Young Joash Influenced by Jehoiada

1 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 40 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.

1 Joas was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 40 years in Jerousalēm; and his mother’s name was Sabia of Bērsabee. 1 Joas was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 40 years in Jerousalēm; and his mother’s name was Sabia of Bērsabee.

2 And Joash did what was right in the sight of Yahweh all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

2 And Joas did what right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jōdae the priest. 2 And Joas did what right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jōdae the priest.

3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he fathered sons and daughters.

3 And Jōdae took to himself two wives, and they gave birth to sons and daughters. 3 And Jōdae took to himself two wives, and they gave birth to sons and daughters.

Faithless Priests

4 And it came to be after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of Yahweh.

4 And it happened afterward that it came into the heart of Joas to repair the house of the Lord. 4 And it happened afterward that it came into the heart of Joas to repair the house of the Lord.

5 And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israēl money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that you hurry the matter. However the Levites hurried it not.

5 And he gathered the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out into the cities of Jouda, and collect money of all Israēl to repair the house of the Lord from year to year, and make haste to speak of it. But the Levites didn’t hurry. 5 And he gathered the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out into the cities of Jouda, and collect money of all Israēl to repair the house of the Lord from year to year, and make haste to speak of it. But the Levites didn’t hurry.

6 And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, Why you haven’t required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the congregation of Israēl, for the tent of witness?

6 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν βασιλεὺς Ἰωὰς τὸν Ἰωδαὲ τὸν ἄρχοντα καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ διὰ τί οὐκ ἐπεσκέψω περὶ τῶν Λευιτῶν τοῦ εἰσενέγκαι ἀπὸ Ἰούδα καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ τὸ κεκριμένον ὑπὸ Μωυσῇ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ θεοῦ, ὅτε ἐξεκκλησίασεν τὸν Ἰσραὴλ εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου; 6 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν βασιλεὺς Ἰωὰς τὸν Ἰωδαέ τὸν ἄρχοντα καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· διατί οὐκ ἐπεσκέψω περὶ τῶν Λευιτῶν τοῦ εἰσενέγκαι ἀπὸ Ἰούδα καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ τὸ κεκριμένον ὑπὸ Μωυσῆ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὅτι ἐξεκκλησίασε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου;
6 And king Joas called Jōdae the chief, and said to him, Why you haven’t looked after the Levites, so that they should bring from Jouda and Jerousalēm what was prescribed by Moses the man of God, when he assembled Israēl at the tent of witness? 6 And king Joas called Jōdae the chief, and said to him, Why you haven’t looked after the Levites, so that they should bring from Jouda and Jerousalēm what was prescribed by Moses the man of God, when he assembled Israēl at the tent of witness?

7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of Yahweh did they bestow on Baals.

7 For Gotholia was a transgressor, and her sons tore down the house of God; for they offered the holy things of the house of the Lord to Baals. 7 For Gotholia was a transgressor, and her sons tore down the house of God; for they offered the holy things of the house of the Lord to Baals.

Temple Repaired

8 And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of Yahweh.

8 And the king said, Let a box be made, and let it be put at the gate of the house of the Lord without. 8 And the king said, Let a box be made, and let it be put at the gate of the house of the Lord without.

9 And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to Yahweh the collection that Moses the servant of God laid on Israēl in the wilderness.

9 And let men proclaim in Jouda an in Jerousalēm, that the people should bring to the Lord, as Moses the servant of God spoke concerning Israēl in the wilderness. 9 And let men proclaim in Jouda an in Jerousalēm, that the people should bring to the Lord, as Moses the servant of God spoke concerning Israēl in the wilderness.

10 And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.

10 And all the princes and all the people gave, and brought in, and cast into the box until it was filled. 10 And all the princes and all the people gave, and brought in, and cast into the box until it was filled.

11 Now it came to be, that at what time the chest was brought to the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

11 And it happened, when they brought in the box to the officers of the king by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that the money was more than sufficient, then came the king’s scribe, and the officer of the high priest, and emptied the box, and restored it to its place. Thus they did day by day, and collected much money. 11 And it happened, when they brought in the box to the officers of the king by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that the money was more than sufficient, then came the king’s scribe, and the officer of the high priest, and emptied the box, and restored it to its place. Thus they did day by day, and collected much money.

12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of Yahweh, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of Yahweh, and also such as wrought iron and bronze to mend the house of Yahweh.

12 And the king and Jōdae the priest gave it to the workmen employed in the service of the house of the Lord, and they hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, also smiths and braziers to repair the house of the Lord. 12 And the king and Jōdae the priest gave it to the workmen employed in the service of the house of the Lord, and they hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, also smiths and braziers to repair the house of the Lord.

13 So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.

13 And the workmen wrought, and the works prospered in their hands, and they established the house of the Lord on its foundation, and strengthened it. 13 And the workmen wrought, and the works prospered in their hands, and they established the house of the Lord on its foundation, and strengthened it.

14 And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, of which were made vessels for the house of Yahweh, even vessels to minister, and to offer in addition, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of Yahweh continually all the days of Jehoiada.

