Chapter 40

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive to Babylon.

1 The word that came from the Lord to Jeremias, after that Nabuzardan the captain of the guard had let him go out of Rama, when he had taken him in manacles in the midst of the captivity of Juda, even those who were carried to Babylon. 1 The word that came from the Lord to Jeremias, after that Nabuzardan the captain of the guard had let him go out of Rama, when he had taken him in manacles in the midst of the captivity of Juda, even those who were carried to Babylon.

2 And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said to him, Yahweh your Elohim has pronounced this evil on this place.

2 And the chief captain of the guard took him, and said to him, The Lord your God has pronounced all these evils on this place. 2 And the chief captain of the guard took him, and said to him, The Lord your God has pronounced all these evils on this place.

3 Now Yahweh has brought it, and done according as he has said, because you have sinned against Yahweh, and haven’t obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come on you.

3 and the Lord has done it; because you sinned against him, and didn’t listen to his voice. 3 and the Lord has done it; because you sinned against him, and didn’t listen to his voice.

4 And now, behold, I loose you this day from the chains which were on your hand. If it seem good to you to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well to you; but if it seem ill to you to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before you: to which it seems good and convenient for you to go, to that place go.

4 Behold, I have loosed you from the manacles that were on your hands. If it seem good to you to go with me to Babylon, then will I set my eyes on you. 4 Behold, I have loosed you from the manacles that were on your hands. If it seem good to you to go with me to Babylon, then will I set my eyes on you.

5 Now while he wasn’t yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wherever it seems convenient to you to go. So the captain of the guard gave him food and a reward, and let him go.

5 But if not, depart; return to Godolias the son of Achicam, the son of Saphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed governor in the land of Juda, and dwell with him in the midst of the people in the land of Juda: to whatever places it seems good in your eyes to go, do you even go. And the captain of the guard made him presents, and let him go.

6 Then went Jeremiah to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people who were left in the land.

6 And he came to Godolias to Massēpha, and dwelt in the midst of his people that was left in the land. 6 And he came to Godolias to Massēpha, and dwelt in the midst of his people that was left in the land.

7 Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed to him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of those who were not carried away captive to Babylon;

7 And all the leaders of the army that was in the country, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Godolias governor in the land, and they committed to him the men and their wives, whom Nabuchodonosor had not removed to Babylon. 7 And all the leaders of the army that was in the country, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Godolias governor in the land, and they committed to him the men and their wives, whom Nabuchodonosor had not removed to Babylon.

8 Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netōphathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.

8 And there came to Godolias to Massēpha Ismaēl the son of Nathanias, and Jōanan son of Karēe, and Saraias the son of Thanaemeth, and the sons of Ōphe the Netōphathite, and Jezonias son of the Mochathite, they and their men. 8 And there came to Godolias to Massēpha Ismaēl the son of Nathanias, and Jōanan son of Karēe, and Saraias the son of Thanaemeth, and the sons of Jōphe the Netōphathite, and Ezonias son of the Mōchathite, they and their men.

9 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

9 And Godolias swore to them and to their men, saying, Don’t be afraid before the children of the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be better for you. 9 And Godolias swore to them and to their men, saying, Don’t be afraid before the children of the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be better for you.

10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come to us; but you, gather wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.

10 And, behold, I dwell in your presence at Massēpha, to stand before the Chaldeans who shall come against you; and do you gather grapes, and fruits, and oil, and put them into your vessels, and dwell in the cities which you have obtained possession of. 10 And, behold, I dwell in your presence at Massēpha, to stand before the Chaldeans who shall come against you; and do you gather grapes, and fruits, and oil, and put them into your vessels, and dwell in the cities which you have obtained possession of.

11 Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan;

11 And all the Joudeans that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and those who were in Idumea, and those who were in all the rest of the country, heard that the king of Babylon had granted a remnant to Juda, and that he had appointed over them Godolias the son of Achicam. 11 And all the Joudeans that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and those who were in Idumea, and those who were in all the rest of the country, heard that the king of Babylon had granted a remnant to Juda, and that he had appointed over them Godolias the son of Achicam.

12 Even all the Jews returned out of all places to which they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

12 And they came to Godolias into the land of Juda, to Massēpha, and gathered grapes, and very much summer fruit, and oil. 12 And they came to Godolias into the land of Juda, to Massēpha, and gathered grapes, and very much summer fruit, and oil.

13 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,

13 And Jōanan the son of Karēe, and all the leaders of the army, who were in the fields, came to Godolias to Massēpha, 13 And Jōanan the son of Karēe, and all the leaders of the army, who were in the fields, came to Godolias to Massēpha,

14 And said to him, Do you certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay you? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.

14 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ εἰ γνώσει γινώσκεις ὅτι Βελισὰ βασιλεὺς υἱῶν Ἀμμὼν ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς σὲ τὸν Ἰσμαὴλ πατάξαι σου ψυχήν;
14 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· εἰ γνώσει γινώσκεις ὅτι Βελεισσὰ βασιλεὺς υἱὸς υἱῶν Ἀμμὼν ἀπέστειλε πρὸς σὲ τὸν Ἰσμαὴλ πατάξαι σου ψυχήν;
14 and said to him, Do you indeed know that king Beleissa son of Ammon has sent Ismaēl to you to slay you? But Godolias believed them not. 14 and said to him, Do you indeed know that king Beleissa son of Ammon has sent Ismaēl to you to slay you? But Godolias believed them not.

15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, please, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it; therefore should he slay you, that all the Jews which are gathered to you should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish?

15 And Jōanan said to Godolias secretly in Massēpha, I will go now and smite Ismaēl, and let no man know it; lest he slay you, and all the Joudeans that are gathered to you be dispersed, and the remnant of Juda perish. 15 And Jōanan said to Godolias secretly in Massēpha, I will go now and smite Ismaēl, and let no man know it; lest he slay you, and all the Joudeans that are gathered to you be dispersed, and the remnant of Juda perish.

16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, You shall not do this thing; for you speak falsely of Ishmael.

16 But Godolias said to Jōanan, Do not the thing, for you speak lies concerning Ismaēl. 16 But Godolias said to Jōanan, Do not the thing, for you speak lies concerning Ismaēl.
