Chapter 26

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from Yahweh, saying,

1 ἐν ἀρχῇ βασιλέως Ἰωακὶμ υἱοῦ Ἰωσία ἐγενήθη λόγος οὗτος παρὰ κυρίου 1 ἐν ἀρχῇ βασιλέως Ἰωακεὶμ υἱοῦ Ἰωσία ἐγενήθη λόγος οὗτος παρὰ Κυρίου·
1 In the beginning of the reign of king Joakim son of Josias there came this word from the Lord. 1 In the beginning of the reign of king Joakim son of Josias there came this word from the Lord.

2 Thus says Yahweh; Stand in the court of Yahweh’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in Yahweh’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them; diminish not a word.

2 Thus said the Lord; Stand in the court of the Lord’s house, and you shall declare to all the Joudeans, and to all that come to worship in the house of the Lord, all the words which I commanded you to speak to them; abate not one word. 2 Thus said the Lord; Stand in the court of the Lord’s house, and you shall declare to all the Joudeans, and to all that come to worship in the house of the Lord, all the words which I commanded you to speak to them; abate not one word.

3 If so be they will listen, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do to them because of the evil of their doings.

3 Peradventure they will hear, and turn everyone from his evil way: then I will cease from the evils which I purpose to do to them, because of their evil practices. 3 Peradventure they will hear, and turn everyone from his evil way: then I will cease from the evils which I purpose to do to them, because of their evil practices.

4 And you shall say to them, Thus says Yahweh; If you won’t listen to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you,

4 And you shall say, Thus said the Lord; If you won’t listen to me, to walk in my statutes which I set before you, 4 And you shall say, Thus said the Lord; If you won’t listen to me, to walk in my statutes which I set before you,

5 To listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent to you, both rising up early, and sending them, but you haven’t listened;

5 to listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I send to you early in the morning; yes, I sent them, but you didn’t listen to me; 5 to listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I send to you early in the morning; yes, I sent them, but you didn’t listen to me;

6 Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.

6 καὶ δώσω τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον ὥσπερ Σηλὼμ καὶ τὴν πόλιν δώσω εἰς κατάραν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν πάσης τῆς γῆς. 6 καὶ δώσω τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον ὥσπερ Σηλὼ καὶ τὴν πόλιν δώσω εἰς κατάραν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσι πάσης τῆς γῆς.
6 then will I make this house as Selo, and I will make this city a curse to all the nations of all the earth. 6 then will I make this house as Selo, and I will make this city a curse to all the nations of all the earth.

7 So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of Yahweh.

7 And the priests, and the false prophets, and all the people heard Jeremias speaking these words in the house of the Lord. 7 And the priests, and the false prophets, and all the people heard Jeremias speaking these words in the house of the Lord.

8 Now it happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that Yahweh had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, You shall surely die.

8 And it happened, when Jeremias had ceased speaking all that the Lord had ordered him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the false prophets and all the people took him, saying, 8 And it happened, when Jeremias had ceased speaking all that the Lord had ordered him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the false prophets and all the people took him, saying,

9 Why have you prophesied in the name of Yahweh, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh.

9 You shall surely die, because you have prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, This house shall be as Selo, and this city shall be made completely destitute of inhabitants. And all the people assembled against Jeremias in the house of the Lord. 9 You shall surely die, because you have prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, This house shall be as Selo, and this city shall be made completely destitute of inhabitants. And all the people assembled against Jeremias in the house of the Lord.

10 When the princes of Judah heard these things, then they came up from the king’s house to the house of Yahweh, and sat down in the entry of the new gate of Yahweh’s house.

10 And the princes of Juda heard this word, and they went up out of the house of the king to the house of the Lord, and sat in the entrance of the new gate. 10 And the princes of Juda heard this word, and they went up out of the house of the king to the house of the Lord, and sat in the entrance of the new gate.

11 Then spoke the priests and the prophets to the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die; for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.

11 Then the priests and the false prophets said to the princes and to all the people, The judgment of death is due to this man; because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears. 11 Then the priests and the false prophets said to the princes and to all the people, The judgment of death is due to this man; because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.

12 Then spoke Jeremiah to all the princes and to all the people, saying, Yahweh sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard.

12 Then Jeremias spoke to the princes, and to all the people, saying, The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city, all the words which you have heard. 12 Then Jeremias spoke to the princes, and to all the people, saying, The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city, all the words which you have heard.

13 Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of Yahweh your Elohim; and Yahweh will repent him of the evil that he has pronounced against you.

13 And now amend your ways and your works, and listen to the voice of the Lord; and the Lord shall cease from the evils which he has pronounced against you. 13 And now amend your ways and your works, and listen to the voice of the Lord; and the Lord shall cease from the evils which he has pronounced against you.

14 As for me, behold, I am in your hand: do with me as seems good and meet to you.

14 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐν χερσὶν ὑμῶν· ποιήσατέ μοι ὡς συμφέρει καὶ ὡς βέλτιον ὑμῖν. 14 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐν χερσὶν ὑμῶν· ποιήσατέ μοι ὡς συμφέρει καὶ ὡς βέλτιον ὑμῖν.
14 And behold, I am in your hands; do to me as is expedient, and as it is best for you. 14 And behold, I am in your hands; do to me as is expedient, and as it is best for you.

