Bildad: God Rewards the Good

1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

1 Then Baldad the Sauchite answered, and said, 1 Then Baldad the Sauchite answered, and said,

2 How long will you speak these things? And how long shall the words of your mouth be like a strong wind?

2 Μέχρι τίνος λαλήσεις ταῦτα;
2 μέχρι τίνος λαλήσεις ταῦτα, πνεῦμα πολυρρῆμον τοῦ στόματός σου;
2 How long will you speak these things, how long shall the breath of your mouth be abundant in words? 2 How long will you speak these things, how long shall the breath of your mouth be abundant in words?

3 Doth God pervert judgment? Or does the Almighty pervert justice?

3 μὴ κύριος ἀδικήσει κρίνων τὰ πάντα ποιήσας ταράξει τὸ δίκαιον; 3 μὴ Κύριος ἀδικήσει κρίνων τὰ πάντα ποιήσας ταράξει τὸ δίκαιον;
3 Will the Lord be unjust when he judges; or will he who has made all things pervert justice? 3 Will the Lord be unjust when he judges; or will he who has made all things pervert justice?

4 If your children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression;

4 If your sons have sinned before him, he has cast them away because of their transgression. 4 If your sons have sinned before him, he has cast them away because of their transgression.

5 If you would seek to God early, and make your supplication to the Almighty;

5 But be early in prayer to the Lord Almighty. 5 But be early in prayer to the Lord Almighty.

6 If you were pure and upright; surely now he would awake for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous.

6 If you are pure and true, he will listen to your supplication, and will restore to you the habitation of righteousness. 6 If you are pure and true, he will listen to your supplication, and will restore to you the habitation of righteousness.

7 Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end should greatly increase.

7 Though then your beginning should be small, yet your end should be unspeakably great. 7 Though then your beginning should be small, yet your end should be unspeakably great.

8 For inquire, please, of the former age, and prepare yourself to the search of their fathers.

8 For ask of the former generation, and search diligently among the race of our fathers. 8 For ask of the former generation, and search diligently among the race of our fathers.

9 (For we are but of yesterday, and didn’t know anything, because our days on earth are a shadow:)

9 (for we are of yesterday, and didn’t know anything; for our life on the earth is a shadow:) 9 (for we are of yesterday, and didn’t know anything; for our life on the earth is a shadow:)

10 Shall not they teach you, and tell you, and utter words out of their heart?

10 οὐχ οὗτοί σὲ διδάξουσιν καὶ ἀναγγελοῦσιν καὶ ἐκ καρδίας ἐξάξουσιν ῥήματα; 10 οὐχ οὗτοί σε διδάξουσι καὶ ἀναγγελοῦσι καὶ ἐκ καρδίας ἐξάξουσι ῥήματα;
10 shall not these teach you, and report to you, and bring out words from their heart? 10 shall not these teach you, and report to you, and bring out words from their heart?

11 Can the rush grow up without mire? Can the flag grow without water?

11 μὴ θάλλει πάπυρος ἄνευ ὕδατος ὑψωθήσεται βούτομον ἄνευ πότου, 11 μὴ θάλλει πάπυρος ἄνευ ὕδατος ὑψωθήσεται βούτομον ἄνευ πότου;
11 Does the rush flourish without water, or shall the flag grow up without moisture? 11 Does the rush flourish without water, or shall the flag grow up without moisture?

12 Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withers before any other herb.

12 ἔτι ὂν ἐπὶ ῥίζης καὶ οὐ μὴ θερισθῇ, πρὸ τοῦ πιεῖν πᾶσα βοτάνη οὐχὶ ξηραίνεται. 12 ἔτι ὂν ἐπὶ ῥίζης καὶ οὐ μὴ θερισθῇ, πρὸ τοῦ πιεῖν πᾶσα βοτάνη οὐχὶ ξηραίνεται;
12 When it is yet on the root, and though it hasn’t been cut down, doesn’t any herb wither before it has received moisture? 12 When it is yet on the root, and though it hasn’t been cut down, doesn’t any herb wither before it has received moisture?

13 So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish.

13 Thus then shall be the end of all that forget the Lord; for the hope of the ungodly shall perish. 13 Thus then shall be the end of all that forget the Lord; for the hope of the ungodly shall perish.

14 Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider’s web.

14 For his house shall be without inhabitants, and his tent shall prove a spider’s web. 14 For his house shall be without inhabitants, and his tent shall prove a spider’s web.

15 He shall lean on his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.

15 If he should prop up his house, it shall not stand; and when he has taken hold of it, it shall not remain. 15 If he should prop up his house, it shall not stand; and when he has taken hold of it, it shall not remain.

16 He is green before the sun, and his branch shoots forth in his garden.

16 For it is moist under the sun, and his branch shall come forth out of his dung-heap. 16 For it is moist under the sun, and his branch shall come forth out of his dung-heap.

17 His roots are wrapped about the heap, and sees the place of stones.

17 He lies down on a gathering of stones, and shall live in the mist of flints. 17 He lies down on a gathering of stones, and shall live in the mist of flints.

18 If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I haven’t seen you.

18 If God should destroy him, his place shall deny him. Have you not seen such things, 18 If God should destroy him, his place shall deny him. Have you not seen such things,

19 Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.

19 that such is the overthrow of the ungodly? And out of the earth another shall grow. 19 that such is the overthrow of the ungodly? And out of the earth another shall grow.

20 Behold, God won’t cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers.

20 For the Lord will by no means reject the harmless man; but he won’t receive any gift of the ungodly. 20 For the Lord will by no means reject the harmless man; but he won’t receive any gift of the ungodly.

21 Till he fill your mouth with laughing, and your lips with rejoicing.

21 But he will fill with laughter the mouth of the sincere, and their lips with thanksgiving. 21 But he will fill with laughter the mouth of the sincere, and their lips with thanksgiving.

22 They who hate you shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nothing.

22 But their adversaries shall clothe themselves with shame; and the habitation of the ungodly shall perish. 22 But their adversaries shall clothe themselves with shame; and the habitation of the ungodly shall perish.
