I Samuel

1 And Yahweh said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israēl? fill your horn with oil, and go, I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.

1 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαμουὴλ ἕως πότε σὺ πενθεῖς ἐπὶ Σαούλ, κἀγὼ ἐξουδένωκα αὐτὸν μὴ βασιλεύειν ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ; πλῆσον τὸ κέρας σου ἐλαίου, καὶ δεῦρο ἀποστείλω σὲ πρὸς Ἰεσσαὶ ἕως εἰς Βηθλεέμ, ὅτι ἑόρακα ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτοῦ ἐμοὶ βασιλεύειν.	1 Καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς Σαμουήλ· ἕως πότε σὺ πενθεῖς ἐπὶ Σαούλ, κἀγὼ ἐξουδένωκα αὐτὸν μὴ βασιλεύειν ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ; πλῆσον τὸ κέρας σου ἐλαίου, καὶ δεῦρο ἀποστείλω σε πρὸς Ἰεσσαὶ ἕως Βηθλεέμ, ὅτι ἑώρακα ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτοῦ ἐμοὶ βασιλέα.
1 And the Lord said to Samouēl, “How long are you grieving over Saoul and I have distained him not to be king over Israēl? 2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he Will kill me. And Yahweh said, Take a heifer with you, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Yahweh.

2 καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουὴλ πῶς πορευθῶ; καὶ ἀκούσεται Σαοὺλ καὶ ἀποκτενεῖ με. καὶ εἶπεν κύριος δάμαλιν βοῶν λαβὲ ἐν τῇ χειρί σου καὶ ἐρεῖς θῦσαι τῷ κυρίῳ ἥκω·	2 καὶ εἶπε Σαμουήλ· πῶς πορευθῶ; καὶ ἀκούσεται Σαοὺλ καὶ ἀποκτενεῖ με. καὶ εἶπε Κύριος· δάμαλιν βοῶν λαβὲ ἐν τῇ χειρί σου καὶ ἐρεῖς· θῦσαι τῷ Κυρίῳ ἥκω·
2 And Samouēl said, “How could I to go? Saoul will both hear and kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer of the oxen in your hand, and you will say, ‘I have came to sacrifice to the Lord,’	2 And Samouēl said, “How could I to go? 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.

3 καὶ καλέσεις τὸν Ἰεσσαὶ εἰς τὴν θυσίαν, καὶ γνωριῶ σοί ἃ ποιήσεις, καὶ χρίσεις ὃν ἐὰν εἴπω πρὸς σέ.	3 καὶ καλέσεις τὸν Ἰεσσαὶ εἰς τὴν θυσίαν, καὶ γνωριῶ σοι ἃ ποιήσεις, καὶ χρίσεις ὃν ἄν εἴπω πρός σε.

4 And Samuel did what Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest you peaceably?

4 καὶ ἐποίησεν Σαμουὴλ πάντα, ἃ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ κύριος, καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθλεέμ. καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τῆς πόλεως τῇ ἀπαντήσει αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν εἰρήνη ἡ εἴσοδός σου, ὁ βλέπων;	4 καὶ ἐποίησε Σαμουὴλ πάντας, ἃ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ Κύριος, καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθλεέμ. καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τῆς πόλεως τῇ ἀπαντήσει αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν· εἰρήνη ἡ εἴσοδός σου, ὁ βλέπων;
4 And Samouēl did all that the Lord spoke to him and came to Bethleem. 5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice to Yahweh: consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

5 καὶ εἶπεν· εἰρήνη θῦσαι τῷ κυρίῳ ἥκω, ἁγιάσθητε καὶ εὐφράνθητε μετ’ ἐμοῦ σήμερον. καὶ ἡγίασεν τὸν Ἰεσσαὶ καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν θυσίαν.	5 καὶ εἶπε· εἰρήνη· θῦσαι τῷ Κυρίῳ ἥκω, ἁγιάσθητε καὶ εὐφράνθητε μετ’ ἐμοῦ σήμερον, καὶ ἡγίασε τὸν Ἰεσσαὶ καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν θυσίαν.

