Edom will be Humbled

1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says Adonai Yahweh concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from Yahweh, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise, and let’s rise up against her in battle.

1 The vision of Abdias. This is what the Lord God says to Idumea: I heard a report from the Lord, and he sent the content to the nations: “Rise up, and let us rise up against her for battle!” 1 The vision of Obdias. This is what the Lord God says to Idumea: I heard a report from the Lord, and he sent the content to the nations: “Rise up, and let us rise up against her for battle!”

2 Behold, I have made you small among the heathen: you are greatly despised.

2 Look! I have made you least among the nations; you are very much dishonored. 2 Look! I have made you least among the nations; you are very much dishonored.

3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; who says in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

3 ὑπερηφανία τῆς καρδίας σου ἐπῆρέν σὲ κατασκηνοῦντα ἐν ταῖς ὀπαῖς τῶν πετρῶν, ὑψῶν κατοικίαν αὐτοῦ λέγων ἐν καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ Τίς με κατάξει ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν; 3 ὑπερηφανία τῆς καρδίας σου ἐπῇρέ σε κατασκηνοῦντα ἐν ταῖς ὀπαῖς τῶν πετρῶν, ὑψῶν κατοικίαν αὐτοῦ, λέγων ἐν καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ· τίς κατάξει με ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν;
3 The arrogance of your heart has raised you up, though you camp in the holes of the rocks, exalting his habitation, saying in his heart, “Who will bring me down on the ground?” 3 The arrogance of your heart has raised you up, though you camp in the holes of the rocks, exalting his habitation, saying in his heart, “Who will bring me down on the ground?”

4 Though you exalt yourself as the eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, from there will I bring you down, says Yahweh.

4 If you soar aloft like an eagle, even if you set your nest in the middle of the stars, from there I will bring you down, says the Lord. 4 If you soar aloft like an eagle, even if you set your nest in the middle of the stars, from there I will bring you down, says the Lord.

5 If thieves came to you, if robbers by night, (how are you cut off!) would they not have stolen until they had enough? If the grapegatherers came to you, would they not leave some grapes?

5 εἰ κλέπται εἰσῆλθον πρὸς σὲ λῃσταὶ νυκτός, ποῦ ἄν ἀπερρίφης;
οὐκ ἄν ἔκλεψαν τὰ ἱκανὰ ἑαυτοῖς;
καὶ εἰ τρυγηταὶ εἰσῆλθον πρὸς σέ, οὐκ ἄν ὑπελίποντο ἐπιφυλλίδα;
5 εἰ κλέπται εἰσῆλθον πρός σε λῃσταὶ νυκτός, ποῦ ἄν ἀπερρίφης;
οὐκ ἄν ἔκλεψαν τὰ ἱκανὰ ἑαυτοῖς;
καὶ εἰ τρυγηταὶ εἰσῆλθον πρὸς σέ, οὐκ ἄν ὑπελίποντο ἐπιφυλλίδα;
5 If thieves came to you, or robbers by night, where would you be thrown aside; wouldn’t they steal what is sufficient for themselves? And if grape gatherers came to you, wouldn’t they leave gleanings? 5 If thieves came to you, or robbers by night, where would you be thrown aside; wouldn’t they steal what is sufficient for themselves? And if grape gatherers came to you, wouldn’t they leave gleanings?

6 How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!

6 πῶς ἐξηρευνήθη Ἡσαῦ καὶ κατελήμφθη αὐτοῦ τὰ κεκρυμμένα. 6 πῶς ἐξηρευνήθη Ἡσαῦ καὶ κατελήφθη τὰ κεκρυμμένα αὐτοῦ;
6 How Ēsau was searched, and his hidden things seized! 6 How Ēsau was searched, and his hidden things seized!

7 All the men of your confederacy have brought you even to the border: the men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you; they who eat your bread have laid a wound under you: there is no understanding in him.

7 All the men of your covenant have sent you as far as your borders; they resist you; your men of peace have prevailed against you; they have set an ambush beneath you. There is no understanding in them. 7 All the men of your covenant have sent you as far as the borders; they resist you; your men of peace have prevailed against you; they have set an ambush beneath you. There is no understanding in them.

8 Shall I not in that day, says Yahweh, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

8 On that day, says the Lord, I will destroy the wise out of Idumea and understanding out of Mount Ēsau. 8 On that day, says the Lord, I will destroy the wise out of Idumea and understanding out of Mount Ēsau.

