The Shekinah Glory
1 Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of Yahweh filled the house.
1 And when Salōmōn had finished praying, then the fire came down from heaven, and devoured the whole-burnt-offerings and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. | 1 And when Salōmōn had finished praying, then the fire came down from heaven, and devoured the whole-burnt-offerings and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. |
2 And the priests couldn’t enter into the house of Yahweh, because the glory of Yahweh had filled Yahweh’s house.
2 And the priests couldn’t enter into the house of the Lord at that time, for the glory of the Lord filled the house. | 2 And the priests couldn’t enter into the house of the Lord at that time, for the glory of the Lord filled the house. |
3 And when all the sons of Israēl saw how the fire came down, and the glory of Yahweh on the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground on the pavement, and worshipped, and praised Yahweh, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endures forever.
3 And all the sons of Israēl saw the fire descending, and the glory of the Lord was on the house; and they fell on their face to the ground on the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the Lord; for it is good to do so, because his mercy endures forever. | 3 And all the sons of Israēl saw the fire descending, and the glory of the Lord was on the house; and they fell on their face to the ground on the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the Lord; for it is good to do so, because his mercy endures forever. |
Sacrifices Offered
4 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before Yahweh.
4 And the king and all the people were offering sacrifices before the Lord. | 4 And the king and all the people were offering sacrifices before the Lord. |
5 And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of 20 and 2000 oxen, and 100 and 20,000 sheep; so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.
5 And king Salōmōn offered a sacrifice of calves 22,000, of sheep 100 and 20,000; so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God. | 5 And king Salōmōn offered a sacrifice of calves 22,000, of sheep 100 and 20,000; so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God. |
6 And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also with instruments of music of Yahweh, which David the king had made to praise Yahweh, because his mercy endures forever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israēl stood.
6 And the priests were standing at their watches, and the Levites with instruments of music of the Lord, belonging to king David, to give thanks before the Lord, for his mercy endures forever, with the hymns of David, by their ministry; and the priests were blowing the trumpets before them, and all Israēl standing. |
7 Moreover Solomon hallowed the middle of the court that was before the house of Yahweh; for there he offered burnt offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar which Solomon had made wasn’t able to receive the burnt offerings, and the food offerings, and the fat.
7 And Salōmōn consecrated the middle of the court that was in the house of the Lord; for he offered there the whole-burnt-offerings and the fat of the peace-offerings, for the copper-alloy altar which Salōmōn had made wasn’t sufficient to receive the whole-burnt-offerings, and the food-offerings, and the fat. |
The Feast of Dedication
8 Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven days, and all Israēl with him, a very great congregation, from the entering in of Hamath to the river of Egypt.
8 And Salōmōn kept the feast at that time seven days, and all Israēl with him, a very great assembly, from the entering in of Aimath, and as far as the river of Egypt. | 8 And Salōmōn kept the feast at that time seven days, and all Israēl with him, a very great assembly, from the entering in of Aimath, and as far as the river of Egypt. |
9 And in the eighth day they made a solemn assembly; for they kept the dedication of the altar seven days, and the feast seven days.
9 And on the eighth day he kept a solemn assembly; for he kept a feast of seven days as the dedication of the altar. | 9 And on the eighth day he kept a solemn assembly; for he kept a feast of seven days as the dedication of the altar. |
10 And on the 23rd day of the seventh month he sent the people away into their tents, glad and merry in heart for the goodness that Yahweh had showed to David, and to Solomon, and to Israēl his people.
10 And on the 23rd day of the seventh month he dismissed the people to their tents, rejoicing, and with a glad heart because of the good deeds which the Lord had done to David, and to Salōmōn, and to Israēl his people. | 10 And on the 23rd day of the seventh month he dismissed the people to their tents, rejoicing, and with a glad heart because of the good deeds which the Lord had done to David, and to Salōmōn, and to Israēl his people. |
God’s Promise and Warning
11 Thus Solomon finished the house of Yahweh, and the king’s house; and all that came into Solomon’s heart to make in the house of Yahweh, and in his own house, he prosperously effected.
11 So Salōmōn finished the house of the Lord, and the king’s house; and in whatever Salōmōn wished in his heart to do in the house of the Lord and in his own house, he prospered. | 11 So Salōmōn finished the house of the Lord, and the king’s house; and in whatever Salōmōn wished in his heart to do in the house of the Lord and in his own house, he prospered. |
12 And Yahweh appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him, I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for a house of sacrifice.
12 And the Lord appeared to Salōmōn by night, and said to him, I have heard your prayer, and I have chosen this place to myself for a house of sacrifice. | 12 And the Lord appeared to Salōmōn by night, and said to him, I have heard your prayer, and I have chosen this place to myself for a house of sacrifice. |
13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;
13 If I should restrain the heaven and there should be no rain, and if I should command the locust to devour the trees, and if I should send pestilence on my people; | 13 If I should restrain the heaven and there should be no rain, and if I should command the locust to devour the trees, and if I should send pestilence on my people; |
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
14 then if my people, on whom my name is called, should repent, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their evil ways, I also will hear from heaven, and I will be merciful to their sins, and I will heal their land. | 14 then if my people, on whom my name is called, should repent, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their evil ways, I also will hear from heaven, and I will be merciful to their sins, and I will heal their land. |
15 Now my eyes shall be open, and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.
15 And now my eyes shall be open, and my ears attentive to the prayer of this place. | 15 And now my eyes shall be open, and my ears attentive to the prayer of this place. |
16 For now have I chosen and consecrated this house, that my name may be there forever; and my eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.
16 And now I have chosen and consecrated this house, that my name should be there forever; and my eyes and my heart shall be there always. | 16 And now I have chosen and consecrated this house, that my name should be there forever; and my eyes and my heart shall be there always. |
17 And as for you, if you will walk before me, as David your father walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and shall observe my statues and my judgments;
17 And if you will walk before me as David your father did, and will do according to all that I have commanded you, and will keep my ordinances and my judgments; | 17 And if you will walk before me as David your father did, and will do according to all that I have commanded you, and will keep my ordinances and my judgments; |
18 Then will I establish the throne of your kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David your father, saying, There shall not fail you a man to be ruler in Israēl.
18 then will I establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, There shall not fail you a man ruling in Israēl. | 18 then will I establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, There shall not fail you a man ruling in Israēl. |
19 But if you turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;
19 But if you should turn away, and forsake my ordinances and my commandments, which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them; | 19 But if you should turn away, and forsake my ordinances and my commandments, which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them; |
20 Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have consecrated for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations.
20 then will I remove you from the land which I gave them; and this house which I have consecrated to my name I will remove out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a by-word among all nations. | 20 then will I remove you from the land which I gave them; and this house which I have consecrated to my name I will remove out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a by-word among all nations. |
21 And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to everyone who passes by it; so that he shall say, Why has Yahweh done thus to this land, and to this house?
21 And as for this lofty house, everyone who passes by it shall be amazed, and shall say, Why has the Lord done thus to this land, and to this house? | 21 And as for this lofty house, everyone who passes by it shall be amazed, and shall say, Why has the Lord done thus to this land, and to this house? |
22 And it shall be answered, Because they forsook Yahweh Elohim of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them; therefore has he brought all this evil on them.
22 And men shall say, Because they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they attached themselves to other gods, and worshipped them, and served them; and therefore he has brought on them all this evil. | 22 And men shall say, Because they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they attached themselves to other gods, and worshipped them, and served them; and therefore he has brought on them all this evil. |
