanias the son of Nathan, and Godolias the son of Paschor, and Joachal the son of Semelias, heard the words which Jeremias spoke to the people, saying, |
2 Thus says Yahweh, He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he who goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
2 Thus says the Lord; He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine; but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live; and his soul shall be given him for a found treasure, and he shall live. | 2 Thus says the Lord; He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine; but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live; and his soul shall be given him for a found treasure, and he shall live. |
3 Thus says Yahweh, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.
3 For thus says the Lord; This city shall certainly be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, and they shall take it. | 3 For thus says the Lord; This city shall certainly be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, and they shall take it. |
4 Therefore the princes said to the king, We beseech you, let this man be put to death; for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them; for this man seeks not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.
4 And they said to the king, Let that man, please, be slain, for he weakens the hands of the fighting men who are left in the city, and the hands of all the people, speaking to them according to these words; for this man doesn’t prophesy peace to this people, but evil. | 4 And they said to the king, Let that man, please, be slain, for he weakens the hands of the fighting men who are left in the city, and the hands of all the people, speaking to them according to these words; for this man doesn’t prophesy peace to this people, but evil. |
5 Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he who can do anything against you.
5 Then the king said, Behold, he is in your hands. For the king couldn’t resist them. | 5 Then the king said, Behold, he is in your hands. For the king couldn’t resist them. |
6 Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison; and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.
6 And they cast him into the dungeon of Melchias the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison; and they let him down into the pit; and there was no water in the pit, but mire; and he was in the mire. | 6 And they cast him into the dungeon of Melchias the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison; and they let him down into the pit; and there was no water in the pit, but mire; and he was in the mire. |
7 Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;
7 And Abdemelech the Ethiopian heard, (now he was in the king’s household,) that they had put Jeremias into the dungeon; and the king was in the gate of Benjamin. | 7 And Abdemelech the Ethiopian heard, (now he was in the king’s household,) that they had put Jeremias into the dungeon; and the king was in the gate of Benjamin. |
8 Ebed-melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spoke to the king, saying,
8 and he went forth to him, and spoke to the king and said, | 8 and he went forth to him, and spoke to the king and said, |
9 My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is; for there is no more bread in the city.
9 You have done evil in what you have done to slay this man with hunger; for there is no more bread in the city. | 9 You have done evil in what you have done to slay this man with hunger; for there is no more bread in the city. |
10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence 30 men with you, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.
10 And the king commanded Abdemelech, saying, Take with you hence thirty men, and bring him up out of the dungeon, that he die not. | 10 And the king commanded Abdemelech, saying, Take with you hence thirty men, and bring him up out of the dungeon, that he die not. |
11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took from there old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.
11 So Abdemelech took the men and went into the underground part of the king’s house, and took from there old rags and old ropes, and threw them to Jeremias into the dungeon. | 11 So Abdemelech took the men and went into the underground part of the king’s house, and took from there old rags and old ropes, and threw them to Jeremias into the dungeon. |
12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under your armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.
12 And he said, Put these under the ropes. And Jeremias did so. | 12 And he said, Put these under the ropes. And Jeremias did so. |
13 So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
13 And they drew him with the ropes, and lifted him out of the dungeon; and Jeremias remained in the court of the prison. | 13 And they drew him with the ropes, and lifted him out of the dungeon; and Jeremias remained in the court of the prison. |
14 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of Yahweh; and the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you a thing; don’t hide anything from me.
14 Then the king sent, and called him to himself into the house of Aselisel, which was in the house of the Lord; and the king said to him, I will ask you a question, and please don’t hide anything from me. | 14 Then the king sent, and called him to himself into the house of Aselisel, which was in the house of the Lord; and the king said to him, I will ask you a question, and please don’t hide anything from me. |
15 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, will you not listen to me?

καὶ
τῷ
ἐὰν
σοι,
με

15 And Jeremias said to the king, If I tell you, will you not certainly put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you won’t at all listen to me. | 15 And Jeremias said to the king, If I tell you, will you not certainly put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you won’t at all listen to me. |
16 So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, As Yahweh lives, that made us this soul, I won’t put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.
