Chapter 2

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Woe to Oppressors

1 Woe to those who devise iniquity, and work evil on their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.

1 They came devising troubles and working out evil things on their beds. And as soon as it was day, they would accomplish them, for they did not lift their hands to God. 1 They came devising troubles and working out evil things on their beds. And as soon as it was day, they would accomplish them, for they did not lift their hands to God.

2 And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away; so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

2 And they would covet fields and plunder orphans and oppress households, and they would plunder a man and his home, a man and his inheritance. 2 And they would covet fields and plunder orphans and oppress households, and they would plunder a man and his home, a man and his inheritance.

3 Therefore thus says Yahweh; Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which you shall not remove your necks; neither shall you go haughtily; for this time is evil.

3 Therefore this is what the Lord says. Look! I am devising evil against this tribe out of which you shall not remove your necks nor walk upright suddenly, because it is an evil time. 3 Therefore this is what the Lord says. Look! I am devising evil against this tribe out of which you shall not remove your necks nor walk upright suddenly, because it is an evil time.

4 In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say, We are utterly spoiled: he has changed the portion of my people: how has he removed it from me! turning away he has divided our fields.

4 On that day a parable shall be taken up against you, and a dirge will be wailed with a tune, saying, “In misery, we suffered misery; a portion of my people was measured by a rope, and there was none who will prevent him from turning away. Our fields were divided up.” 4 On that day a parable shall be taken up against you, and a dirge will be wailed with a tune, saying, “In misery, we suffered misery; a portion of my people was measured by a rope, and there was none who is preventing him from turning away. Our fields were divided up.”

5 Therefore you shall have none who shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of Yahweh.

5 Therefore you will have no one to cast the line by lot in the assembly of the Lord. 5 Therefore you will have no one to cast the line by lot in the assembly of the Lord.

6 Don’t prophesy, they say to those who prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, that they shall not take shame.

6 “Stop weeping with tears, nor let them shed tears over these events, for he will not remove your disgraces.” 6 “Stop weeping with tears, nor let them shed tears over these events, for he will not remove your disgraces.”

7 Oh you who are named the house of Jacōb, is the spirit of Yahweh restricted? Are these his doings? Don’t my words do good to him who walks uprightly?

7 λέγων Οἶκος Ἰακὼβ παρώργισεν πνεῦμα κυρίου· εἰ ταῦτα τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα αὐτοῦ ἐστιν;
οὐχ οἱ λόγοι αὐτοῦ εἰσιν καλοὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὀρθοὶ πεπόρευνται;
7 λέγων· οἶκος Ἰακὼβ παρώργισε πνεῦμα Κυρίου· οὐ ταῦτα τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα αὐτοῦ ἐστιν;
οὐχ οἱ λόγοι αὐτοῦ εἰσι καλοὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὀρθοὶ πεπόρευνται;
7 A person says, “The house of Jacōb provoked the spirit of the Lord.” If these are his practices, are not his words good with him, and have they not proceeded upright? 7 A person says, “The house of Jacōb provoked the spirit of the Lord.” If these are his practices, are not his words good with him, and have they not proceeded upright?

8 Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: you pull off the robe with the garment from those who pass by securely as men returned from war.

8 And previously, my people resisted in hostility; contrary to his peace they flayed his skin to remove hope in the ruin of war. 8 And previously, my people resisted in hostility; contrary to his peace they flayed his skin to remove hope in the ruin of war.

9 The women of my people have you cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children you have taken away my glory forever.

9 Therefore, leaders of my people shall be thrown out of their luxury homes. On account of their evil practices, they have been expelled. Draw near to the everlasting mountains. 9 Therefore, leaders of my people shall be thrown out of their luxury homes. On account of their evil practices, they have been expelled. Draw near to the everlasting mountains.

10 Arise, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction.

10 Arise, and go, because this rest is not for you, due to uncleanness. You were corrupted with corruption; 10 Arise, and go, because this rest is not for you, due to uncleanness. You were corrupted with corruption;

11 If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood lie, saying, I will prophesy to you of wine and of intoxicant; he shall even be the prophet of this people.

11 you were pursued without anyone pursuing. A spirit created a lie; it dripped on you as wine and intoxicating drink. And it shall be that from the drop of this people, 11 you were pursued without anyone pursuing. A spirit created a lie; it dripped on you as wine and intoxicating drink. And it shall be that from the drop of this people,

12 I will surely assemble, Oh Jacōb, all of you; I will surely gather the remnant of Israēl; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men.

12 Jacōb shall be gathered together with all. While welcoming, I will welcome the remaining of Israēl; I will establish their return at the same time. Like sheep in affliction, like a flock in the midst of their stall, they shall leap away from men. 12 while gathering, Jacōb shall be gathered together with all. While welcoming, I will welcome the remaining of Israēl; I will establish their return at the same time. Like sheep in affliction, like a flock in the midst of their stall, they shall leap away from men.

13 The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it; and their king shall pass before them, and Yahweh on the head of them.

13 They have cut through the breach before them, and they passed through the gate and went out through it. And their king went out before them, but the Lord shall lead them. 13 They have cut through the breach before them, and they passed through the gate and went out through it. And their king went out before them, but the Lord shall lead them.