6 And it happened, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Yahweh’s anointed is before him.

6 καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ αὐτοὺς εἰσιέναι καὶ εἶδεν τὸν Ἐλιὰβ καὶ εἶπεν ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐνώπιον κυρίου χριστὸς αὐτοῦ.	6 καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ εἰσιέναι αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶδε τὸν Ἐλιὰβ καὶ εἶπε· ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐνώπιον Κυρίου χριστὸς αὐτοῦ.

7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him; for Yahweh sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks on the heart.

7 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαμουὴλ μὴ ἐπιβλέψῃς ἐπὶ τὴν ὄψιν αὐτοῦ μηδὲ εἰς τὴν ἕξιν μεγέθους αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐξουδένωκα αὐτόν· ὅτι οὐχ ὡς ἐμβλέψεται ἄνθρωπος, ὄψεται ὁ θεός, ὅτι ἄνθρωπος ὄψεται εἰς πρόσωπον, ὁ δὲ θεὸς ὄψεται εἰς καρδίαν.	7 καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς Σαμουήλ· μὴ ἐπιβλέψῃς ἐπὶ τὴν ὄψιν αὐτοῦ μηδὲ εἰς τὴν ἕξιν μεγέθους αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐξουδένωκα αὐτόν· ὅτι οὐχ ὡς ἐμβλέψεται ἄνθρωπος, ὄψεται ὁ Θεός, ὅτι ἄνθρωπος ὄψεται εἰς πρόσωπον, ὁ δὲ Θεὸς ὄψεται εἰς καρδίαν.

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has Yahweh chosen this.

8 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἰεσσαὶ τὸν Ἀμιναδάβ, καὶ παρῆλθεν κατὰ πρόσωπον Σαμουήλ· καὶ εἶπεν οὐδὲ τοῦτον ἐξελέξατο κύριος.	8 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἰεσσαὶ τὸν Ἀμιναδάβ, καὶ παρῆλθε κατὰ πρόσωπον Σαμουήλ, καὶ εἶπε· οὐδὲ τοῦτον ἐξελέξατο ὁ Θεός.

9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither has Yahweh chosen this.

10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, Yahweh hasn’t chosen these.

11 And Samuel said to Jesse, Are here all your children? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, and, behold, he keeps the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we won’t sit down till he come here.

11 And Samouēl said to Jessai, “Have the youths come to an end?” And he said, “There is yet the least; look! he is shepherding among the flock.” And Samouēl said to Jessai, “Send, and take him; for we will definitely not recline at table until he comes.”	11 And Samouēl said to Jessai, “Have the youths come to an end?” And he said, “There is yet the least; look! he is shepherding among the flock.” And Samouēl said to Jessai, “Send, and take him; for we will definitely not recline at table until he comes.”

12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and in addition of a beautiful countenance, and good to look to. And Yahweh said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

12 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτόν· καὶ οὗτος πυρράκης μετὰ κάλλους ὀφθαλμῶν καὶ ἀγαθὸς ὁράσει κυρίῳ· καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαμουὴλ ἀνάστα καὶ χρῖσον τὸν Δαυίδ, ὅτι οὗτος ἀγαθός ἐστιν.	12 καὶ ἀπέστειλε καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτόν· καὶ αὐτὸς πυρράκης μετὰ κάλλους ὀφθαλμῶν καὶ ἀγαθὸς ὁράσει Κυρίῳ. καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς Σαμουήλ· ἀνάστα καὶ χρῖσον τὸν Δαυίδ, ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀγαθός.
12 And he sent and brought him in. And this one was ruddy with beauty of eyes and was good in appearance to the Lord. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of Yahweh came on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

13 καὶ ἔλαβεν Σαμουὴλ τὸ κέρας τοῦ ἐλαίου καὶ ἔχρισεν αὐτὸν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐφήλατο πνεῦμα κυρίου ἐπὶ Δαυὶδ ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης καὶ ἐπάνω. καὶ ἀνέστη Σαμουὴλ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς Ἀρμαθαίμ.	13 καὶ ἔλαβε Σαμουὴλ τὸ κέρας τοῦ ἐλαίου καὶ ἔχρισεν αὐτὸ ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐφήλατο πνεῦμα Κυρίου ἐπὶ Δαυὶδ ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης καὶ ἐπάνω. καὶ ἀνέστη Σαμουὴλ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς Ἀρμαθαίμ.
13 And Samouēl took the horn of olive oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers, and a spirit of the Lord leaped on David from that day and onward. 14 But the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him.

