Abram Promised a Son
1 After these things the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Fear not, Abram: I am your shield, and your exceeding great reward.”
1 And after these things, the word of the Lord came to Habram in a vision, saying, “Don’t fear, Habram, I am shielding you, your reward will be very great.” | 1 And after these things, the word of the Lord came to Habram in a vision, saying, “Don’t fear, Habram, I am shielding you, your reward will be very great.” |
2 And Abram said, “Adonai Yahweh, what will you give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?”

2 And Habram said, “Master, what will you give me? Whereas I am departing childless, but the son of Masek my female home-born, this Eliezer of Damascus.” | 2 And Habram said, “Master and Lord, what will you give me? Whereas I am departing childless, but the son of Masek my female home-born, this Eliezer of Damascus.” |
3 And Abram said, “Behold, to me you have given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is my heir.”
3 And Habram said, “since you didn’t give me a offspring, my female home-born will become my heir.” | 3 And Habram said, “since you didn’t give me a offspring, my female home-born will become my heir.” |
4 And, behold, the word of Yahweh came to him, saying, “This shall not be your heir; but he who shall come forth out of your own bowels shall be your heir.”
4 And immediately there was a voice of the Lord to him, saying, “This one won’t be your heir; but he who will come out of you, this one will be your heir.” | 4 And immediately there was a voice of the Lord to him, saying, “This one won’t be your heir; but he who will come out of you, this one will be your heir.” |
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, “Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if you be able to number them; and he said to him, So shall your seed be.”

5 And he brought him outside and said to him, “Please look up into the sky and count the stars. If you will be able to determine their total number,” and he said, “Thus will be your offspring.” | 5 And he brought him outside and said to him, “Please look up into the sky and count the stars. If you will be able to determine their total number,” and he said, “Thus will be your offspring.” |
6 And he believed in Yahweh; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
6 And Habram believed in God, and it was counted to him for righteousness. | 6 And Habram believed in God, and it was counted to him for righteousness. |
7 And he said to him, “I am Yahweh who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit it.”
7 And he said to him, “I am Yahweh who brought you out of the country of the Chaldees, so to give you this land to inherit.” | 7 And he said to him, “I am God who brought you out of the country of the Chaldeans, so as to give you this land to inherit.” |
8 And he said, “Adonai Yahweh, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?”
8 And he said, “Master Lord, how will I know that I wiall inherit it?” | 8 And he said, “Master Lord, how will I know that I wiall inherit it?” |
9 And he said to him, “Take me a heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
9 And he said to him, “Get me a three-year old heifer, and a three-year old female goat, and a three-year old ram, and a dove and a pigeon.” | 9 And he said to him, “Get me a three-year old heifer, and a three-year old female goat, and a three-year old ram, and a dove and a pigeon.” |
10 And he took to him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another; but he didn’t divide the birds.
10 So he got all these, and divided them in the middle, and set them opposite to each other, but he didn’t divide the birds. | 10 So he got all these, and divided them in the middle, and set them opposite to each other, but he didn’t divide the birds. |
11 And when the fowls came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
11 And birds came down on the bodies, on the divided parts of them, and Habram sat down by them. | 11 And birds came down on the bodies, on the divided parts of them, and Habram sat down by them. |
12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram; and, lo, a horror of great darkness fell on him.
12 When the sun went down, a trance fell on Habram, and lo! a great dark fear fell on him. | 12 When the sun went down, a trance fell on Habram, and lo! a great dark fear fell on him. |
13 And he said to Abram, “Know of a surety that your seed shall be a stranger in a land that isn’t theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them 400 years;
13 And it was said to Habram, “upon knowing you will know that your offspring will be resident aliens in a land not your own, and they will enslave them, and mistreat them, and humble them 400 years. | 13 And it was said to Habram, “upon knowing you will know that your offspring will be resident aliens in a land not your own, and they will enslave them, and mistreat them, and humble them 400 years. |
14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
14 I will judge the nations which they will serve; but after this they will go out here with much property. | 14 I will judge the nations which they will serve; but after this they will go out here with much property. |
15 And you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.
15 But you will depart to your fathers in peace, buried in a good old age. | 15 But you will depart to your fathers in peace, nourished in a good old age. |
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come here again; for the iniquity of the Amorites isn’t yet full.”
16 And in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the sins of the Amorrites aren’t yet filled up, even until now.” | 16 And in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the sins of the Amorrites aren’t yet filled up, even until now.” |
17 And it happened, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
17 And when the sun was about to set, there was a flame, and look! a smoking oven and lamps of fire, which passed between these divided pieces. | 17 And when the sun was about to set, there was a flame, and look! a smoking oven and lamps of fire, which passed between these divided pieces. |
18 In the same day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram, saying, “Unto your seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.
18 In that day the Lord made a covenant with Habram, saying, “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Aigypt to the great river Euphrates. | 18 In that day the Lord made a covenant with Habram, saying, “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Aigypt to the great river Euphrates. |
