Chapter 9

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Mixed Marriages

1 Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israēl, and the priests, and the Levites, haven’t separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

1 And when these things were finished, the chiefs approached me, saying, The people of Israēl, and the priests, and the Levites, haven’t separated themselves from the people of the lands in their abominations: the Chananite, the Ethite, the Pherezite, the Jebousite, the Ammonite, the Mōabite, the Moserite, and the Amorite.

2 For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons; so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yes, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this trespass.

2 Because they have married their daughters for themselves and their sons. Thus the set-apart seed was diluted among the nations of the lands, and the hand of the chiefs has been first in this transgression. 2 Because they have married their daughters for themselves and their sons. Thus the set-apart seed was diluted among the nations of the lands, and the hand of the chiefs has been first in this transgression.

3 And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonished.

3 And when I heard this report, I tore my clothes, and trembled, and plucked some of the hairs of my head and of my beard, and sat down speechless. 3 And when I heard this report, I tore my clothes, and trembled, and plucked some of the hairs of my head and of my beard, and sat down speechless.

4 Then were assembled to me everyone who trembled at the words of Elohim of Israēl, because of the transgression of those who had been carried away; and I sat astonished until the evening sacrifice.

4 All who followed the word of the God of Israēl gathered with me on account of the transgression of the captivity; and I sat speechless until the evening sacrifice. 4 All who followed the word of the God of Israēl gathered with me on account of the transgression of the captivity; and I sat speechless until the evening sacrifice.

Prayer of Confession

5 And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell on my knees, and spread out my hands to Yahweh my Elohim.

5 And at the evening sacrifice, I arose from my humiliation. And after I tore my clothes, then I trembled, and I bowed down on my knees, and spread out my hands to the Lord God, 5 And at the evening sacrifice, I arose from my humiliation. And after I tore my clothes, then I trembled, and I bowed down on my knees, and spread out my hands to the Lord God,

6 And said, Oh my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God; for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up to the heavens.

6 and I said, “Oh Lord, I am ashamed and humbled to lift up my face to you because our lawlessnesses have multiplied over our head, and our errors have increased even to heaven. 6 and I said, “Oh Lord, I am ashamed and humbled to lift up my face to you because our lawlessnesses have multiplied over our head, and our errors have increased even to heaven.

7 Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass to this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

7 From the days of our fathers we have been in a great error until this day. And in our lawlessness, we (even our kings, and our sons), have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the nations by sword, and by captivity, and by plunder, and with shame of our face, as at this day. 7 From the days of our fathers we have been in a great error until this day. And in our lawlessness, we (even our kings, and our sons), have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the nations by sword, and by captivity, and by plunder, and with shame of our face, as at this day.

8 And now for a little space grace has been showed from Yahweh our Elohim, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

8 And now our God has dealt mercifully with us, so as to leave us for salvation, and to give us support in the place of his sanctuary, to enlighten our eyes, and to give a little invigorating in our slavery. 8 And now our God has dealt mercifully with us, so as to leave us for salvation, and to give us support in the place of his sanctuary, to enlighten our eyes, and to give a little invigorating in our slavery.

9 For we were bondmen; yet our God hasn’t forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended mercy to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations of it, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

9 For we are slaves, and in our slavery, our Lord God didn’t desert us; and he inclined mercy to us in the sight of the kings of the Persians, to give us invigorating, that they might raise up the house of our God, and restore the deserted places of it, and to give us a fence in Jouda and in Hierousalēm.

10 And now, Oh our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,

10 τί εἴπωμεν, θεὸς ἡμῶν, μετὰ τοῦτο;
10 τί εἴπωμεν, Θεὸς ἡμῶν, μετὰ τοῦτο;
10 What should we say, our God, after this? For we have forsaken your commandments, 10 What should we say, our God, after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,

11 Which you have commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, The land, to which you go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filth of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.

11 which you gave to us by the hand of your servants the prophets, saying, ‛The land, into which you enter to inherit it, is an unstable land among unstable people of the nations in their abomination, which they filled from mouth to mouth with their impurities. 11 which you gave to us by the hand of your servants the prophets, saying, ‛The land, into which you enter to inherit it, is an unstable land among unstable people of the nations in their abomination, which they filled from mouth to mouth with their impurities.

12 Now therefore don’t give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth forever: that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.

12 And now don’t give your daughters to their sons, and don’t take of their daughters for your sons, neither shall you seek their peace or their good forever: that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and bequeath it to your sons forever.’ 12 And now don’t give your daughters to their sons, and don’t take of their daughters for your sons, neither shall you seek their peace or their good forever: that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and bequeath it to your sons forever.’

13 And after all that is come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that you our God have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such deliverance as this;

13

13 And after all that is is coming on us because of our evil deeds, and for our great error, (because there is none like our God) because you have made our lawlessness light and given us salvation. 13 And after all that is is coming on us because of our evil deeds, and for our great error, (because there is none like our God) because you have made our lawlessness light and given us salvation.

14 Should we again break your commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? Wouldn’t you be angry with us till you had consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping?

14 But we returned to scatter your commandments and to intermarry with the peoples of the lands. Don’t be angry with us until destruction, so that there is no remnant or preserved one. 14 But we returned to scatter your commandments and to intermarry with the peoples of the lands. Don’t be angry with us until destruction, so that there is no remnant or preserved one.

15 Oh Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, you are righteous; for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before you in our trespasses; for we cannot stand before you because of this.

15 Oh Lord God of Israēl, you are righteous; because we remain to be survivors, as this day; behold, we are before you in our errors: because we cannot stand before you on this.” 15 Oh Lord God of Israēl, you are righteous; because we remain to be survivors, as this day; behold, we are before you in our errors: because we cannot stand before you on this.”
