Chapter 22

The Valley of Vision

1 The burden of the valley of vision. What ails you now, that you are entirely gone up to the housetops?

1 τὸ ῥῆμα τῆς φάραγγος Σιών.–Τί ἐγένετό σοι νῦν, ὅτι ἀνέβητε πάντες εἰς δώματα μάταια;
1 The word concerning the valley of Siōn. What has happened to you now that you have all gone up to housetops 1 The word concerning the valley of Siōn. What has happened to you now that you have all gone up to useless housetops?

2 You who are full of stirs, a tumultuous city, a joyous city: your slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.

2 μάταια;
2 useless?
The city was filled with shouting. Your wounded were not wounded by dagger, nor were your dead men dead in battle.
2 The city was filled with shouting. Your wounded were not wounded by dagger, nor were your dead men dead in battle.

3 All your rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers: all that are found in you are bound together, which have fled from far.

3 All your leaders have fled, and those who were caught have been harshly bound, and those who are strong in you have fled far away 3 All your leaders have fled, and those who were caught have been harshly bound, and those who are strong in you have fled far away

4 Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will weep bitterly, labour not to comfort me, because of the spoiling of the daughter of my people.

4 Therefore I said. Leave me alone; I will weep bitterly; don’t prevail in comforting me for the destruction of the daughter of my race. 4 Therefore I said. Leave me alone; I will weep bitterly; don’t prevail in comforting me for the destruction of the daughter of my race.

5 For it is a day of trouble, and of treading down, and of perplexity by Adonai Yahweh of armies in the valley of vision, breaking down the walls, and of crying to the mountains.

5 Because it is a day of trouble and destruction and trampling and there is wandering from the Lord Sabaōth in the valley of Siōn, from small to great they wander; they wander on the mountains. 5 Because it is a day of trouble and destruction and trampling and there is wandering from the Lord Sabaōth in the valley of Siōn, from small to great they wander; they wander on the mountains.

6 And Elam carried the quiver with chariots of men and horsemen, and Kir uncovered the shield.

6 Now the Ailamites took quivers, riding men on horses and an assembly for battle. 6 Now the Ailamites took quivers, riding men on horses and an assembly for battle.

7 And it will happen, that your choicest valleys shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.

7 And your prime valleys will be filled with chariots, and the cavalry will block your gates. 7 And your prime valleys will be filled with chariots, and the cavalry will block your gates.

8 And he discovered the covering of Judah, and you did look in that day to the armour of the house of the forest.

8 And they will uncover the gates of Jouda and on that day, they will look into the prime houses of the city, 8 And they will uncover the gates of Jouda and on that day, they will look into the prime houses of the city,

9 You have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many; and you gathered together the waters of the lower pool.

9 and they will uncover the secrets of the houses of the citadel of David. And they saw that there were many and that they had turned the water of the old pool into the city. 9 and they will uncover the secrets of the houses of the citadel of David. And they saw that there were many and that they had turned the water of the old pool into the city.

10 And you have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have you broken down to fortify the wall.

10 and that they had demolished the houses of Jerousalēm to fortify the wall for the city. 10 and that they had demolished the houses of Jerousalēm to fortify the wall for the city.

11 You made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool; but you haven’t looked to the maker of it, neither had respect to him who fashioned it long ago.

11 And you made water for yourselves between the two walls, further inward than the old pool. But you didn’t look to him who made it from the beginning, nor did you see him who created it. 11 And you made water for yourselves between the two walls, further inward than the old pool. But you didn’t look to him who made it from the beginning, nor did you see him who created it.

12 And in that day did Adonai Yahweh of armies call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth.

12 And in that day, the Lord Sabaōth called for weeping and lamentation and shaving and girding with sackcloth, 12 And in that day, the Lord, Lord Sabaōth called for weeping and lamentation and shaving and girding with sackcloth,

13 And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let’s eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die.

13 but they made gladness and joy, slaughtering calves and sacrificing sheep in order to eat meat and drink wine, saying. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” 13 but they made gladness and joy, slaughtering calves and sacrificing sheep in order to eat meat and drink wine, saying. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

14 And it was revealed in my ears by Yahweh of armies, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till you die, says Adonai Yahweh of armies.

14 And these things are revealed in the ears of the Lord Sabaōth, because this sin won’t be forgiven you until you die. 14 And these things are revealed in the ears of the Lord Sabaōth, because this sin won’t be forgiven you until you die.

