Sennacherib Invades Judah

1 Now it happened in the 14th year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.

1 And it happened in the 14th year of the reign of Ezekias that Sennachērim, king of the Assyrians, went up against the strong cities of Judea and took them. 1 And it happened in the 14th year of the reign of Ezekias that Sennachērim, king of the Assyrians, went up against the strong cities of Judea and took them.

2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field.

2 The king of the Assyrians sent Rhapsakēs out of Lachis to Jerousalēm, to King Ezekias, with a great force.
And he stood by the aqueduct of the upper pool in the way of the Fuller’s Field.

And he stood by the aqueduct of the upper pool in the way of the Fuller’s Field.

3 Then came forth to him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.

3 And there went out to him Eliakim the son of Chelkias, the manager, and Somnas, the secretary, and Jōach the son of Asaph, the recorder. 3 And there went out to him Eliakim the son of Chelkias, the manager, and Somnas, the secretary, and Jōach the son of Asaph, the recorder.

4 And Rabshakeh said to them, Say now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this in which you trust?

4 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ῥαψάκης εἴπατε Ἐζεκίᾳ τάδε λέγει βασιλεὺς μέγας βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων τί πεποιθὼς εἶ;
4 καὶ εἶπε αὐτοῖς Ῥαψάκης· εἴπατε Ἐζεκίᾳ· τάδε λέγει βασιλεὺς μέγας, βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων· τί πεποιθὼς εἶ;
4 And Rhapsakēs said to them, “Say to Ezekias: This is what the great king, the king of the Assyrians, says: Why are you confident? 4 And Rhapsakēs said to them, “Say to Ezekias: This is what the great king, the king of the Assyrians, says: Why are you confident?

5 I say, you say, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?

5 μὴ ἐν βουλῇ λόγοις χειλέων παράταξις γίνεται;
καὶ νῦν ἐπὶ τίνι πέποιθας ὅτι ἀπειθεῖς μοι;
5 μὴ ἐν βουλῇ λόγοις χειλέων παράταξις γίνεται;
καὶ νῦν ἐπὶ τίνα πέποιθας, ὅτι ἀπειθεῖς μοι;
5 A battle line doesn’t come to be with advice or words of the lips, does it? And now in whom do you have confidence that you are disobedient to me? 5 A battle line doesn’t come to be with advice or words of the lips, does it? And now in whom do you have confidence that you are disobedient to me?

6 Lo, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it; so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

6 Look! You have confidence in Aigypt, this broken reed-made rod; whoever leans on it, it will go into his hand.
Such is Pharaō, king of Aigypt, and all who have confidence in him.
6 Look! You have confidence in Aigypt, this broken reed-made rod; whoever leans on it, it will go into his hand.
Such is Pharaō, king of Aigypt, and all who have confidence in him.

7 But if you say to me, We trust in Yahweh our Elohim: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, You shall worship before this altar?

7 But if you say, ‛We trust in our Lord God,’ 7 But if you say, ‛We trust in our Lord God,’

8 Now therefore give pledges, please, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you 2000 horses, if you be able on your part to set riders on them.

8 join now with my lord the king of the Assyrians.
I will give you 2000 horses, if you will be able to set riders on them.
8 join now with my lord the king of the Assyrians.
I will give you 2000 horses, if you will be able to set riders on them.

9 How then will you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

9 καὶ πῶς δύνασθε ἀποστρέψαι εἰς πρόσωπον τοπάρχου ἑνός;
9 How then are you able to turn away from the face of one governor?
Those who trust in Aigypt for horse and rider are domestics.
9 How then are you able to turn away from the face of one governor?
Those who trust in Aigypt for horse and rider are domestics.

10 And am I now come up without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

10 καὶ νῦν μὴ ἄνευ κυρίου ἀνέβημεν ἐπὶ τὴν χώραν ταύτην πολεμῆσαι αὐτήν; 10 καὶ νῦν μὴ ἄνευ Κυρίου ἀνέβημεν ἐπὶ τὴν χώραν ταύτην πολεμῆσαι αὐτήν;
10 And now, is it without the Lord that we have come up against this country to war against it?” 10 And now, is it without the Lord that we have come up against this country to war against it?”
The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

11 Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah to Rabshakeh, Speak, please, to your servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it; and don’t speak to us in the Joudean language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

11 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἐλιακὶμ καὶ Σομνὰς καὶ Ἰωὰχ λάλησον πρὸς τοὺς παῖδάς σου Συριστί, ἀκούομεν γὰρ ἡμεῖς, καὶ μὴ λάλει πρὸς ἡμᾶς Ἰουδαϊστί· καὶ ἵνα τί λαλεῖς εἰς τὰ ὦτα τῶν ἀνθρώπων τῶν ἐπὶ τῷ τείχει; 11 καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἑλιακεὶμ καὶ Σομνᾶς καὶ Ἰωάχ· λάλησον πρὸς τοὺς παῖδάς σου Συριστί, ἀκούομεν γὰρ ἡμεῖς, καὶ μὴ λάλει πρὸς ἡμᾶς Ἰουδαϊστί· καὶ ἱνατί λαλεῖς εἰς τὰ ὦτα τῶν ἀνθρώπων τῶν ἐπὶ τῷ τείχει;
11 Then Eliakim, Somnas and Jōach said to him, “Speak to your servants in Syrian, for we understand it; don’t speak to us in Judean.
And why do you speak to the ears of the men who are on the wall?”
11 Then Eliakim, Somnas and Jōach said to him, “Speak to your servants in Syrian, for we understand it; don’t speak to us in Judean.
And why do you speak to the ears of the men who are on the wall?”

