Jonah’s Disobedience

1 Now the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jōnas the son of Amathi, saying, 1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jōnas the son of Amathi, saying,

2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

2 “Rise, and go to Ninevē, the great city, and preach in it; for the cry of its wickedness is come up to me.” 2 “Rise, and go to Ninevē, the great city, and preach in it; for the cry of its wickedness is come up to me.”

3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare of it, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

3 But Jōnas rose up to flee to Tharsis from the presence of the Lord. And he went down to Joppē, and found a ship sailing to Tharsis. and he paid his fare, and got into it, to sail with them to Tharsis out of the presence of the Lord. 3 But Jōnas rose up to flee to Tharsis from the presence of the Lord. And he went down to Joppē, and found a ship sailing to Tharsis. and he paid his fare, and got into it, to sail with them to Tharsis out of the presence of the Lord.

4 But Yahweh sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

4 And the Lord stirred up a wind on the sea; and there was a great wave on the sea, and the ship was in danger of being crushed. 4 And the Lord stirred up a wind on the sea; and there was a great wave on the sea, and the ship was in danger of being crushed.

5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his god, and cast forth the products that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

5 And the sailors were afraid, and each called to their god and threw out into the sea the cargo that was in the ship, to be lightened from them that it might be lightened of them. But Jōnas went down into the hold of the ship, and was sleeping, and snored. 5 And the sailors were afraid, and each called to their god and threw out into the sea the cargo that was in the ship, to be lightened from them that it might be lightened of them. But Jōnas went down into the hold of the ship, and was sleeping, and snored.

6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, What mean you, Oh sleeper? Arise, call on your God, perhaps that God will think on us, that we perish not.

6 καὶ προσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν πρωρεὺς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί σὺ ῥέγχεις;

6 καὶ προσῆλθε πρὸς αὐτὸν πρωρεὺς καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· τί σὺ ῥέγχεις;

6 And the captain came to him, and said to him, “Why are you snoring? arise, and call on your God, so that God may deliver us, and we might not perish.” 6 And the captain came to him, and said to him, “Why are you snoring? arise, and call on your God, so that God may deliver us, and we might not perish.”

7 And they said everyone to his fellow, Come, and let’s cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is on us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

7 καὶ εἶπε ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ· δεῦτε βάλωμεν κλήρους καὶ ἐπιγνῶμεν τίνος ἕνεκεν κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν;

7 And each man said to his neighbour, “Come, let’s cast lots, and find out for whose sake this evil is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jōnas. 7 And each man said to his neighbour, “Come, let’s cast lots, and find out for whose sake this evil is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jōnas.

8 Then said they to him, Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us; What is your occupation? And from where do you come? What is your country? And of what people are you?

τίς σου ἐργασία ἐστίν;

καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ, καὶ ἐκ ποίας χώρας καὶ ἐκ ποίου λαοῦ εἶ σύ;
8 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· ἀπάγγειλον ἡμῖν τίνος ἕνεκεν κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν;

τίς σου ἐργασία ἐστί;

καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ, καὶ τοῦ πορεύῃ, καὶ ἐκ ποίας χώρας καὶ ἐκ ποίου λαοῦ εἶ σύ;
8 And they said to him, “Tell us, what is the reason for the evil on us. What is your occupation? And from where do you come, and of what country and from what people are you?” 8 And they said to him, “Tell us, what is the reason for the evil on us. What is your occupation? And from where do you come, and and where are you going, of what country and from what people are you?”

9 And he said to them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, which has made the sea and the dry land.

9 And he said to them, “I am a servant of the Lord; and I worship the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea, and the dry land.” 9 And he said to them, “I am a servant of the Lord; and I worship the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea, and the dry land.”

10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, Why have you done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

10 καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβον μέγαν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας;

10 καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβον μέγαν καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας;

10 Then the men were afraid with great fear, and said to him,“What is this that you have done?” because the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, because he told them. 10 Then the men were afraid with great fear, and said to him,“What is this that you have done?” because the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, because he told them.

11 Then said they to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us? For the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

11 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Τί σοί ποιήσωμεν καὶ κοπάσει θάλασσα ἀφ’ ἡμῶν;

11 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· τί ποιήσομέν σοι καὶ κοπάσει θάλασσα ἀφ’ ἡμῶν;

11 And they said to him,“What should we do to you, that the sea may be calm for us?” because the sea kept coming and raising waves more. 11 And they said to him,“What should we do to you, that the sea may be calm for us?” because the sea kept coming and raising waves more.

12 And he said to them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm to you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is on you.

12 And Jōnas said to them,“Lift me and throw me into the sea and the sea will be calm for you; because I know that because of me this great wave is on you.” 12 And Jōnas said to them,“Lift me and throw me into the sea and the sea will be calm for you; because I know that because of me this great wave is on you.”

13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not; for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

13 And the men tried hard to return to the land, and were not able. because the sea kept going and kept rising against them. 13 And the men tried hard to return to the land, and were not able. because the sea kept going and kept rising against them.

14 Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, We beseech you, Oh Yahweh, we beseech you, let’s not perish for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Oh Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.

14 And they shouted to the Lord, and said, “Not so, Lord. let’s not perish for the sake of this man’s life, and don’t put righteous blood on us for you, Lord. You have done the way you wanted.” 14 And they shouted to the Lord, and said, “Not so, Lord. let’s not perish for the sake of this man’s life, and don’t put righteous blood on us for you, Lord. You have done the way you wanted.”

15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from her raging.

15 So they took Jōnas, and threw him out into the sea; and the sea stopped from its wave. 15 So they took Jōnas, and threw him out into the sea; and the sea stopped from its wave.

16 Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows.

16 And the men were afraid with great fear of the Lord, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord, and they vowed vows. 16 And the men were afraid with great fear of the Lord, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord, and he vowed vows.

17 [LM 2:1] Now Yahweh had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

17 [LM 2:1] Now the Lord had commanded a great sea monster to swallow Jōnas. and Jōnas was in the belly of the sea monster three days and three nights. 17 [LM 2:1] Now the Lord had commanded a great sea monster to swallow Jōnas. and Jōnas was in the belly of the sea monster three days and three nights.