16 And the king swore to him, saying, As the Lord lives who gave us this soul, I won’t slay you, neither will I give you into the hands of these men. | 16 And the king swore to him, saying, As the Lord lives who gave us this soul, I won’t slay you, neither will I give you into the hands of these men. |
17 Then said Jeremiah to Zedekiah, Thus says Yahweh, the God of armies, Elohim of Israēl; If you will assuredly go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your house.
17 And Jeremias said to him, Thus says the Lord; If you will indeed go forth to the captains of the king of Babylon, your soul shall live, and this city shall certainly not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your house. | 17 And Jeremias said to him, Thus says the Lord; If you will indeed go forth to the captains of the king of Babylon, your soul shall live, and this city shall certainly not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your house. |
18 But if you won’t go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape out of their hand.
18 But if you won’t go forth this city shall be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall by no means escape. | 18 But if you won’t go forth this city shall be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall by no means escape. |
19 And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.
19 And the king said to Jeremias, I consider the Joudeans that have gone over to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hands, and they mock me. | 19 And the king said to Jeremias, I consider the Joudeans that have gone over to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hands, and they mock me. |
20 But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver you. Obey, I beseech you, the voice of Yahweh, which I speak to you; so it shall be well to you, and your soul shall live.
20 And Jeremias said, They shall in no wise deliver you up. Hear the word of the Lord which I speak to you; and it shall be better for you, and your soul shall live. | 20 And Jeremias said, They shall in no wise deliver you up. Hear the word of the Lord which I speak to you; and it shall be better for you, and your soul shall live. |
21 But if you refuse to go forth, this is the word that Yahweh has shown me.
21 But if you won’t go forth, this is the word which the Lord has shown me. | 21 But if you won’t go forth, this is the word which the Lord has shown me. |
22 And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Your friends have set you on, and have prevailed against you: your feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.
22 And, behold, all the women that are left in the house of the king of Juda were brought forth to the princes of the king of Babylon; and they said, The men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and will prevail against you; and they shall cause your foot to slide and fail, they have turned back from you. | 22 And, behold, all the women that are left in the house of the king of Juda were brought forth to the princes of the king of Babylon; and they said, The men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and will prevail against you; and they shall cause your foot to slide and fail, they have turned back from you. |
23 So they shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon; and you shall cause this city to be burned with fire.
23 And they shall bring forth your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you shall by no means escape, for you shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned. | 23 And they shall bring forth your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you shall by no means escape, for you shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned. |
24 Then said Zedekiah to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and you shall not die.
24 Then the king said to him, Let no man know any of these words, and certainly you shall not die. | 24 Then the king said to him, Let no man know any of these words, and certainly you shall not die. |
25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and say to you, Declare to us now what you have said to the king, hide it not from us, and we won’t put you to death; also what the king said to you.
25 And if the princes shall hear that I have spoken to you, and they come to you, and say to you, Tell us, what said the king to you? Hide it not from us, and we will in no wise slay you, and what said the king to you? | 25 And if the princes shall hear that I have spoken to you, and they come to you, and say to you, Tell us, what said the king to you? Hide it not from us, and we will in no wise slay you, and what said the king to you? |
26 Then you shall say to them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.
26 Then you shall say to them, I brought my supplication before the presence of the king, that he would not send me back into the house of Jonathan, that I should die there. | 26 Then you shall say to them, I brought my supplication before the presence of the king, that he would not send me back into the house of Jonathan, that I should die there. |
27 Then came all the princes to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter wasn’t perceived.
27 And all the princes came to Jeremias, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words, which the king had commanded him. And they were silent, because the word of the Lord wasn’t heard. | 27 And all the princes came to Jeremias, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words, which the king had commanded him. And they were silent, because the word of the Lord wasn’t heard. |
28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken; and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
28 And Jeremias remained in the court of the prison, until the time when Jerusalem was taken. | 28 And Jeremias remained in the court of the prison, until the time when Jerusalem was taken. |