12 But Rabshakeh said, Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? Hasn’t he sent me to the men who sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?

12 καὶ εἶπεν Ῥαψάκης πρὸς αὐτούς μὴ πρὸς τὸν κύριον ὑμῶν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἀπέσταλκέν με κύριός μου λαλῆσαι τοὺς λόγους τούτους;
οὐχὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ τῷ τείχει, ἵνα φάγωσιν κόπρον καὶ πίωσιν οὖρον μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἅμα;
12 καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ῥαψάκης· μὴ πρὸς τὸν Κύριον ὑμῶν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἀπέσταλκέ με κύριός μου λαλῆσαι τοὺς λόγους τούτους;
οὐχὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ τῷ τείχει, ἵνα φάγωσι κόπρον καὶ πίωσιν οὖρον μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἅμα;
12 But Rhapsakēs said to them, “Has my lord sent me to speak these words to your lord or to you?
Is it not to the men sitting on the wall so that they may eat dung and drink urine together with you?”
12 But Rhapsakēs said to them, “Has my lord sent me to speak these words to your lord or to you?
Is it not to the men sitting on the wall so that they may eat dung and drink urine together with you?”

13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

13 Then Rhapsakēs stood and called out in a loud voice in Judean and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of the Assyrians! 13 Then Rhapsakēs stood and called out in a loud voice in Judean and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of the Assyrians!

14 Thus says the king, Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he shall not be able to deliver you.

14 This is what the king says. ‛Don’t let Ezekias deceive you with words that won’t be able to rescue you. 14 This is what the king says. ‛Don’t let Ezekias deceive you with words that won’t be able to rescue you.

15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, Yahweh will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

15 Don’t let Ezekias say to you, God will deliver you, and this city won’t be given up into the hand of the king of the Assyrians.’ 15 Don’t let Ezekias say to you, God will deliver you, and this city won’t be given up into the hand of the king of the Assyrians.’

16 Listen not to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me; and eat you everyone of his vine, and everyone of his fig tree, and drink you everyone the waters of his own cistern;

16 Don’t listen to Ezekias.
This is what the king of the Assyrians says. ‛If you want to be blessed, come out to me; then everyone of you will eat from his own grapevine and fig trees and drink water from your own reservoir,
16 Don’t listen to Ezekias.
This is what the king of the Assyrians says. ‛If you want to be blessed, come out to me; then everyone of you will eat from his own grapevine and fig trees and drink water from your own reservoir,

17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

17 until I come and take you to a land like your land, a land of grain and wine and breads and vineyards. 17 until I come and take you to a land like your land, a land of grain and wine and breads and vineyards.

18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, Yahweh will deliver us. Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

μὴ ἐρρύσαντο οἱ θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ χώραν ἐκ χειρὸς βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων;
μὴ ἐρρύσαντο οἱ θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ χώραν ἐκ χειρὸς βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων;
18 Don’t let Ezekias deceive you by saying, your God will rescue you.
The gods of the nations haven’t rescued each one his own country out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians, have they?
18 Don’t let Ezekias deceive you by saying, your God will rescue you.
The gods of the nations haven’t rescued each one his own country out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians, have they?

19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? And have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

19 ποῦ ἐστιν θεὸς Αἰμὰθ καὶ Ἀρφάθ;
καὶ ποῦ θεὸς τῆς πόλεως Σεπφαρίμ;
μὴ ἐδύναντο ῥύσασθαι Σαμάρειαν ἐκ χειρός μου;
19 ποῦ ἐστιν θεὸς Αἰμὰθ καὶ Ἀρφάθ;
καὶ ποῦ θεὸς τῆς πόλεως Σεπφαρείμ; μὴ ἐδύναντο ῥύσασθαι Σαμάρειαν ἐκ χειρός μου;
19 Where is the god of Aimath and Arphath?
And where is the god of the city of Seppharites?
Have they been able to deliver Samaria out of my hand?
19 Where is the god of Aimath and Arphath?
And where is the god of the city of Seppharites?
Have they been able to deliver Samaria out of my hand?

20 Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

20 τίς τῶν θεῶν πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων ἐρρύσατο τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς χειρός μου, ὅτι ῥύσεται θεὸς Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἐκ χειρός μου; 20 τίς τῶν θεῶν πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων, ὅστις ἐρρύσατο τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ ἐκ χειρός μου, ὅτι ῥύσεται Θεὸς Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἐκ χειρός μου;
20 Which of the gods of all these nations has rescued his land out of my hand, that God should rescue Jerousalēm out of my hand?’ ” 20 Which of the gods of all these nations has rescued his land out of my hand, that God should rescue Jerousalēm out of my hand?’ ”

21 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

21 But they were silent, and no one answered him a word, because the king had ordered that no one should answer. 21 But they were silent, and no one answered him a word, because the king had ordered that no one should answer.

22 Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

22 Then Eliakim the son of Chelkias, the manager, and Somnas, the secretary of the army, and Jōach the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Ezekias with their tunics torn and reported to him the words of Rhapsakēs. 22 Then Eliakim the son of Chelkias, the manager, and Somnas, the secretary of the army, and Jōach the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Ezekias with their tunics torn and reported to him the words of Rhapsakēs.
