Israēl’s Labor Increased

1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, “Thus says Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’ ”

1 And after these things Moses and Aarōn went in to Pharaō and said to him, “The Lord God of Israēl says this. ‛Send out my people in order that they may celebrate a feast to me in the wilderness.’ ” 1 And after these things Moses and Aarōn went in to Pharaō and said to him, “The Lord God of Israēl says this. ‛Send out my people in order that they may celebrate a feast to me in the wilderness.’ ”

2 And Pharaoh said, “Who is Yahweh, that I should obey his voice to let Israēl go? I don’t know Yahweh, neither will I let Israēl go.”

2 καὶ εἶπεν Φαραὼ τίς ἐστιν οὗ εἰσακούσομαι τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ὥστε ἐξαποστεῖλαι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραήλ;
2 καὶ εἶπε Φαραώ· τίς ἐστιν οὗ εἰσακούσομαι τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ, ὥστε ἐξαποστεῖλαι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραήλ;
2 And Pharaō said, “Who is this whose voice I shall obey so that I send out the sons of Israēl? I don’t know the Lord, and I am not sending Israēl out.” 2 And Pharaō said, “Who is this whose voice I shall obey so that I send out the sons of Israēl? I don’t know the Lord, and I am not sending Israēl out.”

3 And they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Let us go, please, three days’ journey into the desert, and sacrifice to Yahweh our Elohim; lest he fall on us with pestilence, or with the sword.”

3 And they say to him, “The God of the Hebrews has summoned us. Therefore, we will go a three-days’ trip into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to our God, lest death or murder meet us.” 3 And they say to him, “The God of the Hebrews has summoned us. Therefore, we will go a three-days’ trip into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to our God, lest death or murder meet us.”

4 And the king of Egypt said to them, “Why do you, Moses and Aaron, free the people from their works? Get to your burdens.”

4 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου ἵνα τί, Μωυσῇ καὶ Ἀαρών, διαστρέφετε τὸν λαόν μου ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων;
4 καὶ εἶπε αὐτοῖς βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου· ἱνατί Μωυσῆ καὶ Ἀαρὼν διαστρέφετε τὸν λαὸν ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων;
4 And the king of Aigypt said to them, “Moses and Aarōn, why are you diverting my people from their works? Each of you, go back to his work.” 4 And the king of Aigypt said to them, “Moses and Aarōn, why are you diverting my people from their works? Each of you, go back to his work.”

5 And Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land now are many, and you make them rest from their burdens.”

5 And Pharaō said, “Look! the people of the land now are numerous. Therefore, let us not give them relief from their work.” 5 And Pharaō said, “Look! the people of the land now are numerous. Therefore, let us not give them relief from their work.”

6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

6 Then Pharaō instructed the people’s taskmasters and recorders, saying, 6 Then Pharaō instructed the people’s taskmasters and recorders, saying,

7 “You shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as before; let them go and gather straw for themselves.

7 “No longer will straw continue to be given to the people for brick-making, as it was yesterday and the third day. Let them go themselves and gather straw for themselves. 7 “No longer will straw continue to be given to the people for brick-making, as it was yesterday and the third day. Let them go themselves and gather straw for themselves.

8 And the tale of the bricks, which they made before, you shall lay on them; you shall not diminish anything of it; for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

8 And you shall impose on them the quota of brick-making that they themselves make each day; you shall not deduct anything. For they have spare time. For this reason they have cried out, saying, ‛Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.’ 8 And you shall impose on them the quota of brick-making that they themselves make each day; you shall not deduct anything. For they have spare time. For this reason they have cried out, saying, ‛Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.’

9 Let there more work be laid on the men, that they may labour in it; and don’t let them regard vain words.”

9 Let the work of these people be made heavy, and let them be busy with these things and don’t let them be busy with empty words.” 9 Let the work of these people be made heavy, and let them be busy with these things and don’t let them be busy with empty words.”

10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I won’t give you straw.

10 Then the taskmasters and recorders kept urging them on and telling the people, saying, “Pharaō says this, ‛I am no longer giving you straw.’ 10 Then the taskmasters and recorders kept urging them on and telling the people, saying, “Pharaō says this, ‛I am no longer giving you straw.’

11 Go! Get you straw where you can find it; yet nothing of your work shall be diminished.’ ”

11 While you go, gather for yourselves straw wherever you may find it, for nothing is being deducted from your quota.” 11 While you go, gather for yourselves straw wherever you may find it, for nothing is being deducted from your quota.”

12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

12 And the people were scattered in the whole of Aigypt to gather stubble for straw. 12 And the people were scattered in the whole land of Aigypt to gather stubble for straw.

13 And the taskmasters hurried them, saying, “Fulfill your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.”

13 Now the taskmasters kept urging them on, saying, “Finish the customary daily work just as when the straw was being given to you.” 13 Now the taskmasters kept urging them on, saying, “Finish the customary daily work just as when the straw was being given to you.”

14 And the officers of the sons of Israēl, which Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, “Why you haven’t fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today, as before?”

