Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah’s Help

1 And it happened, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Yahweh.

1 And it happened, when King Ezekias heard it, that he tore his clothes, put sackcloth around him and went up into the house of the Lord. 1 And it happened, when King Ezekias heard it, that he tore his clothes, put sackcloth around him and went up into the house of the Lord.

2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

2 And he sent Eliakim the manager and Somnas, the secretary, and the elder priests, with sackcloth around them, to the prophet Ēsaias son of Amōs. 2 And he sent Eliakim the manager and Somnas, the secretary, and the elder priests, with sackcloth around them, to the prophet Ēsaias son of Amōs.

3 And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

3 They said to him, This is what Ezekias says, “Today is a day of affliction and of reproach and of rebuke and of anger, because the labour pains have come to the one giving birth, but she has no strength to give birth. 3 They said to him, This is what Ezekias says, “Today is a day of affliction and of reproach and of rebuke and of anger, because the labour pains have come to the one giving birth, but she has no strength to give birth.

4 It may be Yahweh your Elohim will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which Yahweh your Elohim has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.

4 May the Lord, your God, listen to the words of Rhapsakēs, which the king of the Assyrians has sent to reproach the living God, even reproachful words that the Lord, your God, has heard; therefore you will pray to the Lord your God concerning these who are left.” 4 May the Lord, your God, listen to the words of Rhapsakēs, which the king of the Assyrians has sent to reproach the living God, even reproachful words that the Lord, your God, has heard; therefore you will pray to the Lord your God concerning these who are left.”

5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

5 And the servants of the king came to Ēsaias, 5 And the servants of king Ezekias came to Hēsaias,

6 And Isaiah said to them, Thus you shall say to your master, Thus says Yahweh, Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

6 and Ēsaias said to them, “Thus you will say to your lord, ‛This is what the Lord says. Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the ambassadors of the king of the Assyrians have reproached me. 6 and Hēsaias said to them, “Thus you will say to your lord, ‛This is what the Lord says. Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the ambassadors of the king of the Assyrians have reproached me.

7 Behold, I will send a blast on him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

7 Look! I will put a spirit into him, and when he hears a report, he will return to his country, and he will fall by the dagger in his own land.’ ” 7 Look! I will put a spirit into him, and when he hears a report, he will return to his country, and he will fall by the dagger in his own land.’ ”

8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

8 Rhapsakēs returned and found the king besieging Lomnan. And the king of the Assyrians heard that 8 Rhapsakēs returned and found the king of Assyria was besieging Lomnan. And the king of the Assyrians heard that

9 And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with you. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

9 Tharaka, king of the Aithiopians, had gone out to besiege him. When he heard it, he turned back and sent messengers to Ezekias, saying, 9 Tharaka, king of the Aithiopians, had gone out to besiege him. When he heard it, he turned back and sent messengers to Ezekias, saying,

10 Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Don’t let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

10 “Thus you shall speak to King Ezekias of Judea. Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you by saying, Jerousalēm won’t be given over into the hands of the king of the Assyrians. 10 “Thus you shall speak to King Ezekias of Judea. Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you by saying, Jerousalēm won’t be given over into the hands of the king of the Assyrians.

11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and you shall be delivered?

11 οὐκ ἤκουσας ἐποίησαν βασιλεῖς Ἀσσυρίων πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ὡς ἀπώλεσαν; 11 οὐκ ἤκουσας ἐποίησαν βασιλεῖς Ἀσσυρίων πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ὡς ἀπώλεσαν;
11 Or have you not heard the things that the kings of the Assyrians have done–how they have destroyed the whole land? 11 Or have you not heard the things that the kings of the Assyrians have done–how they have destroyed the whole land?

12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them who my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?

