Job

1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

וַיַּעַן צֹפַר הַנַּעֲמָתִי וַיֹּאמַר׃

1 ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Σωφὰρ ὁ Μιναῖος λέγει	1 ὑπολαβών δὲ Σωφὰρ ὁ Μιναῖος λέγει·

2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified?

הֲרֹב דְּבָרִים לֹא יֵעָנֶה וְאִם ־ אִישׁ שְׂפָתַיִם יִצְדָּק׃

2 ὁ τὰ πολλὰ λέγων καὶ ἀντακούσεται· ἢ καὶ ὁ εὔλαλος οἴεται εἶναι δίκαιος; εὐλογημένος γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος.	2 ὁ τὰ πολλὰ λέγων, καὶ ἀντακούσεται· ἢ καὶ ὁ εὔλαλος οἴεται εἶναι δίκαιος; εὐλογημένος γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος.

3 Should your lies make men hold their peace? And when you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

בַּדֶּיךָ מְתִים יַחֲרִישׁו וַתִּלְעַג וְאֵין מַכְלִם׃

5 But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against you;

וְאוּלָם מִי ־ יִתֵּן אֱלֹוהַּ דַּבֵּר וְיִפְתַּח שְׂפָתָיו עִמָּךְ׃

5 ἀλλὰ πῶς ἄν ὁ κύριος λαλήσαι πρὸς σέ; καὶ ἀνοίξει χείλη αὐτοῦ μετὰ σου.	5 ἀλλὰ πῶς ἄν ὁ Κύριος λαλήσαι πρός σε, καὶ ἀνοίξει χείλη αὐτοῦ μετὰ σοῦ;

6 And that he would show you the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to what is! Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

וְיַגֶּד ־ לְךָ תַּעֲלֻמֹות חָכְמָה כִּי ־ כִפְלַיִם לְתוּשִׁיָּה וְדַע כִּי ־ יַשֶּׁה לְךָ אֱלֹוהַ מֵעֲוֹנֶךָ׃

6 εἶτα ἀναγγελεῖ σοί δύναμιν σοφίας, ὅτι διπλοῦς ἔσται τῶν κατὰ σέ· καὶ τότε γνώσῃ ὅτι ἄξιά σοί ἀπέβη ἀπὸ κυρίου ὧν ἡμάρτηκας.	6 εἶτα ἀναγγελεῖ σοι δύναμιν σοφίας, ὅτι διπλοῦς ἔσται τῶν κατά σέ· καὶ τότε γνώσῃ ὅτι ἄξιά σοι ἀπέβη ἀπὸ Κυρίου ὧν ἡμάρτηκας.

7 Can you by searching find out God? Can you find out the Almighty to perfection?

הַחֵקֶר אֱלֹוהַ תִּמְצָא אִם עַד ־ תַּכְלִית שַׁדַּי תִּמְצָא׃

7 ἦ ἴχνος κυρίου εὑρήσεις ἢ εἰς τὰ ἔσχατα ἀφίκου, ἃ ἐποίησεν ὁ παντοκράτωρ;	7 ἦ ἴχνος Κυρίου εὑρήσεις ἢ εἰς τὰ ἔσχατα ἀφίκου, ἃ ἐποίησεν ὁ Παντοκράτωρ;

8 It is as high as heaven; what can you do? Deeper than hell; what can you know?

גָּבְהֵי שָׁמַיִם מַה ־ תִּפְעָל עֲמֻקָּה מִשְּׁאֹול מַה ־ תֵּדָע׃

9 The measure of it is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

אֲרֻכָּה מֵאֶרֶץ מִדָּהּ וּרְחָבָה מִנִּי ־ יָם׃

10 If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

אִם ־ יַחֲלֹף וְיַסְגִּיר וְיַקְהִיל וּמִי יְשִׁיבֶנּוּ׃

11 For he knows vain men: he sees wickedness also; will he not then consider it?

וְאִישׁ נָבוּב יִלָּבֵב וְעַיִר פֶּרֶא אָדָם יִוָּלֵד׃

13 If you prepare your heart, and stretch out your hands toward him;

אִם ־ אַתָּה הֲכִינֹותָ לִבֶּךָ וּפָרַשְׂתָּ אֵלָיו כַּפֶּךָ׃

13 εἰ γὰρ σὺ καθαρὰν ἔθου τὴν καρδίαν σου, ὑπτιάζεις δὲ χεῖρας πρὸς αὐτόν,	13 εἰ γὰρ σὺ καθαρὰν ἔθου τὴν καρδίαν σου, ὑπτιάζεις δὲ χεῖρας πρὸς αὐτόν,

14 If iniquity be in your hand, put it far away, and don’t let wickedness dwell in your tents.

15 For then you shall lift up your face without spot; yes, you shall be steadfast, and shall not fear.

16 Because you shall forget your misery, and remember it as waters that pass away.

17 And your age shall be clearer than the noonday; you shall shine forth, you shall be as the morning.

וּמִצָּהֳרַיִם יָקוּם חָלֶד תָּעֻפָה כַּבֹּקֶר תִּהְיֶה׃

19 Also you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid; yes, many shall make suit to you.

וְרָבַצְתָּ וְאֵין מַחֲרִיד וְחִלּוּ פָנֶיךָ רַבִּים׃

וְעֵינֵי רְשָׁעִים תִּכְלֶינָה וּמָנֹוס אָבַד מִנְהֶם וְתִקְוָתָם מַפַּח ־ נָפֶשׁ׃ פ
