Amaziah Succeeds Joash in Judah
1 Amaziah was 25 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 29 years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
1 Amasias began to reign when he was 25 years old, and he reigned 29 years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Joadaen of Jerusalem. | 1 Amasias began to reign when he was 25 years old, and he reigned 29 years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Joadaen of Jerusalem. |
2 And he did what was right in the sight of Yahweh, but not with a perfect heart.
2 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart. | 2 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart. |
3 Now it came to be, when the kingdom was established to him, that he killed his servants that had killed the king his father.
3 And it happened, when the kingdom was established in his hand, that he killed his servants who had slain the king his father. | 3 And it happened, when the kingdom was established in his hand, that he killed his servants who had slain the king his father. |
4 But he killed not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where Yahweh commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
4 But he killed not their sons, according to the covenant of the law of the Lord, as it is written, and as the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, and the sons shall not die for the fathers, but they shall die each for his own sin. | 4 But he killed not their sons, according to the covenant of the law of the Lord, as it is written, and as the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, and the sons shall not die for the fathers, but they shall die each for his own sin. |
Amaziah Defeats Edomites
5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin; and he numbered them from 20 years old and above, and found them 300,000 choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
5 And Amasias assembled the house of Jouda, and appointed them according to the houses of their families for captains of thousands and captains of hundreds in all Jouda and Jerusalem; and he numbered them from 20 years old and upwards, and found them 300,000 able to go out to war, holding spear and shield. |
6 He hired also 100,000 mighty men of valour out of Israēl for 100 talents of silver.
6 Also he hired of Israēl a 100,000 mighty men for 100 talents of silver. | 6 Also he hired of Israēl a 100,000 mighty men for 100 talents of silver. |
7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, Oh king, don’t let the army of Israēl go with you; for Yahweh is not with Israēl, namely, with all the children of Ephraim.
7 And there came a man of God to him, saying, Oh king, don’t let the army of Israēl go with you; for the Lord is not with Israēl, even all the sons of Ephraim. | 7 And there came a man of God to him, saying, Oh king, don’t let the army of Israēl go with you; for the Lord is not with Israēl, even all the sons of Ephraim. |
8 But if you will go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make you fall before the enemy; for God has power to help, and to cast down.
8 For if you shall undertake to strengthen yourself with these, then the lord shall put you to flight before the enemies; for it is of the Lord both to strengthen and to put to flight. | 8 For if you shall undertake to strengthen yourself with these, then the lord shall put you to flight before the enemies; for it is of the Lord both to strengthen and to put to flight. |
9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the 100 talents which I have given to the army of Israēl? And the man of God answered, Yahweh is able to give you much more than this.

9 And Amasias said to the man of God, But what shall I do for the 100 talents which I have given to the army of Israēl? And the man of God said, The Lord can give you much more than these. | 9 And Amasias said to the man of God, But what shall I do for the 100 talents which I have given to the army of Israēl? And the man of God said, The Lord can give you much more than these. |
10 Then Amaziah separated them, namely, the army that came to him out of Ephraim, to go home again; therefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
10 And Amasias separated from the army that came to him from Ephraim, that they might go away to their place; and they were very angry with Jouda, and they returned to their place with great wrath. | 10 And Amasias separated from the army that came to him from Ephraim, that they might go away to their place; and they were very angry with Jouda, and they returned to their place with great wrath. |
11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir 10,000.
11 And Amasias strengthened himself, and took his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote there the children of Seir 10,000. | 11 And Amasias strengthened himself, and took his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote there the children of Seir 10,000. |
12 And other 10,000 left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
12 And the children of Jouda took 10,000 prisoners, and they carried them to the top of the precipice, and cast them headlong from the top of the precipice, and they were all dashed to pieces. | 12 And the children of Jouda took 10,000 prisoners, and they carried them to the top of the precipice, and cast them headlong from the top of the precipice, and they were all dashed to pieces. |
13 But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell on the cities of Judah, from Samaria even to Beth-horon, and smote 3000 of them, and took much spoil.
13 And the men of the army whom Amasias sent back so that they should not go with him to battle, went and attacked the cities of Jouda, from Samaria to Baethoron; and they smote 3000 among them, and took much spoil. | 13 And the men of the army whom Amasias sent back so that they should not go with him to battle, went and attacked the cities of Jouda, from Samaria to Baethoron; and they smote 3000 among them, and took much spoil. |
Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry
14 Now it came to be, after that Amaziah came from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense to them.
14 And it happened, after Amasias had returned from smiting Idumea, that he brought home the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up for himself as gods, and bowed down before them, and he sacrificed to them. | 14 And it happened, after Amasias had returned from smiting Idumea, that he brought home the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up for himself as gods, and bowed down before them, and he sacrificed to them. |
15 Therefore the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet, which said to him, Why have you sought after the gods of the people, which couldn’t deliver their own people out of your hand?
15 And the anger of the Lord came on Amasias, and he sent him a prophet, and he said to him, Why have you sought the gods of the people, which haven’t rescued their own people out of your hand? | 15 And the anger of the Lord came on Amasias, and he sent him a prophet, and he said to him, Why have you sought the gods of the people, which haven’t rescued their own people out of your hand? |
16 And it came to be, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, Are you made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why should you be smitten? Then the prophet forbear, and said, I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and haven’t listened to my counsel.