14 καὶ ἐμαστιγώθησαν οἱ γραμματεῖς τοῦ γένους τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ οἱ κατασταθέντες ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ὑπὸ τῶν ἐπιστατῶν τοῦ Φαραὼ λέγοντες διὰ τί οὐ συνετελέσατε τὰς συντάξεις ὑμῶν τῆς πλινθείας καθάπερ ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ἡμέραν, καὶ τὸ τῆς σήμερον; 14 καὶ ἐμαστιγώθησαν οἱ γραμματεῖς τοῦ γένους τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, οἱ κατασταθέντες ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ὑπὸ τῶν ἐπιστατῶν τοῦ Φαραώ, λέγοντες· διατί οὐ συνετελέσατε τὰς συντάξεις ὑμῶν τῆς πλινθείας καθάπερ χθὲς καὶ τρίτην ἡμέραν, καὶ τὸ τῆς σήμερον;
14 And the recorders of the race of the sons of Israēl, who had been set over them by the supervisors of Pharaō, were beaten, saying, “Why didn’t you finish your quotas of brick-making, just as yesterday and the third day, also today?” 14 And the recorders of the race of the sons of Israēl, who had been set over them by the supervisors of Pharaō, were beaten, saying, “Why didn’t you finish your quotas of brick-making, just as yesterday and the third day, also today?”

15 Then the officers of the sons of Israēl came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, “Why deal you thus with your servants?

15 εἰσελθόντες δὲ οἱ γραμματεῖς τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ κατεβόησαν πρὸς Φαραὼ λέγοντες ἵνα τί οὕτως ποιεῖς τοῖς σοῖς οἰκέταις; 15 εἰσελθόντες δὲ οἱ γραμματεῖς τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ κατεβόησαν πρὸς Φαραὼ λέγοντες· ἱνατί σὺ οὕτως ποιεῖς τοῖς σοῖς οἰκέταις;
15 Then after the recorders of the sons of Israēl came in, they cried out to Pharaō, saying, “Why are you doing this to your domestics? 15 Then after the recorders of the sons of Israēl came in, they cried out to Pharaō, saying, “Why are you doing this to your domestics?

16 There is no straw given to your servants, and they say to us, ‘Make brick!’ and, behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people.”

16 Straw is not being provided for your domestics, and they tell us to make the brick, and look, your servants have been beaten. So you will treat your people unjustly.” 16 Straw is not being provided for your domestics, and they tell us to make the brick, and look, your servants have been beaten. So you will treat your people unjustly.”

17 But he said, “You are idle, you are idle; therefore you say, ‘Let’s go and do sacrifice to Yahweh.’

17 And he said to them, “You have spare time; you are lazy people! Because of this you say, ‛Let us go; let us offer sacrifice to our God.’ 17 And he said to them, “You have spare time; you are lazy people! Because of this you say, ‛Let us go; let us offer sacrifice to our God.’

18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet you shall deliver the tale of bricks.”

18 Now then, go, and get working! For the straw won’t be provided for you, and you shall deliver the quota of brick-making.” 18 Now then, go, and get working! For the straw won’t be provided for you, and you shall deliver the quota of brick-making.”

19 And the officers of the sons of Israēl saw that they were in evil case, after it was said, “You shall not diminish anything from your bricks of your daily task.”

19 Now the recorders of the sons of Israēl were seeing themselves in difficulties, saying, “You shall not fail to meet the customary amount of brick-making daily.” 19 Now the recorders of the sons of Israēl were seeing themselves in difficulties, saying, “You shall not fail to meet the customary amount of brick-making daily.”

20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh.

20 Then, as they were going out from Pharaō, they met Moses and Aarōn coming to meet them. 20 Then, as they were going out from Pharaō, they met Moses and Aarōn coming to meet them.

21 And they said to them, “Yahweh look on you, and judge; because you have made our scent to stink in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.”

21 And they said to them, “May God see you and judge, because you made our odour nauseous before Pharaō and before his attendants, to give a sword into his hands to kill us.” 21 And they said to them, “May God see you and judge, because you made our odour nauseous before Pharaō and before his attendants, to give a sword into his hands to kill us.”

22 And Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, “Lord, why have you brought evil to this people? Why is it that you have sent me?

22 ἐπέστρεψεν δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπεν κύριε, διὰ τί ἐκάκωσας τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον;
καὶ ἵνα τί ἀπέσταλκάς με;
22 ἐπέστρεψε δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς Κύριον καὶ εἶπε· δέομαι, Κύριε· τί ἐκάκωσας τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον;
καὶ ἱνατί ἀπέσταλκάς με;
22 Then Moses turned to the Lord and said, “Lord, why did you hurt this people? And why have you sent me? 22 Then Moses turned to the Lord and said, “Please, Lord, why did you hurt this people? And why have you sent me?

23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have you delivered your people at all.”

23 And from the time when I have gone to Pharaō to speak in your name, he has hurt this people, and you have not delivered your people.” 23 And from the time when I have gone to Pharaō to speak in your name, he has hurt this people, and you have not delivered your people.”