15 But know for certain, that if you put me to death, you shall surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on the inhabitants of it; for of a truth Yahweh has sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.

15 But know for a certainty, that if you slay me, you bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on those who dwell in it; for in truth the Lord has sent me to you to speak in your ears all these words. 15 But know for a certainty, that if you slay me, you bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on those who dwell in it; for in truth the Lord has sent me to you to speak in your ears all these words.

16 Then said the princes and all the people to the priests and to the prophets; This man is not worthy to die; for he has spoken to us in the name of Yahweh our Elohim.

16 Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and to the false prophets; Judgment of death is not due to this man; for he has spoken to us in the name of our Lord God. 16 Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and to the false prophets; Judgment of death is not due to this man; for he has spoken to us in the name of our Lord God.

17 Then rose up certain of the elders of the land, and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying,

17 καὶ ἀνέστησαν ἄνδρες τῶν πρεσβυτέρων τῆς γῆς καὶ εἶπαν πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ τοῦ λαοῦ 17 καὶ ἀνέστησαν ἄνδρες τῶν πρεσβυτέρων τῆς γῆς καὶ εἶπαν πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ τοῦ λαοῦ·
17 And there rose up men of the elders of the land, and said to all the assembly of the people, 17 And there rose up men of the elders of the land, and said to all the assembly of the people,

18 Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus says Yahweh of armies; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountains of the house as the high places of a forest.

18 Michaeas the Morathite lived in the days of Ezekias king of Juda, and said to all the people of Juda, Thus says the Lord; Sion shall be ploughed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become a desolation, and the mountain of the house shall be a thicket of trees. 18 Michaeas the Morathite lived in the days of Ezekias king of Juda, and said to all the people of Juda, Thus says the Lord; Sion shall be ploughed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become a desolation, and the mountain of the house shall be a thicket of trees.

19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? Did he not fear Yahweh, and besought Yahweh, and Yahweh repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we procure great evil against our souls.

19 μὴ ἀνελὼν ἀνεῖλεν αὐτὸν Ἐζεκίας καὶ πᾶς Ἰούδα;
οὐχὶ ὅτι ἐφοβήθησαν τὸν κύριον καὶ ὅτι ἐδεήθησαν τοῦ προσώπου κυρίου, καὶ ἐπαύσατο κύριος ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν, ὧν ἐλάλησεν ἐπ’ αὐτούς;
καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐποιήσαμεν κακὰ μεγάλα ἐπὶ ψυχὰς ἡμῶν.
19 μὴ ἀνελὼν ἀνεῖλεν αὐτὸν Ἐζεκίας καὶ πᾶς Ἰούδα;
οὐχ ὅτι ἐφοβήθησαν τὸν Κύριον καὶ ὅτι ἐδεήθησαν τοῦ προσώπου Κυρίου, καὶ ἐπαύσατο Κύριος ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν, ὧν ἐλάλησεν ἐπ’ αὐτούς;
καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐποιήσαμεν κακὰ μεγάλα ἐπὶ ψυχὰς ἡμῶν.
19 Did Ezekias and all Juda in any way slay him? Was it not that they feared the Lord, and they made supplication before the Lord, and the Lord ceased from the evils which he had pronounced against them? Whereas we have wrought great evil against our own souls. 19 Did Ezekias and all Juda in any way slay him? Was it not that they feared the Lord, and they made supplication before the Lord, and the Lord ceased from the evils which he had pronounced against them? Whereas we have wrought great evil against our own souls.

20 And there was also a man who prophesied in the name of Yahweh, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah.

20 And there was another man prophesying in the name of the Lord, Urias the son of Samaeas of Cariathiarim; and he prophesied concerning this land according to all the words of Jeremias. 20 And there was another man prophesying in the name of the Lord, Urias the son of Samaeas of Cariathiarim; and he prophesied concerning this land according to all the words of Jeremias.

21 And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt;

21 And king Joakim and all the princes heard all his words, and sought to slay him; and Urias heard it and went into Egypt. 21 And king Joakim and all the princes heard all his words, and sought to slay him; and Urias heard it and went into Egypt.

22 And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, namely, Elnathan the son of Achbor, and certain men with him into Egypt.

22 καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν βασιλεὺς ἄνδρας εἰς Αἴγυπτον, 22 καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν βασιλεὺς ἄνδρας εἰς Αἴγυπτον,
22 And the king sent men into Egypt; 22 And the king sent men into Egypt;

23 And they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him to Jehoiakim the king; who killed him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.

23 and they brought him from there, and brought him into the king; and he smote him with the sword, and cast him into the sepulchre of the children of his people. 23 and they brought him from there, and brought him into the king; and he smote him with the sword, and cast him into the sepulchre of the children of his people.

24 Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.

24 Nevertheless the hand of Achicam son of Saphan was with Jeremias, to prevent his being delivered into the hands of the people, or being killed. 24 Nevertheless the hand of Achicam son of Saphan was with Jeremias, to prevent his being delivered into the hands of the people, or being killed.