12 μὴ ἐρρύσαντο αὐτοὺς οἱ θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν, οὓς οἱ πατέρες μου ἀπώλεσαν, τήν τε Γωζὰν καὶ Χαρρὰν καὶ Ῥαφές, αἵ εἰσιν ἐν χώρᾳ Θεμάδ; 12 μὴ ἐρρύσαντο αὐτοὺς οἱ θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν, οὓς ἀπώλεσαν οἱ πατέρες μου, τήν τε Γωζᾶν καὶ Χαρὰν καὶ Ῥαφές, αἵ εἰσιν ἐν χώρᾳ Θεεμάθ;
12 The gods of the nations didn’t rescue them whom my fathers destroyed, both Gōzan and Charran and Raphes, which are in the country of Themad, did they? 12 The gods of the nations didn’t rescue them whom my fathers destroyed, both Gōzan and Charan and Raphes, which are in the country of Theemath, did they?

13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?

13 ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ βασιλεῖς Αἰμὰθ καὶ Ἀρφὰθ καὶ πόλεως Σεπφαρίμ, Ἀνάγ, Οὐγαυά; 13 ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ βασιλεῖς Αἰμὰθ καὶ Ἀρφὰθ καὶ πόλεως Σεπφαρείμ, Ἀνάγ, Οὐγαυά;
13 Where are the kings of Aimath and Arphath and of the city of Seppharites, of Anag, of Ougava?” 13 Where are the kings of Aimath and Arphath and of the city of Seppharites, of Anag, of Ougava?”

Hezekiah’s Prayer in the Temple

14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of Yahweh, and spread it before Yahweh.

14 Ezekias received the letter from the messengers and opened it before the Lord. 14 Ezekias received the letter from the messengers and opened it before the Lord.

15 And Hezekiah prayed to Yahweh, saying,

15 And Ezekias prayed to the Lord, saying, 15 And Ezekias prayed to the Lord, saying,

16 Oh Yahweh of armies, God of Israēl, that dwells between the cherubs, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: you have made heaven and earth.

16 “Oh Lord Sabaōth, God of Israēl, who sits on the cheroubs, you alone are God of every kingdom of the inhabited world; you have made the sky and the land. 16 “Oh Lord Sabaōth, God of Israēl, who sits on the cheroubs, you alone are God of every kingdom of the inhabited world; you have made the sky and the land.

17 Incline your ear, Oh Yahweh, and hear; open your eyes, Oh Yahweh, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which has sent to reproach the living God.

17 Listen, Oh Lord! Look, Oh Lord! and see the words that Sennachērim has sent to reproach the living God. 17 Oh Lord, incline your ear, listen, Oh Lord! Open your eyes, see. And Look, Oh Lord! and see the words that Sennachērim has sent to reproach the living God.

18 Of a truth, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,

18 For truly the kings of the Assyrians have made desolate the whole inhabited world and their country 18 For truly, Oh Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have made desolate the whole inhabited world and their country

19 And have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

19 and have thrown their idols into the fire, for they were no gods, but the works of men’s hands–wood and stone–and they destroyed them. 19 and have thrown their idols into the fire, for they were no gods, but the works of men’s hands–wood and stone–and they destroyed them.

20 Now therefore, Oh Yahweh our Elohim, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only.

20 But you, Oh Lord, our God, save us from their hand in order that every kingdom of the land may know that you alone are God.” 20 But you, Oh Lord, our God, save us from their hand in order that every kingdom of the land may know that you alone are God.”

God Answers through Isaiah

21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria.

21 Then Ēsaias son of Amōs was sent to Ezekias and said to him. “This is what the Lord says, the God of Israēl. I have heard the things you have prayed to me concerning King Sennachērim of the Assyrians. 21 Then Hēsaias son of Amōs was sent to Ezekias and said to him. “This is what the Lord says, the God of Israēl. I have heard the things you have prayed to me concerning King Sennachērim of the Assyrians.

22 This is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, has despised you, and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

22 This is the word that God has spoken concerning him. Virgin daughter Siōn has despised and mocked you; daughter Jerousalēm has shaken her head at you. 22 This is the word that God has spoken concerning him. Virgin daughter Siōn has despised and mocked you; daughter Jerousalēm has shaken her head at you.

23 Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you exalted your voice, and lifted up your eyes on high? Even against the Holy One of Israēl.

