Work Is Ridiculed
1 [M 3:33] But it happened, that when Sanballat heard that we built the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.
1 Now it happened when Sanaballat heard that we were building the wall, that it was grievous to him, and he was very angry, and laughed against the Joudeans. | 1 Now it happened when Sanaballat heard that we were building the wall, that it was grievous to him, and he was very angry, and laughed against the Joudeans. |
2 [M 3:34] And he spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they make an end in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

2 And he said before his brothers “Is this the strength of Somorōn that these Judeans are building the city themselves?” | 2 And he said before his brothers “Is this the strength of Somorōn that these Judeans are building the city themselves? Are they really sacrificing? Are they actually able? Today, will they restore the burned stones after they had become a heap of the land?” |
3 [M 3:35] Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even what they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

3 And Tōbias the Ammanite was near to him, and said to them, “They don’t sacrifice or eat in their place, eh? Won’t a fox go up and break down their stone wall?” | 3 And Tōbias the Ammanite was near to him, and said to them, “They don’t sacrifice or eat in their place, eh? Won’t a fox go up and break down their stone wall?” |
4 [M 3:36] Hear, Oh our God; for we are despised; and turn their reproach on their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity.
4 Hear, Oh our God, because we have become contemptible, return their reproach on their head, and make them contemptible in a land of captivity, | 4 Hear, Oh our God, because we have become contemptible, return their reproach on their head, and make them contemptible in a land of captivity, |
5 [M 3:37] And don’t cover their iniquity, and don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have provoked you to anger before the builders.
5 and don’t cover their iniquity. | 5 and don’t cover their iniquity. |
6 [M 3:38] So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to the half of it; for the people had a mind to work.

7 [M 4:1] But it happened, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,
7 But it happened, when Sanaballat and Tōbia, and the Arabians, and the Ammanites, heard that the height of the walls of Hierousalēm was going up, and that the gaps were beginning to be blocked up, that it appeared very grievous to them. | 7 But it happened, when Sanaballat and Tōbia, and the Arabians, and the Ammanites, heard that the height of the walls of Hierousalēm was going up, and that the gaps were beginning to be blocked up, that it appeared very grievous to them. |
8 [M 4:2] And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
8 Then all of them assembled together, to come ready to fight against Hierousalēm. | 8 And all of them assembled together, to come ready to fight against Hierousalēm, and to make it unseen. |
Discouragement Overcome
9 [M 4:3] Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
9 So we prayed to our God and set advance guards against them day and night, because of their presence. | 9 So we prayed to our God and set advance guards against them day and night, because of their presence. |
10 [M 4:4] And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
10 And Jouda said, “The strength of the enemies is broken, yet there is much dirt, and we won’t be able to build on the wall.” | 10 And Jouda said, “The strength of the enemies is broken, yet there is much dirt, and we won’t be able to build on the wall.” |
11 [M 4:5] And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
11 And they who afflicted us said, “They won’t know, and they won’t see, until we come into their midst, and murder them, and stop the work.” | 11 And they who afflicted us said, “They won’t know, and they won’t see, until we come into their midst, and murder them, and stop the work.” |
12 [M 4:6] And it happened, that when the Jews who dwelt by them came, they said to us ten times, From all places where you shall return to us they will be on you.
12 And it happened, when the Joudeans who lived near them came, they said to us, “They are coming up from every place against us.” | 12 And it happened, when the Joudeans who lived near them came, they said to us, “They are coming up from every place against us.” |
13 [M 4:7] Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
13 So I stationed men in the lowest part of the place behind the wall in the sheltered places. I also stationed the people according to their district, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. | 13 So I stationed men in the lowest part of the place behind the wall in the sheltered places. I also stationed the people according to their district, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. |
14 [M 4:8] And I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Don’t be afraid of them: remember the Lord, who is great and terrible, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
14 And I looked and arose; and said to the men of influence, to the captains, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of their presence. Remember our great and fearsome God, and be ready to fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.” | 14 And I looked and arose; and said to the men of influence, to the captains, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of their presence. Remember our great and fearsome God, and be ready to fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.” |
15 [M 4:9] And it happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, that we returned all of us to the wall, everyone to his work.
15 And it happened, when our enemies heard that it was made known to us, and God had frustrated their plan, that we all returned to the wall, every man to his work. | 15 And it happened, when our enemies heard that it was made known to us, and God had frustrated their plan, that we all returned to the wall, every man to his work. |
16 [M 4:10] And it happened from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
16 And it happened from that day that half of those who had been expelled, did the work, and half of them kept guarding; and there were spears, and shields, and bows, and breast-plates, and rulers behind the whole house of Jouda, | 16 And it happened from that day that half of those who had been expelled, did the work, and half of them kept guarding; and there were spears, and shields, and bows, and breast-plates, and rulers behind the whole house of Jouda, |
17 [M 4:11] They who built on the wall, and they who carried burdens, with those who loaded, everyone with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

17 of the ones building on the wall. And the ones who are carrying the weapons in the buckets, with one hand he did the work and with one he grasped the javelin. | 17 of the ones building on the wall. And the ones who are carrying the weapons in the buckets, with one hand he did the work and with one he grasped the javelin. |
18 [M 4:12] For the builders, everyone had his sword girded by his side, and so built. And he who sounded the trumpet was by me.
18 Now the builders (a man, his sword attached to his hip) built. And the trumpeter with his horn was beside him. | 18 Now the builders (a man, his sword attached to his hip) built. And the trumpeter with his horn was beside him. |
19 [M 4:13] And I said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated on the wall, one far from another.
19 And I said to the influential people, to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “The work is vast and great, and we are scattered on the wall, a man is far away from his brother; | 19 And I said to the influential people, to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “The work is vast and great, and we are scattered on the wall, a man is far away from his brother; |
20 [M 4:14] In what place therefore you hear the sound of the trumpet, resort to that place to us: our God shall fight for us.
20 In whatever place you hear the sound of the horn there, gather to us; and our God will fight for us.” | 20 In whatever place you hear the sound of the horn there, gather to us; and our God will fight for us.” |
21 [M 4:15] So we laboured in the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
21 So we kept doing the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of dawn until the stars came out. | 21 So we kept doing the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of dawn until the stars came out. |
22 [M 4:16] Likewise at the same time said I to the people, Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
22 And at that time I said to the people, “Spend the night in the middle of Hierousalēm, and let the night be an advance guard for you, and the day: work.” | 22 And at that time I said to the people, “Spend the night in the middle of Hierousalēm, and let the night be an advance guard for you, and the day: work.” |
23 [M 4:17] So neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us put off our clothes, except that everyone put them off for washing.
23 And I was there also the men of the advanced guard behind me. And not one man of us was taking off his clothes. | 23 And I was there also the men of the advanced guard behind me. And not one man of us was taking off his clothes. |
