Job Despairs of God’s Dealings

1 My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint on myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

1 Weary in my soul, I will pour my words with groans on him: I will speak being restricted in the bitterness of my soul. 1 Weary in my soul, I will pour my words with groans on him: I will speak being restricted in the bitterness of my soul.

2 I will say to God, Do not condemn me; show me therefore you contend with me.

2 καὶ ἐρῶ πρὸς κύριον μή με ἀσεβεῖν δίδασκε· καὶ διὰ τί με οὕτως ἔκρινας; 2 καὶ ἐρῶ πρὸς Κύριον· μή με ἀσεβεῖν δίδασκε· καὶ διατί με οὕτως ἔκρινας;
2 And I will say to the Lord, Do not teach me to be impious; and why have you thus judged me? 2 And I will say to the Lord, Do not teach me to be impious; and why have you thus judged me?

3 Is it good to you who you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and shine on the counsel of the wicked?

3 καλόν σοι, ἐὰν ἀδικήσω, ὅτι ἀπείπω ἔργα χειρῶν σου, βουλῇ δὲ ἀσεβῶν προσέσχες; 3 καλόν σοι, ἐὰν ἀδικήσω, ὅτι ἀπείπω ἔργα χειρῶν σου, βουλῇ δὲ ἀσεβῶν προσέσχες;
3 Is it good before you if I be unrighteous? For you have disowned the work of your hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly. 3 Is it good before you if I be unrighteous? For you have disowned the work of your hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly.

4 Have you eyes of flesh? Or see you as man sees?

4 ὥσπερ βροτὸς ὁρᾷ καθορᾷς καθὼς ὁρᾷ ἄνθρωπος βλέψῃ; 4 ὥσπερ βροτὸς ὁρᾷ καθορᾷς καθὼς ὁρᾷ ἄνθρωπος βλέψῃ;
4 Or do you see as a mortal sees? Or will you look as a man sees? 4 Or do you see as a mortal sees? Or will you look as a man sees?

5 Are your days as the days of man? Are your years as man’s days,

5 βίος σου ἀνθρώπινός ἐστιν τὰ ἔτη σου ἀνδρός; 5 βίος σου ἀνθρώπινός ἐστιν τὰ ἔτη σου ἀνδρός;
5 Or is your life human, or your years the years of a man, 5 Or is your life human, or your years the years of a man,

6 That you inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin?

6 ὅτι ἀνεζήτησας τὴν ἀνομίαν μου καὶ τὰς ἁμαρτίας μου ἐξιχνίασας. 6 ὅτι ἀνεζήτησας τὴν ἀνομίαν μου καὶ τὰς ἁμαρτίας μου ἐξιχνίασας;
6 that you have inquired into my iniquity, and searched out my sins? 6 that you have inquired into my iniquity, and searched out my sins?

7 You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand.

7 οἶδας γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἠσέβησα· ἀλλὰ τίς ἐστιν ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν σου ἐξαιρούμενος; 7 οἶδας γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἠσέβησα· ἀλλὰ τίς ἐστιν ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν σου ἐξαιρούμενος;
7 For you know that I haven’t committed iniquity; but who is he who can deliver out of your hands? 7 For you know that I haven’t committed iniquity; but who is he who can deliver out of your hands?

8 Your hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet you do destroy me.

8 Your hands have formed me and made me; afterwards you did change your mind, and smite me. 8 Your hands have formed me and made me; afterwards you did change your mind, and smite me.

9 Remember, I beseech you, that you have made me as the clay; and will you bring me into dust again?

9 Remember that you have made me as clay, and you do turn me again to earth. 9 Remember that you have made me as clay, and you do turn me again to earth.

10 Have you not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?

10 οὐχ ὥσπερ γάλα με ἤμελξας, ἐτύρωσας δέ με ἴσα τυρῷ; 10 οὐχ ὥσπερ γάλα με ἤμελξας, ἐτύρωσας δέ με ἴσα τυρῷ;
10 Have you not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese? 10 Have you not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese?

11 You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and have fenced me with bones and sinews.

11 And you did clothe me with skin and flesh, and frame me with bones and sinews. 11 And you did clothe me with skin and flesh, and frame me with bones and sinews.

12 You have granted me life and favour, and your visitation has preserved my spirit.

12 And you did bestow on me life and mercy, and your oversight has preserved my spirit. 12 And you did bestow on me life and mercy, and your oversight has preserved my spirit.

13 And these things have you hid in your heart: I know that this is with you.

13 Having these things in yourself, I know that you canst do all things; for nothing is impossible with you. 13 Having these things in yourself, I know that you canst do all things; for nothing is impossible with you.

14 If I sin, then you mark me, and you won’t acquit me from my iniquity.

14 And if I should sin, you watch me; and you haven’t cleared me from iniquity. 14 And if I should sin, you watch me; and you haven’t cleared me from iniquity.

15 If I be wicked, woe to me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see you my affliction;

15 Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me; and if I should be righteous, I cannot lift myself up, for I am full of dishonour. 15 Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me; and if I should be righteous, I cannot lift myself up, for I am full of dishonour.

16 For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion; and again you show yourself marvellous on me.

16 For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again you have changed and are terribly destroying me; 16 For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again you have changed and are terribly destroying me;

17 You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me; changes and war are against me.

17 renewing against me my torture; and you have dealt with me in great anger, and you have brought trials on me. 17 renewing against me my torture; and you have dealt with me in great anger, and you have brought trials on me.

18 Why then have you brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the spirit, and no eye had seen me!

18 Why then did you bring me out of the womb? And why did I not die, and no eye see me, 18 Why then did you bring me out of the womb? And why did I not die, and no eye see me,

19 I should have been as though I hadn’t been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

19 καὶ ὥσπερ οὐκ ὢν ἐγενόμην;
διὰ τί γὰρ ἐκ γαστρὸς εἰς μνῆμα οὐκ ἀπηλλάγην;
19 καὶ ὥσπερ οὐκ ὢν ἐγενόμην;
διατί γὰρ ἐκ γαστρὸς εἰς μνῆμα οὐκ ἀπηλλάγην;
19 and I become as if I hadn’t been? For why was I not carried from the womb to the grave? 19 and I become as if I hadn’t been? For why was I not carried from the womb to the grave?

20 Are not my days few? Cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

20 οὐκ ὀλίγος ἐστὶν χρόνος τοῦ βίου μου;
20 οὐκ ὀλίγος ἐστὶν χρόνος τοῦ βίου μου;
20 Is not the time of my life short? Suffer me to rest a little, 20 Is not the time of my life short? Suffer me to rest a little,

21 Before I go from where I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;

21 before I go from where I shall not return, to a land of darkness and gloominess; 21 before I go from where I shall not return, to a land of darkness and gloominess;

22 A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

22 to a land of perpetual darkness, where there is no light, neither can anyone see the life of mortals. 22 to a land of perpetual darkness, where there is no light, neither can anyone see the life of mortals.
