1 Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of Yahweh, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things.
1 Now Paschor the son of Emmer, the priest, who also had been appointed chief of the house of the Lord, heard Jeremias prophesying these words. | 1 Now Paschor the son of Emmer, the priest, who also had been appointed chief of the house of the Lord, heard Jeremias prophesying these words. |
2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of Yahweh.
2 And he smote him, and cast him into the dungeon which was by the gate of the upper house that was set apart, which was by the house of the Lord. | 2 And he smote him, and cast him into the dungeon which was by the gate of the upper house that was set apart, which was by the house of the Lord. |
3 And it happened on the next day, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah to him, Yahweh hasn’t called your name Pashur, but Magor-missabib.
3 And Paschor brought Jeremias out of the dungeon; and Jeremias said to him, The Lord hasn’t called your name Paschor, but Exile. | 3 And Paschor brought Jeremias out of the dungeon; and Jeremias said to him, The Lord hasn’t called your name Paschor, but Exile. |
4 For thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself, and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall behold it; and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword.
4 For thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give you up to captivity with all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall see it; and I will give you and all Juda into the hands of the king of Babylon, and they shall carry them captives, and cut them in pieces with swords. |
5 Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this city, and all the labours of it, and all the precious things of it, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.
5 And I will give all the strength of this city, and all the labours of it, and all the treasures of the king of Juda, into the hands of his enemies, and they shall bring them to Babylon. | 5 And I will give all the strength of this city, and all the labours of it, and all the treasures of the king of Juda, into the hands of his enemies, and they shall bring them to Babylon. |
6 And you, Pashur, and all that dwell in your house shall go into captivity; and you shall come to Babylon, and there you shall die, and shall be buried there, you, and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied lies.
6 And you and all the dwellers in your house shall go into captivity; and you shall die in Babylon, and there you and all your friends shall be buried, to whom you have prophesied lies. | 6 And you and all the dwellers in your house shall go into captivity; and you shall die in Babylon, and there you and all your friends shall be buried, to whom you have prophesied lies. |
7 Oh Yahweh, you have deceived me, and I was deceived: you are stronger than I, and have prevailed: I am in derision daily, everyone mocks me.
7 You have deceived me, Oh Lord, and I have been deceived: you have been strong, and has prevailed: I am become a laughing-stock, I am continually mocked every day. | 7 You have deceived me, Oh Lord, and I have been deceived: you have been strong, and has prevailed: I am become a laughing-stock, I am continually mocked every day. |
8 For since I spoke, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of Yahweh was made a reproach to me, and a derision, daily.
8 For I will laugh with my bitter speech, I will call on rebellion and misery; for the word of the Lord is become a reproach to me and a mockery all my days. | 8 For I will laugh with my bitter speech, I will call on rebellion and misery; for the word of the Lord is become a reproach to me and a mockery all my days. |
9 Then I said, I won’t make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I couldn’t stay.
9 Then I said, I will by no means name the name of the Lord, and I will no more at all speak in his name. But it was a burning fire flaming in my bones, and I am utterly weakened on all sides, and cannot bear up. | 9 Then I said, I will by no means name the name of the Lord, and I will no more at all speak in his name. But it was a burning fire flaming in my bones, and I am utterly weakened on all sides, and cannot bear up. |
10 For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Perhaps he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.
10 For I have heard the reproach of many gathering round, saying, Conspire you, and let’s conspire together against him, even all his friends: watch his intentions, if perhaps he shall be deceived, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall be avenged on him. | 10 For I have heard the reproach of many gathering round, saying, Conspire you, and let’s conspire together against him, even all his friends: watch his intentions, if perhaps he shall be deceived, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall be avenged on him. |
11 But Yahweh is with me as a mighty terrible one; therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.
11 But the Lord was with me as a mighty man of war; therefore they persecuted me, but couldn’t perceive anything against me; they were greatly confounded, for they perceived not their disgrace, which shall never be forgotten. | 11 But the Lord was with me as a mighty man of war; therefore they persecuted me, but couldn’t perceive anything against me; they were greatly confounded, for they perceived not their disgrace, which shall never be forgotten. |
12 But, Oh Yahweh of armies, that try the righteous, and see the insides and the heart, let me see your vengeance on them; for to you have I opened my cause.
12 Oh Lord, that prove just deeds, understanding the insides and hearts, let me see your vengeance on them; for to you I have revealed my cause. | 12 Oh Lord, that prove just deeds, understanding the insides and hearts, let me see your vengeance on them; for to you I have revealed my cause. |
13 Sing to Yahweh, praise you Yahweh; for he has delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.
13 Sing you to the Lord, sing praise to him; for he has rescued the soul of the poor from the hand of evil-doers. | 13 Sing you to the Lord, sing praise to him; for he has rescued the soul of the poor from the hand of evil-doers. |
14 Cursed be the day in which I was born: don’t let the day in which my mother gave birth to me be blessed.
14 Cursed be the day in which I was born: the day in which my mother brought me forth, let it not be blessed. | 14 Cursed be the day in which I was born: the day in which my mother brought me forth, let it not be blessed. |
15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born to you; making him very glad.
15 Cursed be the man who brought the glad tidings to my father, saying, A male child is born to you. | 15 Cursed be the man who brought the glad tidings to my father, saying, A male child is born to you. |
16 And let that man be as the cities which Yahweh overthrew, and repented not; and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;
16 Let that man rejoice as the cities which the Lord overthrew in wrath, and repented not: let him hear crying in the morning, and loud lamentation at noon; | 16 Let that man rejoice as the cities which the Lord overthrew in wrath, and repented not: let him hear crying in the morning, and loud lamentation at noon; |
17 Because he killed me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me.
17 because he killed me not in the womb, and my mother became not my tomb, and her womb always great with me. | 17 because he killed me not in the womb, and my mother became not my tomb, and her womb always great with me. |
18 Why came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
18 Why is it that I came forth of the womb to see troubles and distresses, and my days are spent in shame? | 18 Why is it that I came forth of the womb to see troubles and distresses, and my days are spent in shame? |
