Chapter 23

AlexandrinusVaticanus

The Fall of Tyre

1 The burden of Tyre. Howl, you ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them.

1 The vision of Tyre. Howl, Oh ships of Carthage, because she has perished, and no one any longer comes from the land of the Kitieans. she has been led captive. 1 The vision of Tyre. Howl, Oh ships of Carthage, because she has perished, and no one any longer comes from the land of the Kitieans. she has been led captive.

2 Be still, you inhabitants of the isle; you whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished.

2 To whom have those who dwell in the island become similar, the merchants of Phoenicia, crossing the sea 2 To whom have those who dwell in the island become similar, the merchants of Phoenicia, crossing the sea

3 And by great waters the seed of Sihor, the harvest of the river, is her revenue; and she is a mart of nations.

3 ἐν ὕδατι πολλῷ, σπέρμα μεταβόλων;
3 ἐν ὕδατι πολλῷ, σπέρμα μεταβόλων;
3 on much water, an offspring of merchants? The merchants of the nations are as when a harvest is being gathered in. 3 on much water, an offspring of merchants? The merchants of the nations are as when a harvest is being gathered in.

4 Be ashamed, Oh Zidon; for the sea has spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I don’t travail, nor bring forth children, neither do I nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.

4 “Be ashamed, Oh Sidōn,” said the sea, and the strength of the sea said. “I have not been in labour nor given birth nor reared young men nor raised up virgins.” 4 “Be ashamed, Oh Sidōn,” said the sea, and the strength of the sea said. “I have not been in labour nor given birth nor reared young men nor raised up virgins.”

5 As at the report concerning Egypt, so shall they be sorely pained at the report of Tyre.

5 But when it becomes heard in Aigypt, anguish concerning Tyre will take hold of them. 5 But when it becomes heard in Aigypt, anguish concerning Tyre will take hold of them.

6 Pass over to Tarshish; howl, you inhabitants of the isle.

6 Go away to Carthage; howl, Oh you who dwell in this island! 6 Go away to Carthage; howl, Oh you who dwell in this island!

7 Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? Her own feet shall carry her afar off to stay.

7 οὐχ αὕτη ἦν ὑμῶν ὕβρις ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πρὶν παραδοθῆναι αὐτήν; 7 οὐχ αὕτη ἦν ὑμῶν ὕβρις ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πρὶν παραδοθῆναι αὐτήν;
7 Wasn’t this your pride from the beginning, before she was handed over? 7 Wasn’t this your pride from the beginning, before she was handed over?

8 Who has taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?

8 τίς ταῦτα ἐβούλευσεν ἐπὶ Τύρον;
μὴ ἥσσων ἐστὶν οὐκ ἰσχύει;
8 τίς ταῦτα ἐβούλευσεν ἐπὶ Τύρον;
μὴ ἥσσων ἐστὶν οὐκ ἰσχύει;
8 Who has planned these things against Tyre?
Is she inferior?
Or isn’t she strong?
Her traders are glorious, leaders of the earth.

9 Yahweh of armies has purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.

9 The Lord Sabaōth has planned to disable all the pride of the glorious ones and to dishonour every glorious thing on the earth. 9 The Lord Sabaōth has planned to disable all the pride of the glorious ones and to dishonour every glorious thing on the earth.

10 Pass through your land as a river, Oh daughter of Tarshish: there is no more strength.

10 Work your land, for now ships no longer are coming from Carthage. 10 Work your land, for now ships no longer are coming from Carthage.

11 He stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook the kingdoms: Yahweh has given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds of it.

11 But your hand, which irritated kings, is no longer strong by sea; the Lord Sabaōth commanded concerning Chanaan to destroy her strength. 11 But your hand, which irritated kings, is no longer strong by sea; the Lord Sabaōth commanded concerning Chanaan to destroy her strength.

12 And he said, You shall no more rejoice, Oh you oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to Chittim; there also you shall have no rest.

12 And they will say. You will no longer continue to insult and wrong the daughter of Sidōn; even if you go away to the Kitieans, not even there will you have rest. 12 And they will say. You will no longer continue to insult and wrong the daughter of Sidōn; even if you go away to the Kitieans, not even there will you have rest.

13 Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this people was not, till the Assyrian founded it for those who dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers of it, they raised up the palaces of it; and he brought it to ruin.

13 And if you go to the land of the Chaldeans, this too has been made desolate by the Assyrians, nor is there rest for you there because her wall has fallen. 13 And if you go to the land of the Chaldeans, this too has been made desolate by the Assyrians, nor is there rest for you there because her wall has fallen.

14 Howl, you ships of Tarshish; for your strength is laid waste.

14 Howl! Oh ships of Carthage, because your fortress has perished. 14 Howl! Oh ships of Carthage, because your fortress has perished.

15 And it will happen in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten 70 years, according to the days of one king: after the end of 70 years shall Tyre sing as a prostitute.

15 And it shall be on that day that Tyre will be abandoned for 70 years, like the time of a king, like the time of a man. And it shall be that after 70 years, Tyre will be like a prostitute’s song. 15 And it shall be on that day that Tyre will be abandoned for 70 years, like the time of a king, like the time of a man. And it shall be that after 70 years, Tyre will be like a prostitute’s song.

16 Take a harp, go about the city, you prostitute that have been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that you may be remembered.

16 Take a kithara, roam your cities, forgotten prostitute, play the kithara well, sing much, in order that you may be remembered. 16 Take a kithara, roam your cities, forgotten prostitute, play the kithara well, sing much, in order that you may be remembered.

17 And it will happen after the end of 70 years, that Yahweh will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth.

17 And it shall be that after 70 years God will make a visit to Tyre, and she will be restored again to her ancient condition and will be a market center for all the kingdoms of the inhabited world. 17 And it shall be that after 70 years God will make a visit to Tyre, and she will be restored again to her ancient condition and will be a market center for all the kingdoms of the inhabited world.

18 And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to Yahweh: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for those who dwell before Yahweh, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.

18 And her merchandise and her wages will be dedicated to the Lord; it won’t be gathered for them, but all her merchandise will be for those who live in the presence of the Lord, to eat and drink and be filled, as a covenant, a memorial in the presence of the Lord. 18 And her merchandise and her wages will be dedicated to the Lord; it won’t be gathered for them, but all her merchandise will be for those who live in the presence of the Lord, to eat and drink and be filled, as a covenant, a memorial in the presence of the Lord.
