Ruth

1 Now it happened in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem-Judah went to stay in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-Judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

4 And they took wives of the women of Moab for themselves; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth; and they dwelled there about ten years.

6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab; for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Yahweh had visited his people in giving them bread.

7 Therefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

8 And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each to her mother’s house. May Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me.

8 Καὶ εἶπεν Νωεμὶν ταῖς νύμφαις αὐτῆς, πορεύεσθε δὴ ἀποστράφητε ἑκάστη εἰς οἶκον μητρὸς αὐτῆς· ποιήσαι κύριος μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἔλεος καθὼς ἐποιήσατε μετὰ τῶν τεθνηκότων καὶ μετ’ ἐμοῦ·	8 καὶ εἶπε Νωεμὶν ταῖς δυσὶ νύμφαις αὐτῆς· πορεύεσθαι δή, ἀποστράφητε ἑκάστη εἰς οἶκον μητρὸς αὐτῆς· ποιήσαι Κύριος μετ’ ὑμῶν ἔλεος, καθὼς ἐποιήσατε μετὰ τῶν τεθνηκότων καὶ μετ’ ἐμοῦ·
8 And Nōemi said to her daughters-in-law, “Please go, return each into her mother’s house: may the Lord do mercy with you, just as you have done with the dead, and with me.”	8 And Nōemi said to her daughters-in-law, “Please go, return each into her mother’s house: may the Lord do mercy with you, just as you have done with the dead, and with me.”

9 May Yahweh grant to you that you find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

10 And they said to her, “But we will return with you to your people.”

11 And Naomi said, “Turn again, my daughters. Why will you go with me? Are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

11 Καὶ εἶπεν Νωεμὶν ἐπιστράφητε δή, θυγατέρες μου· καὶ ἵνα τί πορεύεσθε μετ’ ἐμοῦ; μὴ ἔτι μοι υἱοὶ ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ μου καὶ ἔσονται ὑμῖν εἰς ἄνδρας;	11 καὶ εἶπε Νωεμίν· ἐπιστράφητε δή, θυγατέρες μου· καὶ ἱνατί πορεύεσθε μετ’ ἐμοῦ; μὴ ἔτι μοι υἱοὶ ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ μου καὶ ἔσονται ὑμῖν εἰς ἄνδρας;
11 And Nōemi said, “Please turn around now, my daughters; Why go with me? Are there still sons in my womb to be your husbands?”	11 And Nōemi said, “Please turn around now, my daughters; Why go with me? Are there still sons in my womb to be your husbands?”

12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have a husband also tonight, and should also give birth to sons;

12 ἐπιστράφητε δή, θυγατέρες μου, διότι γεγήρακα τοῦ μὴ εἶναι ἀνδρί· ὅτι εἶπα ὅτι ἔστιν μοι ὑπόστασις τοῦ γενηθῆναί με ἀνδρὶ καὶ τέξομαι υἱούς,	12 ἐπιστράφητε δή, θυγατέρες μου, διότι γεγήρακα τοῦ μὴ εἶναι ἀνδρί· ὅτι εἶπα, ὅτι ἔστι μοι ὑπόστασις τοῦ γενηθῆναί με ἀνδρὶ καὶ τέξομαι υἱούς,

13 would you wait for them until they were grown? Would you wait for them from having husbands? No, my daughters; for it grieves me much for your sakes that the hand of Yahweh is gone out against me.”

13 μὴ αὐτοὺς προσδέξεσθε ἕως οὗ ἁδρυνθῶσιν; ἢ αὐτοῖς κατασχεθήσεσθε τοῦ μὴ γενέσθαι ἀνδρί; μὴ δή, θυγατέρες μου, ὅτι ἐπικράνθη μοι ὑπὲρ ὑμᾶς ὅτι ἐξῆλθεν ἐν ἐμοὶ χεὶρ κυρίου.	13 μὴ αὐτοὺς προσδέξεσθαι ἕως οὗ ἁδρυνθῶσιν; ἢ αὐτοῖς κατασχεθήσεσθε τοῦ μὴ γενέσθαι ἀνδρί; μὴ δή, θυγατέρες μου, ὅτι ἐπικράνθη μοι ὑπὲρ ὑμᾶς, ὅτι ἐξῆλθεν ἐν ἐμοὶ χεὶρ Κυρίου.
13 You wouldn’t wait for them until they are mature, eh? Would you refrain from being married for their sakes? 14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law; but Ruth clung to her.

15 And she said, “Behold, your sister-in-law is gone back to her people, and to her gods: return you after your sister-in-law.”

15 And Nōemi said to Rhouth, “Look! your sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; please turn also after your sister-in-law.”	15 And Nōemi said to Rhouth, “Look! your sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; please turn also after your sister-in-law.”

16 And Ruth said, “Don’t beg me to leave you, or to return from following after you; for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

16 And Rhouth said, “Don’t challenge me to leave you or to turn away from following you; Because where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge. 17 Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death separates you and me.”

17 καὶ οὗ ἐὰν ἀποθάνῃς, ἀποθανοῦμαι κἀκεῖ ταφήσομαι· τάδε ποιήσαι μοι κύριος καὶ τάδε προσθείη, ὅτι θάνατος διαστελεῖ ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σου.	17 καὶ οὗ ἐὰν ἀποθάνῃς, ἀποθανοῦμαι, κἀκεῖ ταφήσομαι· τάδε ποιήσαι μοι Κύριος καὶ τάδε προσθείῃ, ὅτι θάνατος διαστελεῖ ἀναμέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ.

18 When she saw that she was very determined to go with her, then she stopped speaking of it to her.

19 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it happened, when they came to Bethlehem, that all the city was stirred up about them, and they said, “Is this Naomi?”

19 Ἐπορεύθησαν δὲ ἀμφότεραι ἕως τοῦ παραγενέσθαι αὐτὰς εἰς Βαιθλεέμ. καὶ ἤχησεν πᾶσα ἡ πόλις ἐπ’ αὐταῖς καὶ εἶπον, αὕτη ἐστὶν Νωεμίν;	19 ἐπορεύθησαν δὲ ἀμφότεραι, ἕως τοῦ παραγενέσθαι αὐτὰς εἰς Βηθλεέμ. καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐλθεῖν αὐτάς εἰς Βηθλεέμ, καὶ ἤχησε πᾶσα ἡ πόλις ἐπ’ αὐταῖς καὶ εἶπον· εἰ αὕτη ἐστὶ Νωεμίν;

20 And she said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi, call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

21 I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty. Why then do you call Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”

21 ἐγὼ πλήρης ἐπορεύθην, καὶ κενὴν ἀπέστρεψέν με ὁ κύριος· καὶ ἵνα τί καλεῖτέ με Νωεμίν; καὶ κύριος ἐταπείνωσέν με, καὶ ὁ ἱκανὸς ἐκάκωσέν με.	21 ἐγὼ πλήρης ἐπορεύθην, καὶ κενὴν ἀπέστρεψέ με ὁ Κύριος· καὶ ἱνατί καλεῖτέ με Νωεμίν; καὶ Κύριος ἐταπείνωσέ με, καὶ ὁ ἱκανὸς ἐκάκωσέ με.

22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab; and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
