Chapter 5

AlexandrinusVaticanus

The Torment of Separation

1 I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, Oh friends; drink, yes, drink abundantly, Oh beloved.

1 I came into my garden, my sister, my bride, to harvest my myrrh with my spices, I ate my bread with my honey; I drank my wine with my milk.
Eat, neighbours; and drink and be drunk, brothers.
1 I came into my garden, my sister, my bride, to harvest my myrrh with my spices, I ate my bread with my honey; I drank my wine with my milk.
Eat, neighbours; and drink and be drunk, brothers.

2 I sleep, but my heart awakens: it is the voice of my beloved that knocks, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled; for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.

2 I sleep, but my heart keeps awake; the voice of my dear relative keeps knocking at the door,
Open to me, my dear one, my sister, my near one, my dove, my perfect one; because my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.
2 I sleep, but my heart keeps awake; the voice of my dear relative keeps knocking at the door,
Open to me, my dear one, my sister, my near one, my dove, my perfect one; because my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.

3 I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?

3 ἐξεδυσάμην τὸν χιτῶνά μου, πῶς ἐνδύσωμαι αὐτόν;
ἐνιψάμην τοὺς πόδας μου, πῶς μολυνῶ αὐτούς;
3 Ἐξεδυσάμην τὸν χιτῶνά μου, πῶς ἐνδύσομαι αὐτόν;
ἐνιψάμην τοὺς πόδας μου, πῶς μολυνῶ αὐτούς;
3 I removed my tunic, how could I put it on? I have washed my feet, how could I dirty them? 3 I removed my tunic, how could I put it on? I have washed my feet, how could I dirty them?

4 My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.

4 My dear relative sent his hand from the opening, and my belly stirred for him. 4 My dear relative sent his hand from the opening, and my belly stirred for him.

5 I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, on the handles of the lock.

5 I rose up to open to my dear relative; my hands dropped myrrh, my fingers full of myrrh, on the handles of the locking bar. 5 I rose up to open to my dear relative; my hands dropped myrrh, my fingers full of myrrh, on the handles of the locking bar.

6 I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spoke: I sought him, but I couldn’t find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.

6 I opened to my dear relative; my dear relative passed by; my soul went out at his word; I sought him, but I didn’t find him; I called him, but he didn’t answer me. 6 I opened to my dear relative; my dear relative passed by; my soul went out at his word; I sought him, but I didn’t find him; I called him, but he didn’t answer me.

7 The watchmen who went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.

7 The watchmen who go around in the city found me; they hit me; they wounded me. The watchmen on the walls carried away my veil from me. 7 The watchmen who go around in the city found me; they hit me; they wounded me. The watchmen on the walls carried away my veil from me.

8 I charge you, Oh daughters of Jerusalem, if you find my beloved, that you tell him, that I am sick of love.

8 ὥρκισα ὑμᾶς, θυγατέρες Ἱερουσαλήμ, ἐν ταῖς δυνάμεσιν καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἰσχύσεσιν τοῦ ἀγροῦ, ἐὰν εὕρητε τὸν ἀδελφιδόν μου, τί ἀπαγγείλητε αὐτῷ;
8 ὥρκισα ὑμᾶς, θυγατέρες Ἱερουσαλήμ, ἐν ταῖς δυνάμεσι καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἰσχύσεσι τοῦ ἀγροῦ· ἐὰν εὕρητε τὸν ἀδελφιδόν μου, τί ἀπαγγείλητε αὐτῷ;
8 I have charged you, Oh daughters of Jerusalem, by the powers and the strengths of the field; if you should find my dear relative, what will you say to him? That I have been wounded with love. 8 I have charged you, Oh daughters of Jerusalem, by the powers and the strengths of the field; if you should find my dear relative, what will you say to him? That I have been wounded with love.

9 What is your beloved more than another beloved, Oh you fairest among women? What is your beloved more than another beloved, that you do so charge us?

9 τί ἀδελφιδός σου ἀπὸ ἀδελφιδοῦ, καλὴ ἐν γυναιξίν, τί ἀδελφιδός σου ἀπὸ ἀδελφιδοῦ, ὅτι οὕτως ὥρκισας ἡμᾶς; 9 Τί ἀδελφιδός σου ἀπὸ ἀδελφιδοῦ, καλὴ ἐν γυναιξί;
τί ἀδελφιδός σου ἀπὸ ἀδελφιδοῦ, ὅτι οὕτως ὥρκισας ἡμᾶς;
9 What is your dear relative more than another dear relative, Oh you beautiful among women? what is your dear relative more than another dear relative, that you have thus charged us? 9 What is your dear relative more than another dear relative, Oh you beautiful among women? what is your dear relative more than another dear relative, that you have thus charged us?

Admiration by the Bride

10 My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among 10,000.