23 τίνα ὠνείδισας καὶ παρώξυνας;
πρὸς τίνα ὕψωσας τὴν φωνήν σου;
23 τίνα ὠνείδισας καὶ παρώξυνας;
πρὸς τίνα ὕψωσας τὴν φωνήν σου;
καὶ οὐκ ᾖρας εἰς ὕψος τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου πρὸς τὸν ἅγιον τοῦ Ἰσραήλ;
23 Whom have you reproached and provoked?
Or against whom have you raised your voice?
And you didn’t lift your eyes on high to the Holy One of Israēl.
23 Whom have you reproached and provoked?
Or against whom have you raised your voice?
And you didn’t lift your eyes on high to the Holy One of Israēl.

24 By your servants have you reproached the Lord, and have said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars of it, and the choice fir trees of it; and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.

24 Because by your messengers you have reproached the Lord, for you said, ‛With the multitude of my chariots I have gone up to the height of the mountains and to the utmost limits of Libanon, and I cut down the height of its cedar and the beauty of its cypress, and I entered into the height of its forest region, 24 Because by your messengers you have reproached the Lord, for you said, ‛With the multitude of my chariots I have gone up to the height of the mountains and to the utmost limits of Libanon, and I cut down the height of its cedar and the beauty of its cypress, and I entered into the height of its forest region,

25 I have dug, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.

25 and I laid a bridge and emptied the waters and every accumulation of water.’ 25 and I laid a bridge and emptied the waters and every accumulation of water.’

26 Have you not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? Now have I brought it to pass, that you should be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.

26 οὐ ταῦτα ἤκουσας πάλαι, ἐγὼ ἐποίησα;
26 οὐ ταῦτα ἤκουσας πάλαι, ἐγὼ ἐποίησα;
26 Haven’t you heard long ago of these things that I have done?
From ancient days I ordained them, but now I have displayed them, to make the nations desolate that are in strong places and those who dwell in strong cities.
26 Haven’t you heard long ago of these things that I have done?
From ancient days I ordained them, but now I have displayed them, to make the nations desolate that are in strong places and those who dwell in strong cities.

27 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blasted before it be grown up.

27 I relaxed their hands, and they have withered, and they have become like dry grass on housetops and like wild grass. 27 I relaxed their hands, and they have withered, and they have become like dry grass on housetops and like wild grass.

28 But I know your abode, and your going out, and your coming in, and your rage against me.

28 But now I know your resting place, your going out and coming in. 28 But now I know your resting place, your going out and coming in.

29 Because your rage against me, and your tumult, is come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.

29 And your wrath with which you have enraged and your bitterness have come up to me; so I will put a muzzle on your nose and a bit on your lips; and I will return you to the road by which you came. 29 And your wrath with which you have enraged and your bitterness have come up to me; so I will put a muzzle on your nose and a bit on your lips; and I will return you to the road by which you came.

30 And this shall be a sign to you, You shall eat this year such as grows of itself; and the second year what springs of the same; and in the third year sow you, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of it.

30 And this shall be the sign for you: This year eat what you have sown, and in the second year what is left; then in the third year sow, reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 30 And this shall be the sign for you: This year eat what you have sown, and in the second year what is left; then in the third year sow, reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.

31 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

31 And those who are left in Judea shall take root downward and bear seed upward, 31 And those who are left in Judea shall take root downward and bear seed upward,

32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they who escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of Yahweh of armies shall do this.

32 because the ones that are left will come out of Jerousalēm, and from Mount Siōn those who are saved. The zeal of the Lord Sabaōth will do these things. 32 because out of Jerousalēm shall be those who are left, and from Mount Siōn those who are saved. The zeal of the Lord Sabaōth will do these things.

33 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.

33 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of the Assyrians. He shall not come into this city nor throw an arrow against it nor throw a shield against it nor set up a siege tower against it. 33 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of the Assyrians. He shall not come into this city nor throw an arrow against it nor throw a shield against it nor set up a siege tower against it.

34 By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and shall not come into this city, says Yahweh.

34 But by the way that he came, by the same he shall return. This is what the Lord says. 34 But by the way that he came, by the same he shall return and shall not enter this city. This is what the Lord says.

35 For I will defend this city to save it for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

35 ‛I will shield this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.’ ” 35 ‛I will shield this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.’ ”
