Jonah

1 Now the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare of it, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

4 But Yahweh sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his god, and cast forth the products that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

Ἰωνᾶς δὲ κατέβη εἰς τὴν κοίλην τοῦ πλοίου καὶ ἐκάθευδε καὶ ἔρεγχε
5 And the sailors were afraid, and each called to their god and threw out into the sea the cargo that was in the ship, to be lightened from them that it might be lightened of them. 6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, What mean you, Oh sleeper? Arise, call on your God, perhaps that God will think on us, that we perish not.

6 καὶ προσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ πρωρεὺς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί σὺ ῥέγχεις; ἀνάστα καὶ ἐπικαλοῦ τὸν θεόν σου, ὅπως διασώσῃ ὁ θεὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα.	6 καὶ προσῆλθε πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ πρωρεὺς καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· τί σὺ ῥέγχεις; ἀνάστα καὶ ἐπικαλοῦ τὸν Θεόν σου, ὅπως διασώσῃ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα.

7 And they said everyone to his fellow, Come, and let’s cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is on us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

7 καὶ εἶπεν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ δεῦτε βάλωμεν κλήρους καὶ ἐπιγνῶμεν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν. καὶ ἔβαλον κλήρους, καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος ἐπὶ Ἰωνᾶν.	7 καὶ εἶπε ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ· δεῦτε βάλωμεν κλήρους καὶ ἐπιγνῶμεν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν; καὶ ἔβαλον κλήρους, καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος ἐπὶ Ἰωνᾶν.

8 Then said they to him, Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us; What is your occupation? And from where do you come? What is your country? And of what people are you?

8 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν Ἀπάγγειλον ἡμῖν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν. τίς σου ἡ ἐργασία ἐστίν; καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ, καὶ ἐκ ποίας χώρας καὶ ἐκ ποίου λαοῦ εἶ σύ;	8 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· ἀπάγγειλον ἡμῖν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν; τίς σου ἡ ἐργασία ἐστί; καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ, καὶ τοῦ πορεύῃ, καὶ ἐκ ποίας χώρας καὶ ἐκ ποίου λαοῦ εἶ σύ;
8 And they said to him, “Tell us, what is the reason for the evil on us. What is your occupation? 9 And he said to them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, which has made the sea and the dry land.

9 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Δοῦλος κυρίου ἐγώ εἰμι καὶ τὸν κύριον θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐγὼ σέβομαι, ὃς ἐποίησεν τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηράν.	9 καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· δοῦλος Κυρίου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ καὶ τὸν Κύριον Θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐγὼ σέβομαι, ὃς ἐποίησε τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηράν.

10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, Why have you done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

11 Then said they to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us? For the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

12 And he said to them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm to you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is on you.

12 καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωνᾶς πρὸς αὐτούς Ἄρατέ με καὶ ἐμβάλετέ με εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ κοπάσει ἡ θάλασσα ἀφ’ ὑμῶν· διότι ἔγνωκα ἐγὼ ὅτι δι’ ἐμὲ ὁ κλύδων ὁ μέγας οὗτος ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἐστιν.	12 καὶ εἶπε Ἰωνᾶς πρὸς αὐτούς· ἄρατέ με καὶ ἐμβάλετέ με εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ κοπάσει ἡ θάλασσα ἀφ’ ὑμῶν· διότι ἔγνωκα ἐγὼ ὅτι δι’ ἐμὲ ὁ κλύδων ὁ μέγας οὗτος ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἔστι.

13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not; for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

14 Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, We beseech you, Oh Yahweh, we beseech you, let’s not perish for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Oh Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.

14 καὶ ἀνεβόησαν πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπαν Μηδαμῶς, κύριε, μὴ ἀπολώμεθα ἕνεκεν τῆς ψυχῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου, καὶ μὴ δῷς ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς αἷμα δίκαιον, ὅτι σύ κύριε, ὃν τρόπον ἐβούλου πεποίηκας.	14 καὶ ἀνεβόησαν πρὸς Κύριον καὶ εἶπαν· μηδαμῶς, Κύριε, μὴ ἀπολώμεθα ἕνεκεν τῆς ψυχῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου, καὶ μὴ δῷς ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς αἷμα δίκαιον, διότι σύ, Κύριε, ὃν τρόπον ἐβούλου, πεποίηκας.
14 And they shouted to the Lord, and said, “Not so, Lord. let’s not perish for the sake of this man’s life, and don’t put righteous blood on us for you, Lord. 15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from her raging.

16 Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows.

17 [LM 2:1] Now Yahweh had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