16 And it happened when the prophet was speaking to him, that he said to him, have I made you king’s counsellor? take heed lest you be scourged; and the prophet forebore, and said, I know that God is disposed against you to destroy you, because you have done this thing, and haven’t listened to my counsel. | 16 And it happened when the prophet was speaking to him, that he said to him, have I made you king’s counsellor? take heed lest you be scourged; and the prophet forebore, and said, I know that God is disposed against you to destroy you, because you have done this thing, and haven’t listened to my counsel. |
Amaziah Defeated by Joash of Israēl
17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israēl, saying, Come, let’s see one another in the face.
17 And Amasias king of Jouda took counsel, and sent to Joas, son of Joachaz, son of Jeu, king of Israēl, saying, Come, and let’s look one another in the face. | 17 And Amasias king of Jouda took counsel, and sent to Joas, son of Joachaz, son of Jeu, king of Israēl, saying, Come, and let’s look one another in the face. |
18 And Joash king of Israēl sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give your daughter to my son to wife; and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trampled down the thistle.

18 And Joas king of Israēl sent to Amasias king of Jouda, saying, The thistle that was in Libanus sent to the cedar that was in Libanus, saying, Give your daughter to my son to wife; but, behold, your wild beasts of the field that are in Libanus shall come; and the wild beasts did come, and trod down the thistle. |
19 You say, Lo, you have smitten the Edomites; and your heart lifts you up to boast: abide now at home; why should you meddle to your hurt, that you should fall, even you, and Judah with you?
19 You have said, Behold, I have smitten Idumea, and your stout heart exalts you: now stay at home; for why do you implicate yourself in mischief, that you should fall, and Jouda with you. | 19 You have said, Behold, I have smitten Idumea, and your stout heart exalts you: now stay at home; for why do you implicate yourself in mischief, that you should fall, and Jouda with you. |
20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.
20 Nevertheless Amasias didn’t listen, for it was of the Lord to deliver him into the enemy’s hands, because he sought after the gods of the Idumeans. | 20 Nevertheless Amasias didn’t listen, for it was of the Lord to deliver him into the enemy’s hands, because he sought after the gods of the Idumeans. |
21 So Joash the king of Israēl went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah.
21 So Joas king of Israēl went up; and they saw one another, he and Amasias king of Jouda, in Baethsamys, which is of Jouda. | 21 So Joas king of Israēl went up; and they saw one another, he and Amasias king of Jouda, in Baethsamys, which is of Jouda. |
22 And Judah was put to the worse before Israēl, and they fled every man to his tent.
22 And Jouda was put to flight before Israēl, and they fled every man to his tent. | 22 And Jouda was put to flight before Israēl, and they fled every man to his tent. |
23 And Joash the king of Israēl took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, 400 cubits.
