Chapter 2

AlexandrinusVaticanus

The Terrible Visitation

1 Blow you the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of Yahweh comes, for it is near at hand;

1 Trumpet with a trumpet in Siōn; proclaim on my holy mountain! And let all the inhabitants of the land be confounded, because the day of the Lord has come, because it is near; 1 Trumpet with a trumpet in Siōn; proclaim on my holy mountain! And let all the inhabitants of the land be confounded, because the day of the Lord has come, because it is near;

2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread on the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hasn’t been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

2 a day of darkness and gloom, a day of cloud and fog! Like dawn, a numerous and mighty people shall pour onto the mountains; their like has not been from of old, and after him there shall not be added throughout the years for generations of generations. 2 a day of darkness and gloom, a day of cloud and fog! Like dawn, a numerous and mighty people shall pour onto the mountains; their like has not been from of old, and after him there shall not be added throughout the years for generations of generations.

3 A fire devours before them; and behind them a flame burns: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yes, and nothing shall escape them.

3 In front of him there is a consuming fire, and a kindled flame behind him; the land before him is like an garden of delight, but a plain of annihilation behind him, and no one shall escape him. 3 In front of him there is a consuming fire, and a kindled flame behind him; the land before him is like an garden of delight, but a plain of annihilation behind him, and no one shall escape him.

4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.

4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses, and like horsemen so they shall pursue. 4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses, and like horsemen so they shall pursue.

5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devours the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.

5 Like the noise of chariots they shall leap on the tops of the mountains, and like the noise of a flame of fire devouring stubble and like a numerous and mighty people deployed for battle. 5 Like the noise of chariots they shall leap on the tops of the mountains, and like the noise of a flame of fire devouring stubble and like a numerous and mighty people deployed for battle.

6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.

6 Peoples will be crushed before him; every face will be like the soot of an earthen pot. 6 Peoples will be crushed before him; every face will be like the soot of an earthen pot.

7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march everyone on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks.

7 Like fighters they will run, and like men of battle they will scale the walls. And each will go by his own way and not turn aside from their paths. 7 Like fighters they will run, and like men of battle they will scale the walls. And each will go by his own way and not turn aside from their paths.

8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk everyone in his path; and when they fall on the sword, they shall not be wounded.

8 And no one will be estranged from his brother; weighed down by their own weapons, they shall go, and they shall fall by their arrows and not come to an end. 8 And no one will be estranged from his brother; weighed down by their own weapons, they shall go, and they shall fall by their arrows and not come to an end.

9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run on the wall, they shall climb up on the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.

9 They shall seize the city and run on the walls; they will scale the houses and enter through windows like thieves. 9 They shall seize the city and run on the walls; they will scale the houses and enter through windows like thieves.

10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

10 The land shall be disturbed before them, and the sky shall be shaken. The sun and the moon shall grow dark, and the stars shall discard their brightness. 10 The land shall be disturbed before them, and the sky shall be shaken. The sun and the moon shall grow dark, and the stars shall discard their brightness.

11 And Yahweh shall utter his voice before his army; for his camp is very great; for he is strong that executes his word; for the day of Yahweh is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

11 καὶ κύριος δώσει φωνὴν αὐτοῦ πρὸ προσώπου δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ, ὅτι πολλή ἐστιν σφόδρα παρεμβολὴ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἰσχυρὰ ἔργα λόγων αὐτοῦ· διότι μεγάλη ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου, μεγάλη καὶ ἐπιφανὴς σφόδρα, καὶ τίς ἔσται ἱκανὸς αὐτῇ; 11 καὶ Κύριος δώσει φωνὴν αὐτοῦ πρὸ προσώπου δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ, ὅτι πολλή ἔστι σφόδρα παρεμβολὴ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἰσχυρὰ ἔργα λόγων αὐτοῦ· διότι μεγάλη ἡμέρα Κυρίου, ἐπιφανὴς σφόδρα, καὶ τίς ἔσται ἱκανὸς αὐτῇ;
11 The Lord shall give forth his voice before his force, because his encampment is exceedingly large, because the deeds of his words are strong. Because great is the day of the Lord, great and exceedingly remarkable, and who shall be sufficient for it? 11 The Lord shall give forth his voice before his force, because his encampment is exceedingly large, because the deeds of his words are strong. Because great is the day of the Lord, exceedingly remarkable, and who shall be sufficient for it?

12 Therefore also now, says Yahweh, turn you even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.

12 Even now, says your Lord God, return to me with all your heart, with fasting and with weeping and with mourning, 12 Even now, says your Lord God, return to me with all your heart, with fasting and with weeping and with mourning,

13 And tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh your Elohim; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repents him of the evil.

13 and rip your hearts and not your clothing. And return to your Lord God, because he is merciful and compassionate, patient and very merciful and repenting concerning evils. 13 and rip your hearts and not your clothing. And return to your Lord God, because he is merciful and compassionate, patient and very merciful and repenting concerning evils.

14 Who knows if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a food offering and a drink offering to Yahweh your Elohim?

14 τίς οἶδεν εἰ ἐπιστρέψει καὶ μετανοήσει καὶ ὑπολείψεται ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ εὐλογίαν, θυσίαν καὶ σπονδὴν κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν; 14 τίς οἶδεν εἰ ἐπιστρέψει καὶ μετανοήσει καὶ ὑπολείψεται ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ εὐλογίαν καὶ θυσίαν καὶ σπονδὴν Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ ὑμῶν;
14 Who knows whether he will turn and repent and leave a blessing behind him, a sacrifice and a libation for your Lord God? 14 Who knows whether he will turn and repent and leave a blessing behind him, a sacrifice and a libation for your Lord God?

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, consecrate a fast, call a solemn assembly.