14 And when they had finished it, they brought to the king and to Jōdae the remainder of the money, and they made vessels for the house of the Lord, vessels of service for whole-burnt-offerings, and gold and silver censers; and they offered up whole-burnt-offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jōdae.

15 But Jehoiada grown old, and was full of days when he died; 100 and 30 years old was he when he died.

15 And Jōdae grew old, being full of days, and he died, being 100 and 30 years old at his death. 15 And Jōdae grew old, being full of days, and he died, being 100 and 30 years old at his death.

16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israēl, both toward God, and toward his house.

16 And they buried him with the kings in the city of David, because he had dealt well with Israēl, and with God and his house. 16 And they buried him with the kings in the city of David, because he had dealt well with Israēl, and with God and his house.

17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king listened to them.

17 And it happened after the death of Jōdae, that the princes of Jouda went in, and did obeisance to the king. Then the king listened to them. 17 And it happened after the death of Jōdae, that the princes of Jouda went in, and did obeisance to the king. Then the king listened to them.

18 And they left the house of Yahweh Elohim of their fathers, and served groves and idols; and wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.

18 And they forsook the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served the Astartes and idols; and there was wrath on Jouda and Jerousalēm in that day. 18 And they forsook the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served the Astartes and idols; and there was wrath on Jouda and Jerousalēm in that day.

19 Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again to Yahweh; and they testified against them; but they would not give ear.

19 yet he sent prophets to them, to turn them to the Lord; but they didn’t listen; and he testified to them, but they didn’t obey. 19 yet he sent prophets to them, to turn them to the Lord; but they didn’t listen; and he testified to them, but they didn’t obey.

Joash Murders Son of Jehoiada

20 And the Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said to them, Thus says God, Why transgress you the commandments of Yahweh, that you cannot prosper? because you have forsaken Yahweh, he has also forsaken you.

20 καὶ πνεῦμα θεοῦ ἐνέδυσεν τὸν Ἀζαρίαν τὸν τοῦ Ἰωδαὲ τὸν ἱερέα, καὶ ἀνέστη ἐπάνω τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ εἶπεν τάδε λέγει κύριος τί παραπορεύεσθε τὰς ἐντολὰς κυρίου;
20 καὶ πνεῦμα Θεοῦ ἐνέδυσε τὸν Ἀζαρίαν τὸν τοῦ Ἰωδαὲ τὸν ἱερέα καὶ ἀνέστη ἐπάνω τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ εἶπε· τάδε λέγει Κύριος· τί παραπορεύεσθε τὰς ἐντολὰς Κυρίου;
20 And the Spirit of God came on Azarias the son of Jōdae the priest, and he stood up above the people, and said, Thus says the Lord, Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord? so you shall not prosper; for you have forsaken the Lord, and he will forsake you. 20 And the Spirit of God came on Azarias the son of Jōdae the priest, and he stood up above the people, and said, Thus says the Lord, Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord? so you shall not prosper; for you have forsaken the Lord, and he will forsake you.

21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of Yahweh.

21 And they conspired against him, and stone him by command of king Joas in the court of the Lord’s house. 21 And they conspired against him, and stone him by command of king Joas in the court of the Lord’s house.

22 Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. And when he died, he said, Yahweh look on it, and require it.

22 So Joas didn’t remember the kindness which his father Jōdae had exercised toward him, but killed his son. And as he died, he said, The Lord look on it, and judge. 22 So Joas didn’t remember the kindness which his father Jōdae had exercised toward him, but killed his son. And as he died, he said, The Lord look on it, and judge.

Aram Invades and Defeats Judah

23 And it came to be at the end of the year, that the army of Syria came up against him; and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them to the king of Damascus.

23 And it happened after the end of the year, that the army of Syria went up against him, and came against Jouda and Jerousalēm; and they killed all the chiefs of the people among the people, and all their spoils they sent to the king of Damascus. 23 And it happened after the end of the year, that the army of Syria went up against him, and came against Jouda and Jerousalēm; and they killed all the chiefs of the people among the people, and all their spoils they sent to the king of Damascus.

24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and Yahweh delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken Yahweh Elohim of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.

24 For the army of Syria came with few men, yet God gave into their hands a very large army, because they had forsaken the God of their fathers; and he brought judgments on Joas. 24 For the army of Syria came with few men, yet God gave into their hands a very large army, because they had forsaken the God of their fathers; and he brought judgments on Joas.

25 And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.

25 And after they had departed from him, when they had left him in sore diseases, then his servants conspired against him because of the blood of the son of Jōdae the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died, and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchre of the kings. 25 And after they had departed from him, when they had left him in sore diseases, then his servants conspired against him because of the blood of the son of Jōdae the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died, and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchre of the kings.

26 And these are they who conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shifoodh an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.

26 And they who conspired against him were Zabed the son of Samaath the Ammanite, and Jozabed the son of Samareth the Moabite. 26 And they who conspired against him were Zabed the son of Samaath the Ammanite, and Jozabed the son of Samareth the Moabite.

27 Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid on him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
