AlexandrinusVaticanus

Jacōb Meets Rachel

1 Then Jacōb went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

1 And after Jacōb lifted up his feet, he went to the land of the east, to Laban, the son of Bathouēl the Syrian, and the brother of Rhebekka, mother of Jacōb and Hēsau. 1 And after Jacōb lifted up his feet, he went to the land of the east, to Laban, the son of Bathouēl the Syrian, and the brother of Rhebekka, mother of Jacōb and Hēsau.

2 And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks; and a great stone was on the well’s mouth.

2 And he looks, and behold! a well in the plain; and three flocks of sheep were resting there near it, for out of that well they watered the flocks, but there was a great stone at the mouth of the well. 2 And he looks, and behold! a well in the plain; and three flocks of sheep were resting there near it, for out of that well they watered the flocks, but there was a great stone at the mouth of the well.

3 And to that place all the flocks were gathered; and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again on the well’s mouth in its place.

3 And all the flocks were gathered there, and they used to roll away the stone from the mouth of the well, and water the flocks, and return the stone to its place at the mouth of the well. 3 And all the flocks were gathered there, and they used to roll away the stone from the mouth of the well, and water the flocks, and return the stone to its place at the mouth of the well.

4 And Jacōb said to them, “My brothers, where are you from?” And they said, “We are from Haran.”

4 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἰακώβ, ἀδελφοί, πόθεν ἐστὲ ὑμεῖς;
4 εἶπε δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἰακώβ· ἀδελφοί, πόθεν ἐστὲ ὑμεῖς;
4 And Jacōb said to them, “Brothers, where are you from?” and they said, “We are from Charran.” 4 And Jacōb said to them, “Brothers, where are you from?” and they said, “We are from Charran.”

5 And he said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” And they said, “We know him.”

5 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς, γινώσκετε Λαβὰν τὸν υἱὸν Ναχώρ;
5 εἶπε δὲ αὐτοῖς· γινώσκετε Λάβαν τὸν υἱὸν Ναχώρ;
5 And he said to them, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nachōr?” and they said, “We know.” 5 And he said to them, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nachōr?” and they said, “We know.”

6 And he said to them, “Is he well?” And they said, “He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter comes with the sheep.”

6 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς, ὑγιαίνει;
6 εἶπε δὲ αὐτοῖς· ὑγιαίνει;
6 And he said to them, “Is he well?” And they said, “He is well. And look, Rhachēl his daughter was coming with the sheep.” 6 And he said to them, “Is he well?” And they said, “He is well. And look, Rhachēl his daughter was coming with the sheep.”

7 And he said, “Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water the sheep, and go and feed them.”

7 And Jacōb said, “It is still daytime, it is not yet time for the flocks to be gathered together. Water the flocks, depart, and put them to pasture.” 7 And Jacōb said, “It is still daytime, it is not yet time for the flocks to be gathered together. Water the flocks, depart, and put them to pasture.”

8 And they said, “We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and until they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.”

8 And they said, “We can’t until all the shepherds are gathered together, and they will roll away the stone from the mouth of the well, then we will water the flocks.” 8 And they said, “We can’t until all the shepherds are gathered together, and they will roll away the stone from the mouth of the well, then we will water the flocks.”

9 And while he yet spoke with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep; for she kept them.

9 While he was still speaking to them, Rhachēl the daughter of Laban came with her father’s sheep, for she tended her father’s sheep. 9 While he was still speaking to them, Rhachēl the daughter of Laban came with her father’s sheep, for she tended her father’s sheep.

10 And it happened, when Jacōb saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, that Jacōb went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.

10 And it happened when Jacōb saw Rhachēl the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, and after approaching, Jacōb rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well, and watered the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother.

11 And Jacōb kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

11 And Jacōb kissed Rhachēl; and after crying out with his voice, he wept. 11 And Jacōb kissed Rhachēl; and after crying out with his voice, he wept.

12 And Jacōb told Rachel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son; and she ran and told her father.

12 And he told Rhachēl that he is a close relative of her father, and that he is the son of Rhebekka; and after she ran, she reported to her father according to these words. 12 And he told Rhachēl that he is a close relative of her father, and that he is the son of Rhebekka; and after she ran, she reported to her father according to these words.

13 And it happened, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacōb his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

13 And it happened when Laban heard the name of Jacōb, his sister’s son, he ran to meet him, and embraced and kissed him, and brought him into his house; and he told Laban all these things. 13 And it happened when Laban heard the name of Jacōb, his sister’s son, he ran to meet him, and embraced and kissed him, and brought him into his house; and he told Laban all these things.

14 And Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” And he abode with him the space of a month.

14 And Laban said to him, “You are of my bones and of my flesh; and he was with him a month of days.” 14 And Laban said to him, “You are of my bones and of my flesh; and he was with him a month of days.”

