The Devastation of Locusts
1 The word of Yahweh that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.
1 The word of the Lord that came to Jōēl the son of Bathouēl. | 1 The word of the Lord that came to Jōēl the son of Bathouēl. |
2 Hear this, you old men, and give ear, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?

2 Please hear these things, Oh elders; listen, all you who inhabit the land! Have such things happened in your days or in the days of your fathers? | 2 Hear these things, Oh elders; listen, all you who inhabit the land! Have such things happened in your days or in the days of your fathers? |
3 Tell you your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.
3 Tell your children of them, and your children their children, and their children to another generation. | 3 Tell your children of them, and your children their children, and their children to another generation. |
4 That which the palmerworm has left has the locust eaten; and what the locust has left has the cankerworm eaten; and what the cankerworm has left has the caterpillar eaten.
4 The grasshopper has devoured the scraps of the caterpillar, the locust has devoured the scraps of the grasshopper, the grain rust has devoured the scraps of the locusts. | 4 The grasshopper has devoured the scraps of the caterpillar, the locust has devoured the scraps of the grasshopper, the grain rust has devoured the scraps of the locusts. |
5 Awake, you drunkards, and weep; and howl, all you drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.
5 Sober up, you who are drunk from their wine and weep; wail, all you who drink wine to drunkeness, because gladness has been removed from your mouth, also joy. | 5 Sober up, you who are drunk from their wine and weep; wail, all you who drink wine to drunkeness, because gladness has been removed from your mouth, also joy. |
6 For a nation is come up on my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the cheek teeth of a great lion.
6 Because a nation has come up against my land, powerful and innumerable; its teeth are lion’s teeth, and its molars are those of a lion’s cub. | 6 Because a nation has come up against my land, powerful and innumerable; its teeth are lion’s teeth, and its molars are those of a lion’s cub. |
7 He has laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he has made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches of it are made white.
7 It has set my vine for annihilation and my fig trees for breaking; while searching it has searched it and thrown it down; its branches have turned white. | 7 It has set my vine for annihilation and my fig trees for breaking; while searching it has searched it and thrown it down; its branches have turned white. |
8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
8 Lament for me more than a bride dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth. | 8 Lament for me more than a bride dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth. |
9 The food offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of Yahweh; the priests, Yahweh’s ministers, mourn.

9 Sacrifice and libation are removed from the house of the Lord. Mourn, Oh priests, who minister at the altar, | 9 Sacrifice and libation are removed from the house of the Lord. Mourn, Oh priests, who minister at the altar of the Lord, |
10 The field is wasted, the land mourns; for the grain is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languishes.
10 because the plains have suffered misery. Let the land mourn, because the grain has suffered misery; the wine has dried up; the olive oil has been diminished. | 10 because the plains have suffered misery. Let the land mourn, because the grain has suffered misery; the wine has dried up; the olive oil has been diminished. |
11 Be ashamed, Oh you husbandmen; howl, Oh you vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.
11 The farmers have dried up. Wail, Oh farms, over the wheat and barley, because the harvest of the field is ruined. | 11 Farmers have dried up. Wail, Oh farms, over the wheat and barley, because the harvest of the field is ruined. |
12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languishes; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.
12 The vine has dried up, and the fig trees have dimished. Pomegranate and palm and apple, even all the trees of the field have dried up, because the sons of men have put joy to shame. | 12 The vine has dried up, and the fig trees have dimished. Pomegranate and palm and apple, even all the trees of the field have dried up, because the sons of men have put joy to shame. |
13 Gird yourselves, and lament, you priests: howl, you ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God; for the food offering and the drink offering is withheld from the house of your God.
13 Gird yourselves, and mourn, you priests; lament, you who minister at the altar. You entered, sleep in sackcloth, when you minister to God, because sacrifice and libation have failed from the house of your God. | 13 Gird yourselves, and mourn, you priests; lament, you who minister at the altar. Enter, sleep in sackcloth, when you minister to God, because sacrifice and libation have failed from the house of your God. |
Starvation and Drought
14 Consecrate a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of Yahweh your Elohim, and cry to Yahweh,
14 Consecrate a fast; proclaim a worship service; gather all the elders who inhabit the land into your God’s house, and cry out earnestly to the Lord. | 14 Consecrate a fast; proclaim a worship service; gather all the elders who inhabit the land into your God’s house, and cry out earnestly to the Lord. |
15 Alas for the day! for the day of Yahweh is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
15 Alas! Alas! Alas for the day, because the day of the Lord is near, and it will come like misery from misery. | 15 Alas! Alas! Alas for the day, because the day of the Lord is near, and it will come like misery from misery. |
16 Is not the food cut off before our eyes, yes, joy and gladness from the house of our God?
16 The food has been utterly destroyed before our eyes, gladness and joy from our God’s house. | 16 The food has been utterly destroyed before our eyes, gladness and joy from our God’s house. |
17 The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the grain is withered.
17 Heifers have jumped on their mangers; storehouses have been annihilated; wine presses have been razed to the ground, because the grain has dried up. | 17 Heifers have jumped on their mangers; storehouses have been annihilated; wine presses have been razed to the ground, because the grain has dried up. |
18 How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.
18
τί

18 How shall we store anything in them? The herds of cattle have wept, because there has been no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep have been annihilated. | 18 How shall we store anything in them? The herds of cattle have wept, because there has been no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep have been annihilated. |
19 Oh Yahweh, to you will I cry; for the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field.
19 I will shout to you, Oh Lord, because fire has destroyed the mature things of the wilderness and a flame has kindled all the trees of the field. | 19 I will shout to you, Oh Lord, because fire has destroyed the mature things of the wilderness and a flame has kindled all the trees of the field. |
20 The beasts of the field cry also to you; for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

20 Even the animals of the plain have looked up to you, because courses of water have dried up and fire has devoured the seasonable things of the wilderness. | 20 Even the animals of the plain have looked up to you, because courses of water have dried up and fire has devoured the seasonable things of the wilderness. |
