God Speaks of Nature and Its Beings
1 Know you the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? Or can you mark when the hinds do calve?
1 Say if you know the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and if you have marked the calving of the hinds. | 1 Say if you know the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and if you have marked the calving of the hinds. |
2 Can you number the months that they fulfill? Or do you know the time when they bring forth?
2 and if you have have numbered the full months of their being with young, and if you have relieved their pangs. | 2 and if you have have numbered the full months of their being with young, and if you have relieved their pangs. |
3 They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.

3 and have reared their young without fear; and will you loosen their pangs? | 3 and have reared their young without fear; and will you loosen their pangs? |
4 Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with grain; they go forth, and return not to them.
4 Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: their young will go forth, and won’t return to them. | 4 Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: their young will go forth, and won’t return to them. |
5 Who has sent out the wild donkey free? Or who has loosed the bands of the wild donkey?
5 And who is he who sent forth the wild donkey free? And who loosed his bands? | 5 And who is he who sent forth the wild donkey free? And who loosed his bands? |
6 Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
6 whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts. | 6 whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts. |
7 He scorns the multitude of the city, neither regards he the crying of the driver.
7 He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and doesn’t hear the chiding of the tax-gatherer. | 7 He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and doesn’t hear the chiding of the tax-gatherer. |
8 The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing.
8 He will survey the mountains as his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing. | 8 He will survey the mountains as his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing. |
9 Will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or abide by your crib?
9 And will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or to lie down at your manger? | 9 And will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or to lie down at your manger? |
10 Can you bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? Or will he harrow the valleys after you?
10 And will you bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plough furrows for you in the plain? | 10 And will you bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plough furrows for you in the plain? |
11 Will you trust him, because his strength is great? Or will you leave your labour to him?
11 And do you trust him, because his strength is great? And will you commit your works to him? | 11 And do you trust him, because his strength is great? And will you commit your works to him? |
12 Will you believe him, that he will bring home your seed, and gather it into your barn?
12 And will you believe that he will return to you your seed, and bring it in to your threshing floor? | 12 And will you believe that he will return to you your seed, and bring it in to your threshing floor? |
13 Gavest you the good wings to the peacocks? Or wings and feathers to the ostrich?
13 The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, it is worthy of notice, | 13 The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, it is worthy of notice, |
14 Which leaves her eggs in the earth, and warms them in dust,
14 for the ostrich will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust, | 14 for the ostrich will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust, |
15 And forgets that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
15 and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them. | 15 and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them. |
16 She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
16 She has hardened herself against her young ones, as though she bereaved not herself: she labours in vain without fear. | 16 She has hardened herself against her young ones, as though she bereaved not herself: she labours in vain without fear. |
17 Because God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has he imparted to her understanding.
17 For God has withheld wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding. | 17 For God has withheld wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding. |
18 What time she lifts up herself on high, she scorns the horse and his rider.
18 In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider. | 18 In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider. |
19 Have you given the horse strength? Have you clothed his neck with thunder?
19 Have you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror? | 19 Have you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror? |
20 Can you make him afraid as a grasshopper? The glory of his nostrils is terrible.
20 And have you clad him in perfect armour, and made his breast glorious with courage? | 20 And have you clad him in perfect armour, and made his breast glorious with courage? |
21 He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength: he goes on to meet the armed men.
21 He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain. | 21 He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain. |
22 He mocks at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turns he back from the sword.
22 He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword. | 22 He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword. |
23 The quiver rattles against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
23 The bow and sword resound against him; and his rage will swallow up the ground. | 23 The bow and sword resound against him; and his rage will swallow up the ground. |
24 He swallows the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believes he who it is the sound of the trumpet.
24 and he won’t believe until the trumpet sounds. | 24 and he won’t believe until the trumpet sounds. |
25 He says among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smells the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
25 And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing. | 25 And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing. |
26 Doth the hawk fly by your wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
26 And does the hawk remain steady by your wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south? | 26 And does the hawk remain steady by your wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south? |
27 Doth the eagle mount up at your command, and make her nest on high?
27 And does the eagle rise at your command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest, | 27 And does the eagle rise at your command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest, |
28 She dwells and abides on the rock, on the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
28 on a crag of a rock, and in a secret place? | 28 on a crag of a rock, and in a secret place? |
29 From from there she seeks the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
29 Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far. | 29 Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far. |
30 Her young ones also suck up blood; and where the slain are, there is she.
30 And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found. | 30 And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found. |
