The Burning Bush

1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

1 And Moses was tending the sheep of Jothor, his father-in-law, the priest of Madiam, and he led the sheep beyond the wilderness and came to the mountain, Chōrēb. 1 And Moses was tending the sheep of Jothor, his father-in-law, the priest of Madiam, and he led the sheep beyond the wilderness and came to the mountain, Chōrēb.

2 And the angel of Yahweh appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush wasn’t consumed.

2 Now an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the thorn bush, and he saw that the thorn bush keeps burning with fire, but the bush was not burning up. 2 Now an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the thorn bush, and he saw that the thorn bush keeps burning with fire, but the bush was not burning up.

3 And Moses said, “I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”

3 Then Moses said, “When I pass by, I will look at this great sight, why it is that the bush is not burning up.” 3 Then Moses said, “When I pass by, I will look at this great sight, why it is that the bush is not burning up.”

4 And when Yahweh saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here am I.”

δὲ εἶπεν τί ἐστιν;
δὲ εἶπε· τί ἔστι;
4 Now when the Lord saw that he was approaching to see, the Lord called him from the bush, saying, “Moses, Moses.” And he said, “What is it?” 4 Now when the Lord saw that he was approaching to see, the Lord called him from the bush, saying, “Moses, Moses.” And he said, “What is it?”

5 And he said, “Don’t draw near here: put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground.”

5 And he said, “Don’t approach here! Loose the sandal from your feet! For the place on which you have stood is sacred ground.” 5 And he said, “Don’t approach here! Loose the sandal from your feet! For the place on which you have stood is sacred ground.”

6 Moreover he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacōb.” And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look on God.

6 And he said to him, “I am the God of your father, God of Abraham and God of Isaac and God of Jakōb.” And Moses turned his face away, for he was afraid to look at the presence of God. 6 And he said to him, “I am the God of your father, God of Abraham and God of Isaac and God of Jakōb.” And Moses turned his face away, for he was afraid to look at the presence of God.

7 And Yahweh said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;

7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “When I looked, I saw the affliction of my people in Aigypt, and I have heard their cry because of the taskmasters. For I know their pain.” 7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “When I looked, I saw the affliction of my people in Aigypt, and I have heard their cry because of the taskmasters. For I know their pain.”

8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good land and a large, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

8 And I came down to deliver them from the hand of the Aigyptians and to bring them out of that land and to bring them into a good and spacious land, into a land flowing with milk and honey, into the place of the Chananites and Chettites and Amorrites and Pherezites and Gergesites, and Evaites and Jebousites.

9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the sons of Israēl is come to me; and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

9 And now, look, the cry of the sons of Israēl has come to me, and I have seen the oppression with which the Aigyptians oppress them. 9 And now, look, the cry of the sons of Israēl has come to me, and I have seen the oppression with which the Aigyptians oppress them.

The Mission of Moses

10 Come now therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring forth my people the sons of Israēl out of Egypt.”

10 And now come, let me send you to Pharaō, king of Aigypt, and you will bring my people, the sons of Israēl, out of Aigypt’s land. 10 And now come, let me send you to Pharaō, king of Aigypt, and you will bring my people, the sons of Israēl, out of Aigypt’s land.

11 And Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the sons of Israēl out of Egypt?”

11 καὶ εἶπεν Μωυσῆς πρὸς τὸν θεόν τίς εἰμι, ὅτι πορεύσομαι πρὸς Φαραὼ βασιλέα Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ὅτι ἐξάξω τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου; 11 καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς πρὸς τὸν Θεόν· τίς εἰμι ἐγώ, ὅτι πορεύσομαι πρὸς Φαραὼ βασιλέα Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ὅτι ἐξάξω τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου;
11 And Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaō, king of Aigypt, and that I should bring the sons of Israēl out of Aigypt’s land?” 11 And Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaō, king of Aigypt, and that I should bring the sons of Israēl out of Aigypt’s land?”

12 And he said, “Certainly I will be with you; and this shall be a token to you, that I have sent you. When you have brought forth the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

12 But God spoke to Moses, saying, “I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you that I am sending you. When you have brought my people out of Aigypt, you shall also serve God on this mountain.” 12 But God spoke to Moses, saying, “I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you that I am sending you. When you have brought my people out of Aigypt, you shall also serve God on this mountain.”

13 And Moses said to God, “Behold, when I come to the sons of Israēl, and shall say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you’; and they shall say to me, ‘What is his name?’ What shall I say to them?”

