Job Annoyed with Advice from His Friends

1 And Job answered and said,

1 And Job answered and said, 1 And Job answered and said,

2 No doubt but you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

2 So then you alone are men, and wisdom shall die with you? 2 So then you alone are men, and wisdom shall die with you?

3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yes, who doesn’t know such things as these?

3 But I also have a heart as well as you. 3 But I also have a heart as well as you.

4 I am as one mocked of his neighbour, who calls on God, and he answers him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn.

4 For a righteous and blameless man has become a subject for mockery. 4 For a righteous and blameless man has become a subject for mockery.

5 He who is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him who is at ease.

5 For it had been ordained that he should fall under others at the appointed time, and that his houses should be spoiled by transgressors: don’t let however anyone trust that, being evil, he shall be held guiltless, 5 For it had been ordained that he should fall under others at the appointed time, and that his houses should be spoiled by transgressors: don’t let however anyone trust that, being evil, he shall be held guiltless,

6 The tents of robbers prosper, and they who provoke God are secure; into whose hand God brings abundantly.

6 even as many as provoke the Lord, as if there were indeed to be no inquisition made of them. 6 even as many as provoke the Lord, as if there were indeed to be no inquisition made of them.

7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach you; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell you.

7 But ask now the beasts, if they may speak to you; and the birds of the air, if they may declare to you. 7 But ask now the beasts, if they may speak to you; and the birds of the air, if they may declare to you.

8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach you; and the fish of the sea shall declare to you.

8 Tell the earth, if it may speak to you; and the fish of the sea shall explain to you. 8 Tell the earth, if it may speak to you; and the fish of the sea shall explain to you.

9 Who doesn’t know in all these that the hand of Yahweh has wrought this?

9 τίς οὐκ ἔγνω ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις ὅτι χεὶρ κυρίου ἐποίησεν ταῦτα; 9 τίς οὖν οὐκ ἔγνω ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις ὅτι χεὶρ Κυρίου ἐποίησε ταῦτα;
9 Who then hasn’t known in all these things, that the hand of the Lord has made them? 9 Who then hasn’t known in all these things, that the hand of the Lord has made them?

10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

10 εἰ μὴ ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ ψυχὴ πάντων τῶν ζώντων καὶ πνεῦμα παντὸς ἀνθρώπου; 10 εἰ μὴ ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ ψυχὴ πάντων ζώντων καὶ πνεῦμα παντὸς ἀνθρώπου;
10 Whereas the life of all living things is in his hand, and the breath of every man. 10 Whereas the life of all living things is in his hand, and the breath of every man.

11 Doesn’t the ear try words? And the mouth taste his food?

11 For the ear tries words, and the palate tastes meats. 11 For the ear tries words, and the palate tastes meats.

12 With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.

12 In length of time is wisdom, and in long life knowledge. 12 In length of time is wisdom, and in long life knowledge.

Job Knows the Power of God

13 With him is wisdom and strength, he has counsel and understanding.

13 With him are wisdom and power, with him counsel and understanding. 13 With him are wisdom and power, with him counsel and understanding.

14 Behold, he breaks down, and it cannot be built again: he shuts up a man, and there can be no opening.

14 ἐὰν καταβάλῃ, τίς οἰκοδομήσει;
ἐὰν κλείσῃ κατὰ ἀνθρώπων, τίς ἀνοίξει;
14 ἐὰν καταβάλῃ, τίς οἰκοδομήσει;
ἐὰν κλείσῃ κατ’ ἀνθρώπων, τίς ἀνοίξει;
14 If he should cast down, who will build up? If he should shut up against man, who shall open? 14 If he should cast down, who will build up? If he should shut up against man, who shall open?

15 Behold, he withholds the waters, and they dry up: also he sends them out, and they overturn the earth.

15 If he should withhold the water, he will dry the earth; and if he should let it loose, he overthrows and destroys it. 15 If he should withhold the water, he will dry the earth; and if he should let it loose, he overthrows and destroys it.

16 With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.

16 With him are strength and power: he has knowledge and understanding. 16 With him are strength and power: he has knowledge and understanding.

17 He leads counsellers away spoiled, and makes the judges fools.

17 He leads counsellors away captive, and maddens the judges of the earth. 17 He leads counsellors away captive, and maddens the judges of the earth.

18 He looses the bond of kings, and girds their loins with a girdle.

18 He seats kings on thrones, and girds their loins with a girdle. 18 He seats kings on thrones, and girds their loins with a girdle.

19 He leads princes away spoiled, and overthrows the mighty.

19 He sends away priests into captivity, and overthrows the mighty ones of the earth. 19 He sends away priests into captivity, and overthrows the mighty ones of the earth.

20 He removes away the speech of the trusty, and takes away the understanding of the aged.

20 He changes the lips of the trusty, and he knows the understanding of the elders. 20 He changes the lips of the trusty, and he knows the understanding of the elders.

21 He pours contempt on princes, and weakens the strength of the mighty.

21 He pours dishonour on princes, and heals the lowly. 21 He pours dishonour on princes, and heals the lowly.

22 He discovers deep things out of darkness, and brings out to light the shadow of death.

22 Revealing deep things out of darkness; and he has brought into light the shadow of death. 22 Revealing deep things out of darkness; and he has brought into light the shadow of death.

23 He increases the nations, and destroys them: he enlarges the nations, and straitens them again.

23 Causing the nations to wander, and destroying them: overthrowing the nations, and leading them away. 23 Causing the nations to wander, and destroying them: overthrowing the nations, and leading them away.

24 He takes away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

24 Perplexing the minds of the princes of the earth; and he causes them to wander in a way, they haven’t known, saying, 24 Perplexing the minds of the princes of the earth; and he causes them to wander in a way, they haven’t known, saying,

25 They grope in the dark without light, and he makes them to stagger like a drunken man.

25 Let them grope in darkness, and let there be no light, and let them wander as a drunken man. 25 Let them grope in darkness, and let there be no light, and let them wander as a drunken man.