15 And Laban said to Jacōb, “Because you are my brother, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?”

15 εἶπεν δὲ Λαβὰν τῷ Ἰακώβ, ὅτι γὰρ ἀδελφός μου εἶ, οὐ δουλεύσεις μοι δωρεάν· ἀπάγγειλόν μοι, τίς μισθός σου ἐστιν. 15 Εἶπε δὲ Λάβαν τῷ Ἰακώβ· ὅτι γὰρ ἀδελφός μου εἶ, οὐ δουλεύσεις μοι δωρεάν· ἀπάγγειλόν μοι, τίς μισθός σου ἐστί;
15 And Laban said to Jacōb, “Because you are my near relative, you shall not serve me for nothing; tell me what is your wage.” 15 And Laban said to Jacōb, “Because you are my near relative, you shall not serve me for nothing; tell me, what is your wage?”

16 And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

16 Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leia, and the name of the younger, Rhachēl. 16 Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leia, and the name of the younger, Rhachēl.

17 Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.

17 And Leia’s eyes were weak. But Rhachēl was well-formed in shape, and beautiful in appearance. 17 And Leia’s eyes were weak. But Rhachēl was well-formed in shape, and beautiful in appearance.

18 And Jacōb loved Rachel; and said, I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.

18 And Jacōb loved Rhachēl, and said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rhachēl.” 18 And Jacōb loved Rhachēl, and said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rhachēl.”

19 And Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.”

19 And Laban said to him, “Better I gave her to you, than I gave her to another man. Dwell with me.” 19 And Laban said to him, “Better I gave her to you, than I gave her to another man. Dwell with me.”

20 And Jacōb served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

20 And Jacōb served for Rhachēl seven years, and they were before him as a few days, because he loved her. 20 And Jacōb served for Rhachēl seven years, and they were before him as a few days, because he loved her.

Laban’s Treachery

21 And Jacōb said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.”

21 And Jacōb said to Laban, “Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my days are fulfilled.” 21 And Jacōb said to Laban, “Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my days are fulfilled.”

22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a marriage-feast. 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a marriage-feast.

23 And it happened in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in to her.

23 And evening came and Laban took his daughter Leia, and brought her in to Jacōb, and Jacōb went in to her. 23 And evening came and he took his daughter Leia, and brought her in to Jacōb, and Jacōb went in to her.

24 And Laban gave to his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for a handmaid.

24 And to his daughter Leia, Laban gave his female servant Zelpha, as a female servant for her. 24 And to his daughter Leia, Laban gave his female servant Zelpha, as a female servant for her.

25 And it happened, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah; and he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Didn’t I serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you beguiled me?”

εἶπεν δὲ Ἰακώβ, τῷ Λαβὰν τί τοῦτο ἐποίησάς μοι;
οὐ περὶ Ῥαχὴλ ἐδούλευσα παρὰ σοί;
καὶ ἵνα τί παρελογίσω με;
εἶπε δὲ Ἰακὼβ τῷ Λάβαν· τί τοῦτο ἐποίησάς μοι;
οὐ περὶ Ῥαχὴλ ἐδούλευσα παρὰ σοί;
καὶ ἱνατί παρελογίσω με;
25 Then morning came, and look! it was Leia; and Jacōb said to Laban, “What is this that you have done to me? Didn’t I serve you for Rhachēl? Why have you deceived me?” 25 Then morning came, and look! it was Leia; and Jacōb said to Laban, “What is this that you have done to me? Didn’t I serve you for Rhachēl? Why have you deceived me?”

26 And Laban said, “It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

26 And Laban said, “To give the younger before the elder is not done this way in our region. 26 And Laban answered, “To give the younger before the elder is not done this way in our region.

27 Fulfill her week, and we will give you this also for the service which you shall serve with me yet seven other years.”

27 Then fulfill the sevens of this one, and I will give this one to you in exchange for your work which you will work with me, for yet another seven years.” 27 Then fulfill the sevens of this one, and I will give this one to you in exchange for your work which you will work with me, for yet another seven years.”

28 And Jacōb did so, and fulfilled her week; and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.

28 And Jacōb did so, and fulfilled this one’s sevens; and Laban gave him his daughter Rhachēl as wife. 28 And Jacōb did so, and fulfilled this one’s sevens; and Laban gave him his daughter Rhachēl as wife.

29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.

29 And to Rhachēl his daughter, Laban gave his female servant Ballan, for a female servant to her. 29 And to his daughter, Laban gave his female servant Ballan, for a female servant to her.

30 And he went in also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.

30 And he went in to Rhachēl; and he loved Rhachēl more than Leia; and he served him another seven years. 30 And he went in to Rhachēl; and he loved Rhachēl more than Leia; and he served him another seven years.

31 And when Yahweh saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

31 Now when the Lord saw that Leia was hated, he opened her womb; but Rhachēl was barren. 31 Now when the Lord God saw that Leia was hated, he opened her womb; but Rhachēl was barren.

32 And Leah conceived, and gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said, “Surely Yahweh has looked on my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.”

32 And Leia conceived and gave birth to a son for Jacōb; and she called his name, Rhoubēn; saying, “Because the Lord has looked on my humiliation, and has given me a son, now then my husband will love me.” 32 And Leia conceived and gave birth to a son for Jacōb; and she called his name, Rhoubēn; saying, “Because the Lord has looked on my humiliation, and has given me a son, now then my husband will love me.”

33 And she conceived again, and gave birth to a son; and said, “Because Yahweh has heard that I was hated, he has therefore given me this son also”; and she called his name Simeon.