15 Thus says Adonai Yahweh of armies, Go, get to this treasurer, even to Shebna, which is over the house, and say,

15 This is what the Lord Sabaōth says. Go into the priestly chamber, to Somnas the treasurer, and say to him. 15 This is what the Lord Sabaōth says. Go into the priestly chamber, to Somnas the treasurer, and say to him.

16 What have you here? And whom have you here, that you have hewed you out a sepulchre here, as he who hews him out a sepulchre on high, and that engraves a habitation for himself in a rock?

16 τί σὺ ὧδε καὶ τί σοὶ ἐστιν ὧδε, ὅτι ἐλατόμησας σεαυτῷ ὧδε μνημεῖον καὶ ἐποίησας σεαυτῷ ἐν ὑψηλῷ μνημεῖον καὶ ἔγραψας σεαυτῷ ἐν πέτρᾳ σκηνήν; 16 τί σὺ ὧδε, καὶ τί σοὶ ἐστιν ὧδε, ὅτι ἐλατόμησας σεαυτῷ ὧδε μνημεῖον καὶ ἐποίησας σεαυτῷ ἐν ὑψηλῷ μνημεῖον καὶ ἔγραψας σεαυτῷ ἐν πέτρα σκηνήν;
16 Why are you here?
What do you have here, that you have cut out a tomb here for yourself and made for yourself a tomb on the height and hewn a lodging for yourself in a rock?
16 Why are you here?
What do you have here, that you have cut out a tomb here for yourself and made for yourself a tomb on the height and hewn a lodging for yourself in a rock?

17 Behold, Yahweh will carry you away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover you.

17 Look please! the Lord Sabaōth will throw out and wipe out a man, and he will take away your robe 17 Look please! the Lord Sabaōth will throw out and wipe out a man, and he will take away your robe and your glorious crown

18 He will surely violently turn and toss you like a ball into a large country: there you shall die, and there the chariots of your glory shall be the shame of your lord’s house.

18 and your glorious crown and throw you into a great and limitless country; there you shall die. And he will make your beautiful chariot a disgrace and the house of your leader into something trampled down,. 18 and throw you into a great and limitless country; there you shall die. And he will make your beautiful chariot a disgrace and the house of your leader into something trampled down,.

19 And I will drive you from your station, and from your state he shall pull you down.

19 and you will be removed from your office and from your position. 19 and you will be removed from your office and from your position.

20 And it will happen in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah.

20 And it shall be on that day that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Chelkias 20 And it shall be on that day that I will call my servant Eliakeim the son of Chelkias

21 And I will clothe him with your robe, and strengthen him with your girdle, and I will commit your government into his hand; and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.

21 and will clothe him with your robe and give him your crown, and I will give your power and office into his hands, and he shall be like a father to those who dwell in Jerousalēm and to those who dwell in Jouda. 21 and will clothe him with your robe and give him your crown, and I will give your power and office into his hands, and he shall be like a father to those who dwell in Jerousalēm and to those who dwell in Jouda.

22 And the key of the house of David will I lay on his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

22 And I will give him the glory of David, and he shall rule, and there shall be no one to contradict him. 22 And I will give him the glory of David, and he shall rule, and there shall be no one to contradict him. and I will give him the key of the house of David on his shoulder; and he shall open, and there shall be none to shut; and he shall shut, and there shall be none to open.

23 And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s house.

23 And I will establish him a leader in a secure place, and he will become a throne of glory to his father’s house. 23 And I will establish him a leader in a secure place, and he will become a throne of glory to his father’s house.

24 And they shall hang on him all the glory of his father’s house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons.

24 And everyone who is glorious in his father’s house, from small to great, will have confidence in him, and they will be dependent on him. 24 And everyone who is glorious in his father’s house, from small to great, will have confidence in him, and they will be dependent on him.

25 In that day, says Yahweh of armies, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was on it shall be cut off; for Yahweh has spoken it.

25 On that day, this is what the Lord Sabaōth says. The man who was established in a secure place will be removed and will fall, and the glory that was on him will be taken away, because the Lord has spoken. 25 On that day, this is what the Lord Sabaōth says. The man who was established in a secure place will be removed and will fall, and the glory that was on him will be destroyed from him, because the Lord has spoken.