ἐρωτήσουσί με· τί ὄνομα αὐτῷ;
τί ἐρῶ πρὸς αὐτούς;
13 And Moses said to God, “Look, I shall come to the sons of Israēl and shall say to them, ‛The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ they will ask me, ‛What is his name?’ What shall I say to them?” 13 And Moses said to God, “Look, I shall come to the sons of Israēl and shall say to them, ‛The God of our fathers has sent me to you.’ they will ask me, ‛What is his name?’ What shall I say to them?”

14 And God said to Moses, “I am that I am”; and he said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israēl, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”

14 And God said to Moses, “I am The One Who Is.” And he said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israēl, ‛The One Who Is has sent me to you.’ ” 14 And God said to Moses, “I am The One Who Is.” And he said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israēl, ‛The One Who Is has sent me to you.’ ”

15 And God said moreover to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israēl, ‘Yahweh Elohim of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacōb, has sent me to you; this is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.’

15 And God said again to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israēl, ‛The Lord, the God of your fathers, God of Abraham and God of Isaac and God of Jakōb, has sent me to you.’ This is my eternal name and a memorial from generations to generations.” 15 And God said again to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israēl, ‛The Lord, the God of our fathers, God of Abraham and God of Isaac and God of Jakōb, has sent me to you.’ This is my eternal name and a memorial from generations to generations.”

16 Go, and gather the elders of Israēl together, and say to them, ‘Yahweh Elohim of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacōb, appeared to me, saying, “I have surely visited you, and seen what is done to you in Egypt.

16 Therefore, go, and assemble the council of elders of the sons of Israēl, and you shall say to them, “The Lord, the God of your fathers, has appeared to me, God of Abraham and God of Isaac and God of Jakōb, saying, ‛’ By investigation, I myself have investigated you and what has happened to you in Aigypt.” 16 Therefore, go, and assemble the council of elders of the sons of Israēl, and you shall say to them, “The Lord, the God of our fathers, has appeared to me, God of Abraham and God of Isaac and God of Jakōb, saying, By investigation, I myself have investigated you and what has happened to you in Aigypt.”

17 And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.”’

17 And I said, “I will bring you up from the affliction of the Aigyptians into the land of the Chananites and Chettites and Amorrites and Pherezites and Gergesites and Evaites and Jebousites, into a land flowing with milk and honey. 17 And I said, “I will bring you up from the affliction of the Aigyptians into the land of the Chananites and Chettites and Amorrites and Pherezites and Gergesites and Evaites and Jebousites, into a land flowing with milk and honey.

18 And they shall listen to your voice; and you shall come, you and the elders of Israēl, to the king of Egypt, and you shall say to him, ‘Yahweh Elohim of the Hebrews has met with us; and now let’s go, we beseech you, three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to Yahweh our Elohim.’

18 And they will listen to your voice, and you and the council of elders of Israēl shall go in to Pharaō, king of Aigypt, and you shall say to him, ‛The God of the Hebrews has summoned us. Therefore, let us go on a three-day trip into the wilderness in order that we may sacrifice to our God.’ 18 And they will listen to your voice, and you and the council of elders of Israēl shall go in to Pharaō, king of Aigypt, and you shall say to him, ‛The God of the Hebrews has summoned us. Therefore, let us go on a three-day trip into the wilderness in order that we may sacrifice to our God.’

19 And I am sure that the king of Egypt won’t let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.

19 But I know that Pharaō, king of Aigypt, won’t allow you to go, except with a mighty hand. 19 But I know that Pharaō, king of Aigypt, won’t allow you to go, except with a mighty hand.

20 And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst of it; and after that he will let you go.

20 And when I stretch out my hand, I will strike the Aigyptians with all my wonders that I will perform among them, and after these things he will send you away. 20 And when I stretch out my hand, I will strike the Aigyptians with all my wonders that I will perform among them, and after these things he will send you away.

21 And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians; and it will happen, that, when you go, you shall not go empty.

21 And I will give favour to this people before the Aigyptians. Now whenever you depart, you will not go away empty-handed. 21 And I will give favour to this people before the Aigyptians. Now whenever you depart, you will not go away empty-handed.

22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that stays in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons, and on your daughters; and you shall spoil the Egyptians.”

22 But a woman will ask from a neighbor and her tent mate silver and gold articles and clothing, and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters, and you shall plunder the Aigyptians.” 22 But a woman will ask from a neighbor and her tent mate silver and gold articles and clothing, and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters, and you shall plunder the Aigyptians.”