9 And your mighty men, Oh Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that everyone of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

9 And your fighters from Thaiman shall be terrified so that a man will be removed from Mount Ēsau. 9 And your fighters from Thaiman shall be terrified so that a man will be removed from Mount Ēsau.

10 For your violence against your brother Jacōb shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off for ever.

10 Because of the slaughter and ungodliness against your brother Jacōb, shame shall also cover you, and you shall be removed forever. 10 Because of the slaughter and ungodliness against your brother Jacōb, shame shall also cover you, and you shall be removed forever.

11 In the day that you stood on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots on Jerusalem, even you were as one of them.

11 Since the day you stood in opposition, on the day that foreigners took captive his force and foreigners entered his gate and cast lots for Jerousalēm, you too were like one of them. 11 Since the day you stood in opposition, on the day that foreigners took captive his force and foreigners entered his gate and cast lots for Jerousalēm, you too were like one of them.

12 But you should not have looked on the day of your brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

12 And don’t look on a day of your brother, on the day of foreigners, and don’t rejoice over the sons of Joudas on the day of their ruin, and don’t boast on the day of affliction. 12 And don’t look on a day of your brother, on the day of foreigners, and don’t rejoice over the sons of Joudas on the day of their ruin, and don’t boast on the day of affliction.

13 You should not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yes, you should not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

13 Don’t even start to enter the gates of the peoples on the day of their suffering, don’t start to look, even you, on their gathering on the day of their ruin, don’t start to join in an attack on their force on the day of their destruction. 13 Don’t even start to enter the gates of the peoples on the day of their suffering, don’t start to look, even you, on their gathering on the day of their ruin, don’t start to join in an attack on their force on the day of their destruction.

14 Neither should you have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that escaped; neither should you have delivered up those of his who remained in the day of distress.

14 Don’t even start to stand at their mountain passes, to destroy those of them who escaped nor hem in those among them who are attempting to flee on the day of affliction. 14 Don’t even start to stand at their mountain passes, to destroy those of them who escaped nor hem in those among them who are attempting to flee on the day of affliction.

The Day of Yahweh and the Future

15 For the day of Yahweh is near on all the heathen: as you have done, it shall be done to you: your reward shall return on your own head.

15 For the day of the Lord against all the nations is near. As you have done, so shall it be to you; your recompense shall be returned on your head. 15 For the day of the Lord against all the nations is near. As you have done, so shall it be to you; your recompense shall be returned on your head.

16 For as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yes, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.

16 Because as you have drunk on my holy mountain, all the nations shall drink wine; they shall drink and descend and be as though they didn’t exist. 16 Because as you have drunk on my holy mountain, all the nations shall drink wine; they shall drink and descend and be as though they didn’t exist.

17 But on mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacōb shall possess their possessions.

17 But on Mount Siōn there shall be salvation, and it shall be holy, and the house of Jacōb shall take possession of those who took possession of them. 17 But on Mount Siōn there shall be salvation, and it shall be holy, and the house of Jacōb shall take possession of those who took possession of them.

18 And the house of Jacōb shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for Yahweh has spoken it.

18 And the house of Jacōb shall be a fire, the house of Jōsēph a flame, the house of Ēsau stubble, and they shall be inflamed against them and consume them, and there shall be no fire bearer for the house of Ēsau, because the Lord has spoken. 18 And the house of Jacōb shall be a fire, the house of Jōsēph a flame, the house of Ēsau stubble, and they shall be inflamed against them and consume them, and there shall be no fire bearer for the house of Ēsau, because the Lord has spoken.

19 And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines; and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria; and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

19 And those in Nageb shall possess Mount Ēsau, and those in the Sephēla the Philistines, and they shall possess Mount Ephraim and the plain of Samaria and Benjamin and Galaaditis. 19 And those in Nageb shall possess Mount Ēsau, and those in the Sephēla the Philistines, and they shall possess Mount Ephraim and the plain of Samaria and Benjamin and Galaaditis.

20 And the captivity of this army of the sons of Israēl shall possess that of the Canaanites, even to Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

20 And this is the beginning of the migration; the sons of Israēl shall have the land of the Chananites as far as Sarepta and the migration of Jerousalēm as far as Ephratha; they shall also possess the cities of the Nageb. 20 And this is the beginning of the migration; the sons of Israēl shall have the land of the Chananites as far as Sarepta and the migration of Jerousalēm as far as Ephratha; they shall also possess the cities of the Nageb.

21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be Yahweh’s.

21 The men who are rescued from Mount Siōn shall go up to punish Mount Ēsau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s. 21 The men who are rescued from Mount Siōn shall go up to punish Mount Ēsau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.
