and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our co-soldier, and to the church in your home, and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our co-soldier, and to the church in your home,

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philēmon’s Love and Faith

hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints; hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints;
that the fellowship of your faith may become effective in the knowledge of every good thing which is in you for Christ. that the fellowship of your faith may become effective in the knowledge of every good thing which is in you for Christ Jesus.
For I have much joy and encouragement in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother. For I have much joy and encouragement in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.

Paul Pleads for Onēsimus

Therefore, having much confidence in Christ to command you to do what is proper, Therefore, having much confidence in Christ to command you to do what is proper,
yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you, since I am such a person as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus; yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you, since I am such a person as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ;
I appeal to you for my child Onēsimus, whom I have fathered in chains, I appeal to you for my child Onēsimus, whom I have fathered in my chains,
who once was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me. who once was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me.
I have sent him back to you, that is, my own heart, I have sent him back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart,
whom I wanted to keep with me, so that on your behalf he might minister to me in my imprisonment for the gospel; whom I wanted to keep with me, so that on your behalf he might minister to me in my imprisonment for the gospel;
but without your consent I didn’t want to do anything, so that your goodness would not be according to compulsion but according to your free will. but without your consent I didn’t want to do anything, so that your goodness would not be according to compulsion but according to your free will.
For perhaps for this reason he was separated from you for a time, so that you would have him back forever, For perhaps for this reason he was separated from you for a time, so that you would have him back forever,
16 οὐκέτι ὡς δοῦλον ἀλλ᾿ ὑπὲρ δοῦλον, ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν, μάλιστα ἐμοί, πόσῳ δὲ μᾶλλον σοί καὶ ἐν σαρκὶ καὶ ἐν κυρίῳ. 16 οὐκέτι ὡς δοῦλον, ἀλλ᾿ ὑπὲρ δοῦλον, ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν, μάλιστα ἐμοί, πόσῳ δὲ μᾶλλόν σοι καὶ ἐν σαρκὶ καὶ ἐν κυρίῳ;
no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
If then you have me as a partner, accept him as you would me. If then you have me as a partner, accept him as you would me.
But if he has wronged you or owes you anything, charge that to my account; But if he has wronged you or owes you anything, charge that to my account;
I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand, I will repay it (not to mention to you that you owe yourself to me as well). I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand, I will repay it (not to mention to you that you owe yourself to me as well).
Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ. Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in the Lord.
Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than what I say. Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than what I say.
At the same time also prepare a lodging for me, for I hope that through your prayers I will be given to you. At the same time also prepare a lodging for me, for I hope that through your prayers I will be given to you.
