Consecration of the Firstborn
1 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, | 1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, |
2 “Consecrate to me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the sons of Israēl, both of man and of beast: it is mine.”
2 Set apart to me every firstborn, first-generated, opening every womb among the sons of Israēl, from man to animal. It is mine! | 2 Set apart to me every firstborn, first-generated, opening every womb among the sons of Israēl, from man to animal. It is mine! |
3 And Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.
3 Then Moses said to the people, “Keep remembering this day in which you came out of Aigypt, from a house of slavery. For by a mighty hand the Lord brought you out from there. And leaven shall not be eaten. | 3 Then Moses said to the people, “Keep remembering this day in which you came out of Aigypt, from a house of slavery. For by a mighty hand the Lord brought you out from there. And leaven shall not be eaten. |
4 This day you came out in the month Abib.
4 For on this very day you are going out in the new month. | 4 For on this very day you are going out in the new month. |
5 And it shall be when Yahweh shall bring you into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month.
5 And it shall be when the Lord your God should brings you into the land of the Chananites and Chettites and Evaites and Gergesites and Amorrites and Pherezites and Jebousites, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you shall also perform this service in this month. |
6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to Yahweh.
6 For six days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the seventh day there is the Lord’s feast. | 6 For six days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the seventh day there is the Lord’s feast. |
7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with you, neither shall there be leaven seen with you in all your quarters.
7 You shall eat unleavened bread for the seven days. Anything leavened shall not be seen among you, nor you shall possess leaven in all your borders. | 7 You shall eat unleavened bread for the seven days. Anything leavened shall not be seen among you, nor you shall possess leaven in all your borders. |
8 And you shall show your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what Yahweh did to me when I came forth out of Egypt.’
8 And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‛Therefore the Lord God did for me when I was going out of Aigypt.’ | 8 And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‛Therefore the Lord God did for me when I was going out of Aigypt.’ |
9 And it shall be for a sign to you on your hand, and for a memorial between your eyes, that Yahweh’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand has Yahweh brought you out of Egypt.
9 And it shall be a sign for you on your hand and a memorial before your eyes in order that the law of the Lord might be in your mouth. For with a mighty hand the Lord brought you out of Aigypt. | 9 And it shall be a sign for you on your hand and a memorial before your eyes in order that the law of the Lord might be in your mouth. For with a mighty hand the Lord brought you out of Aigypt. |
10 You shall therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.
10 And you shall keep this law according to the times of the seasons from days to days. | 10 And you shall keep this law according to the times of the seasons from days to days. |
11 And it shall be when Yahweh shall bring you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and to your fathers, and shall give it you,
11 And it shall be when the Lord your God brings you into the land of the Chananites, in the manner which he swore to your fathers, and he will give it to you, | 11 And it shall be when the Lord your God brings you into the land of the Chananites, in the manner which he swore to your fathers, and he will give it to you, |
12 that you shall set apart to Yahweh all that opens the matrix, and every firstborn that comes of a beast which you have; the males shall be Yahweh’s.
12 you shall also set apart everything opening the womb, the males, for the Lord. Everything opening the womb from the herds or among your animals, whatever belongs to you, you shall consecrate the males to the Lord. | 12 you shall also set apart everything opening the womb, the males, for the Lord. Everything opening the womb from the herds or among your animals, whatever belongs to you, you shall consecrate the males to the Lord. |
13 And every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you won’t redeem it, then you shall break his neck; and all the firstborn of man among your children you shall redeem.

15 And it happened, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that Yahweh killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast; therefore I sacrifice to Yahweh all that opens the matrix, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem.’
15 But when Pharaō hardened against sending us out, he killed every firstborn in Aigypt’s land, from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of animals. 16 And it shall be for a token on your hand, and for frontlets between your eyes; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought us forth out of Egypt.”

God Leads the People
17 And it happened, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt.”
17 Now when Pharaō sent out the people, God didn’t lead them the way of the land of Phylistines, because it was near. For God said, “Lest there should be regret by the people when they see war and they should return to Aigypt.” | 17 Now when Pharaō sent out the people, God didn’t lead them the way of the land of Phylistines, because it was near. For God said, “Lest there should be regret by the people when they see war and they should return to Aigypt.” |
18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red Sea; and the sons of Israēl went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.

19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for he had straitly sworn the sons of Israēl, saying, “God will surely visit you; and you shall carry up my bones away hence with you.”
19 And Moses took the bones of Jōsēph with him. For Jōsēph made the sons of Israēl swear an oath, saying, “With a concern the Lord will concern himself with you, and you shall bring my bones there with you.” |
20 And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness.

21 And Yahweh went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night.

22 He didn’t take away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
22 The pillar of cloud during the day and the pillar of fire by night didn’t cease from before all the people. | 22 The pillar of cloud during the day and the pillar of fire by night didn’t cease from before all the people. |