15 And Saul’s servants said to him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.

15 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ παῖδες Σαοὺλ πρὸς αὐτόν ἰδοὺ δὴ πνεῦμα κυρίου πονηρὸν πνίγει σε·	15 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ παῖδες Σαοὺλ πρὸς αὐτόν· ἰδοὺ δὴ πνεῦμα Κυρίου πονηρὸν πνίγει σε·
15 And Saoul’s servants said to him, “Please look! an evil spirit from the Lord is vexing you.	15 And Saoul’s servants said to him, “Please look! an evil spirit from the Lord is vexing you.

16 Let our lord now command your servants, which are before you, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on a harp; and it will happen, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well.

16 εἰπάτωσαν δὴ οἱ δοῦλοί σου ἐνώπιόν σου καὶ ζητησάτωσαν τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν ἄνδρα εἰδότα ψάλλειν ἐν κινύρᾳ, καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῷ εἶναι πνεῦμα πονηρὸν ἐπὶ σοί καὶ ψαλεῖ ἐν τῇ κινύρᾳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀγαθόν σοί ἔσται, καὶ ἀναπαύσει σε.	16 εἰπάτωσαν δὴ οἱ δοῦλοί σου ἐνώπιόν σου, καὶ ζητησάτωσαν τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν ἄνδρα εἰδότα ψάλλειν ἐν κινύρᾳ, καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῷ εἶναι πνεῦμα πονηρὸν ἐπί σοι καὶ ψαλῇ ἐν τῇ κινύρᾳ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀγαθόν σοι ἔσται καὶ ἀναπαύσει σε.

17 And Saul said to his servants, Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.

17 καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ ἴδετε δή μοι ἄνδρα ὀρθῶς ψάλλοντα καὶ εἰσαγάγετε αὐτὸν πρὸς ἐμέ.	17 καὶ εἶπε Σαοὺλ πρὸς τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ· ἴδετε δή μοι ἄνδρα ὀρθῶς ψάλλοντα καὶ εἰσαγάγετε αὐτὸν πρός με.

18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and Yahweh is with him.

18 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη εἷς τῶν παιδαρίων αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἑόρακα υἱὸν τῷ Ἰεσσαὶ Βηθλεεμίτην καὶ αὐτὸν εἰδότα ψαλμόν, καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ συνετός, καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ πολεμιστὴς καὶ σοφὸς λόγῳ καὶ ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς τῷ εἴδει, καὶ κύριος μετ’ αὐτοῦ.	18 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη εἷς τῶν παιδαρίων αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπε· ἰδοὺ ἑώρακα υἱὸν τῷ Ἰεσσαὶ Βηθλεεμίτην καὶ αὐτὸν εἰδότα ψαλμόν, καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ συνετὸς καὶ πολεμιστὴς καὶ σοφὸς λόγῳ, καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς τῷ εἴδει, καὶ Κύριος μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
18 And one of his youths answered and said, “Look! I have seen a son of Jessai a Bethleemite, and he knows how to play music, and the man is intelligent, and the man is a warrior and wise with words, and a man good in appearance, and the Lord is with him.”	18 And one of his youths answered and said, “Look! 19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, Send me David your son, which is with the sheep.

20 And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son to Saul.

21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

21 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Δαυὶδ πρὸς Σαοὺλ καὶ παρειστήκει ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἠγάπησεν αὐτὸν σφόδρα, καὶ ἐγενήθη αὐτῷ αἴρων τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ.	21 καὶ εἰσῆλθε Δαυὶδ πρὸς Σαοὺλ καὶ παρειστήκει ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἠγάπησεν αὐτὸν σφόδρα, καὶ ἐγενήθη αὐτῷ αἴρων τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ.
