(LXX 43)

AlexandrinusVaticanus

To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.

For the end, a Psalm for instruction, for the sons of Kore. For the end, a Psalm for instruction, for the sons of Kore.

1 We have heard with our ears, Oh God, our fathers have told us, what work you did in their days, in the times of old.

1 Oh God, we heard with our ears; our fathers reported to us a deed which you worked in their days, in ancient days; 1 Oh God, we heard with our ears; our fathers reported to us a deed which you worked in their days, in ancient days;

2 How you drove out the heathen with your hand, and planted them; how you afflicted the people, and cast them out.

2 Your hand destroyed the heathen, and you planted them; you afflicted the peoples, and cast them out. 2 Your hand destroyed the heathen, and you planted them; you afflicted the peoples, and cast them out.

3 For they didn’t get the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your countenance, because you had a favour to them.

3 for they didn’t inherit land by their own sword, and their own arm didn’t save them; rather, your right hand and your arm, and the illumination of your countenance, because you took delight in them. 3 for they didn’t inherit land by their own sword, and their own arm didn’t save them; rather, your right hand and your arm, and the illumination of your countenance, because you took delight in them.

4 You are my King, Oh God; command deliverances for Jacōb.

4 You are my very King and my God, he commands deliverance for Jacōb. 4 You are my very King and my God, he commands deliverance for Jacōb.

5 Through you will we push down our enemies; through your name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

5 By you we shall gore our enemies, and by your name we shall despise those who rise up against us. 5 By you we shall gore our enemies, and by your name we shall despise those who rise up against us.

6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

6 For I shall not have confidence in my bow, and my sword will not save me. 6 For I shall not have confidence in my bow, and my sword will not save me.

7 But you have saved us from our enemies, and have put them to shame that hated us.

7 For you saved us from those who afflict us, and you put to shame those who hate us. 7 For you saved us from those who afflict us, and you put to shame those who hate us.

8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise your name for ever. Selah.

8 In God we shall be praised the whole day, and in your name we shall acknowledge forever. Musical pause. 8 In God we shall be praised the whole day, and in your name we shall acknowledge forever. Musical pause.

9 But you have cast off, and put us to shame; and go not forth with our armies.

9 But now, you drove us away and put us to shame and won’t go out among our armies. 9 But now, you drove us away and put us to shame and won’t go out among our armies.

10 You make us to turn back from the enemy; and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

10 Rather than our enemies, you turned us back, and those who hate us kept snatching were plundering for themselves. 10 Rather than our enemies, you turned us back, and those who hate us kept snatching were plundering for themselves.

11 You have given us like sheep appointed for food; and have scattered us among the heathen.

11 You gave us like sheep for eating, and among the nations you scattered us. 11 You gave us like sheep for eating, and among the nations you scattered us.

12 You sell your people for nothing, and don’t increase your wealth by their price.

12 You sold your people without price, and there was no quantity in their exchange. 12 You sold your people without price, and there was no quantity in their exchange.

13 You make us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to those who are all around us.

13 You made us a disgrace to our neighbours, an insult and laughingstock to those around us. 13 You made us a disgrace to our neighbours, an insult and laughingstock to those around us.

14 You make us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

14 You made us into an byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. 14 You made us into an byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face has covered me,

15 My embarrassment is before me the whole day, and the shame of my face covered me, 15 My embarrassment is before me the whole day, and the shame of my face covered me,

16 For the voice of him who reproaches and blasphemes; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

16 from the sound of one that insults and jabbers, from the face of the enemy and pursuer. 16 from the sound of one that insults and jabbers, from the face of the enemy and pursuer.

17 All this is come on us; yet we have not forgotten you, neither have we dealt falsely in your covenant.

17 All these things came on us, and we didn’t forget you, and we did no wrong against your covenant. 17 All these things came on us, and we didn’t forget you, and we did no wrong against your covenant.

18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from your way;

18 And our heart didn’t withdraw back, and you diverted our paths from your way, 18 And our heart didn’t withdraw back, and you diverted our paths from your way,

19 Though you have sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

19 because you humbled us in a place of mistreatment and a shadow of death covered us. 19 because you humbled us in a place of mistreatment and a shadow of death covered us.

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

20 If we forgot the name of our God and if we had stretched out our hands to a foreign god, 20 If we forgot the name of our God and if we had stretched out our hands to a foreign god,

21 Shall not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

21 οὐχὶ θεὸς ἐκζητήσει ταῦτα;
21 οὐχὶ Θεὸς ἐκζητήσει ταῦτα;
21 wouldn’t God search out these things? For he knows the secrets of the heart; 21 wouldn’t God search out these things? For he knows the secrets of the heart;

22 Yes, for your sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

22 because for your sake we are being put to death the whole day, we were determined as sheep for slaughter. 22 because for your sake we are being put to death the whole day, we were determined as sheep for slaughter.

23 Awake, why do you sleep, Oh Lord? Arise, cast us not off for ever.

23 Ἐξεγέρθητι, ἵνα τί ὑπνοῖς κύριε;
23 ἐξεγέρθητι· ἱνατί ὑπνοῖς, Κύριε;
23 Awake! Why do you sleep, Oh Lord? Arise, and don’t reject us totally! 23 Awake! Why do you sleep, Oh Lord? Arise, and don’t reject us totally!

24 Why hide you your face, and forget our affliction and our oppression?

24 ἵνα τί τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀποστρέφεις;
ἐπιλανθάνῃ τῆς πτωχείας ἡμῶν καὶ τῆς θλίψεως ἡμῶν;
24 ἱνατί τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀποστρέφεις;
ἐπιλανθάνῃ τῆς πτωχείας ἡμῶν καὶ τῆς θλίψεως ἡμῶν;
24 Why do you turn away your face? Why do you forget our poverty and our affliction? 24 Why do you turn away your face? Why do you forget our poverty and our affliction?

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the earth.

25 Because our soul was humbled into the dust, our stomach was glued to the ground. 25 Because our soul was humbled into the dust, our stomach was glued to the ground.

26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for your mercies’ sake.

26 Arise, Oh Lord; help us, and redeem us for the sake of your name. 26 Arise, Oh Lord; help us, and redeem us for the sake of your name.