15 Trumpet with the trumpet in Siōn; consecrate a fast; proclaim a worship service; 15 Trumpet with the trumpet in Siōn; consecrate a fast; proclaim a worship service;

16 Gather the people, consecrate the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those who suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.

16 gather the people. Consecrate an assembly; select the elders; gather the infants sucking the breasts. Let the bridegroom come from his bedroom, and the bride from her bedroom. 16 gather the people. Consecrate an assembly; select the elders; gather the infants sucking the breasts. Let the bridegroom come from his bedroom, and the bride from her bedroom.

17 Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare your people, Oh Yahweh, and give not your heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them; therefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?

17 ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς κρηπῖδος τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου κλαύσονται οἱ ἱερεῖς οἱ λειτουργοῦντες κυρίῳ καὶ ἐροῦσιν Φεῖσαι, κύριε, τοῦ λαοῦ σου καὶ μὴ δῷς τὴν κληρονομίαν σου εἰς ὄνειδος τοῦ κατάρξαι αὐτῶν ἔθνη, ὅπως μὴ εἴπωσιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν Ποῦ ἐστιν θεὸς αὐτῶν; 17 ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς κρηπῖδος τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου κλαύσονται οἱ ἱερεῖς οἱ λειτουργοῦντες τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐροῦσι· φεῖσαι, Κύριε, τοῦ λαοῦ σου καὶ μὴ δῷς τὴν κληρονομίαν σου εἰς ὄνειδος τοῦ κατάρξαι αὐτῶν ἔθνη, ὅπως μὴ εἴπωσιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι· ποῦ ἐστιν Θεὸς αὐτῶν;
17 Between the altar base and the altar, the priests who minister to the Lord shall weep and say, “Spare your people, Oh Lord, and don’t give your inheritance into the reproach of being ruled over by nations, lest they say among the nations: ‘Where is their God?’ ” 17 Between the altar base and the altar, the priests who minister to the Lord shall weep and say, “Spare your people, Oh Lord, and don’t give your inheritance into the reproach of being ruled over by nations, lest they say among the nations: ‘Where is their God?’ ”

Deliverance Promised

18 Then will Yahweh be jealous for his land, and pity his people.

18 And the Lord became jealous for his land and spared his people. 18 And the Lord became jealous for his land and spared his people.

19 Yes, Yahweh will answer and say to his people, Behold, I will send you grain, and wine, and oil, and you shall be satisfied with it; and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen.

19 And the Lord answered and said to his people. Look! I am sending you grain and wine and olive oil, and you will be satisfied with them, and I will no more give you over to reproach among the nations. 19 And the Lord answered and said to his people. Look! I am sending you grain and wine and olive oil, and you will be satisfied with them, and I will no more give you over to reproach among the nations.

20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he has done great things.

20 And I will chase from you the one from the north and banish him to a dry land, and I will annihilate his face in the first sea and his back in the last sea, and his decay will go up, and his stink will go up, because he magnified his works. 20 And I will chase from you the one from the north and banish him to a dry land, and I will annihilate his face in the first sea and his back in the last sea, and his decay will go up, and his stink will go up, because he magnified his works.

21 Don’t fear, Oh land; be glad and rejoice; for Yahweh will do great things.

21 Take courage, Oh land, rejoice, and be happy, because the Lord has done great things! 21 Take courage, Oh land, rejoice, and be happy, because the Lord has done great things!

22 Don’t be afraid, you beasts of the field; for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree bears her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.

22 Take courage, you animals of the plain, because the plains of the wilderness have blossomed, because a tree has produced its fruit; a vine and fig tree have given their strength. 22 Take courage, you animals of the plain, because the plains of the wilderness have blossomed, because a tree has produced its fruit; fig tree and a vine have given their strength.

23 Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in Yahweh your Elohim; for he has given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

23 And you children of Siōn, rejoice, and be glad in your Lord God, because he has given you food for righteousness, and he shall send to you the early and later rain just as before. 23 And you children of Siōn, rejoice, and be glad in your Lord God, because he has given you food for righteousness, and he shall send to you the early and later rain just as before.

24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil.

24 The threshing floors shall be full of grain, and the vats shall overflow with wine and olive oil. 24 The threshing floors shall be full of grain, and the vats shall overflow with wine and olive oil.

25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.

25 And I will repay you for the years that the grasshopper devoured, and the locust and the rust and the caterpillar, my great power, which I sent against you. 25 And I will repay you for the years that the grasshopper devoured, and the locust and the rust and the caterpillar, my great power, which I sent against you.

26 And you shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of Yahweh your Elohim, that has dealt wondrously with you; and my people shall never be ashamed.

26 And while eating you shall eat and be satisfied and praise the name of your Lord God regarding the marvelous things he has done with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. 26 And while eating you shall eat and be satisfied and praise the name of your Lord God regarding the marvelous things he has done with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.

27 And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israēl, and that I am Yahweh your Elohim, and none else; and my people shall never be ashamed.

27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israēl, and I am your Lord God, and there is none other but me. And my people shall never be disgraced forever. 27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israēl, and I am your Lord God, and there is none other but me. And my people shall never be disgraced forever.

The Promise of the Spirit

28 [M3:1] And it will happen afterward, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.

28 And it shall be after these things, I will pour out of my spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 28 And it shall be after these things, I will pour out of my spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

29 [M3:2] And also on the servants and on the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

29 Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out of my spirit. 29 Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out of my spirit.

The Day of Yahweh

30 [M3:3] And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

30 I will give wonders in the sky and on land: blood and fire and the vapour of smoke. 30 I will give wonders in the sky and on land: blood and fire and the vapour of smoke.

31 [M3:4] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of Yahweh come.
