1 And Yahweh said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israēl? fill your horn with oil, and go, I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.

1 And the Lord said to Samouēl, “How long are you grieving over Saoul and I have distained him not to be king over Israēl? Fill your horn with olive oil, and come, let me send you to Jessai as far as to Bēthleem, because I have seen among his sons someone to be king for me.” | 1 And the Lord said to Samouēl, “How long are you grieving over Saoul and I have distained him not to be king over Israēl? Fill your horn with olive oil, and come, let me send you to Jessai as far as to Bēthleem, because I have seen among his sons someone to be king for me.” |
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he Will kill me. And Yahweh said, Take a heifer with you, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Yahweh.
2
καὶ

πῶς

2 And Samouēl said, “How could I to go? Saoul will both hear and kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer of the oxen in your hand, and you will say, ‘I have came to sacrifice to the Lord,’ | 2 And Samouēl said, “How could I to go? Saoul will both hear and kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer of the oxen in your hand, and you will say, ‘I have came to sacrifice to the Lord,’ |
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.
3 and you shall call Jessai to the sacrifice, and I will inform you what you shall do, and you shall anoint whomever I say to you.” | 3 and you shall call Jessai to the sacrifice, and I will inform you what you shall do, and you shall anoint whomever I say to you.” |
4 And Samuel did what Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest you peaceably?
4
καὶ
ἃ
καὶ
εἰς
4 And Samouēl did all that the Lord spoke to him and came to Bethleem. And the elders of the city were amazed at meeting him and said, “Is your entrance peace, Oh seer?” | 4 And Samouēl did all that the Lord spoke to him and came to Bethleem. And the elders of the city were amazed at meeting him and said, “Is your entrance peace, Oh seer?” |
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice to Yahweh: consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
5
καὶ
τῷ
ἥκω,
καὶ
μετ’
5 And he said, “Peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; consecrate yourselves and be glad with me today.” And he consecrated Jessai and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. | 5 And he said, “Peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; consecrate yourselves and be glad with me today.” And he consecrated Jessai and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. |
6 And it happened, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Yahweh’s anointed is before him.
6 And it happened, when they entered, and he looked on Eliab that he said, “Yes! His anointed is before the Lord.” | 6 And it happened, when they entered, and he looked on Eliab that he said, “Yes! His anointed is before the Lord.” |
7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him; for Yahweh sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks on the heart.
7 And the Lord said to Samouēl, “Don't start looking on his appearance or on the greatness of his physique, because I have distained him, for God will not look as a man will see, for a man will see into a face, but God will see into a heart.” | 7 And the Lord said to Samouēl, “Don't start looking on his appearance or on the greatness of his physique, because I have distained him, for God will not look as a man will see, for a man will see into a face, but God will see into a heart.” |
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has Yahweh chosen this.
8 And Jessai called Aminadab, and he passed before Samouēl. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” | 8 And Jessai called Aminadab, and he passed before Samouēl. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” |
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither has Yahweh chosen this.
9 And Jessai brought forward Sama. And he said, “The Lord has not chosen this one also.” | 9 And Jessai brought forward Sama. And he said, “The Lord has not chosen this one also.” |
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, Yahweh hasn’t chosen these.
10 And Jessai brought his seven sons before Samouēl, and Samouēl said, “The Lord has not chosen among these.” | 10 And Jessai brought his seven sons before Samouēl, and Samouēl said, “The Lord has not chosen among these.” |
11 And Samuel said to Jesse, Are here all your children? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, and, behold, he keeps the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we won’t sit down till he come here.
11

11 And Samouēl said to Jessai, “Have the youths come to an end?” And he said, “There is yet the least; look! he is shepherding among the flock.” And Samouēl said to Jessai, “Send, and take him; for we will definitely not recline at table until he comes.” | 11 And Samouēl said to Jessai, “Have the youths come to an end?” And he said, “There is yet the least; look! he is shepherding among the flock.” And Samouēl said to Jessai, “Send, and take him; for we will definitely not recline at table until he comes.” |
David Anointed
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and in addition of a beautiful countenance, and good to look to. And Yahweh said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

12 And he sent and brought him in. And this one was ruddy with beauty of eyes and was good in appearance to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samouēl, “Rise, and anoint David; for this one is good.” | 12 And he sent and brought him in. And this one was ruddy with beauty of eyes and was good in appearance to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samouēl, “Rise, and anoint David; for this one is good.” |
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of Yahweh came on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

13 And Samouēl took the horn of olive oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers, and a spirit of the Lord leaped on David from that day and onward. And Samouēl rose and returned to Armathaim. | 13 And Samouēl took the horn of olive oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers, and a spirit of the Lord leaped on David from that day and onward. And Samouēl rose and returned to Armathaim. |
14 But the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him.
14 And a spirit of the Lord departed from Saoul, and an evil spirit from the Lord vexed him. | 14 And a spirit of the Lord departed from Saoul, and an evil spirit from the Lord vexed him. |
15 And Saul’s servants said to him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.
15 And Saoul’s servants said to him, “Please look! an evil spirit from the Lord is vexing you. | 15 And Saoul’s servants said to him, “Please look! an evil spirit from the Lord is vexing you. |
16 Let our lord now command your servants, which are before you, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on a harp; and it will happen, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well.
16 Please let your slaves speak before you, and let them seek for our master a man who has learned how to play on a kinnor, and it will be, when an evil spirit is on you, that he will play on his kinnor, and it will be good for you, and it will give you calm.” | 16 Please let your slaves speak before you, and let them seek for our master a man who has learned how to play on a kinnor, and it will be, when an evil spirit is on you, that he will play on his kinnor, and it will be good for you, and it will give you calm.” |
17 And Saul said to his servants, Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.
17 And Saoul said to his servants, “Please look out for me for a man who plays well, and bring him to me.” | 17 And Saoul said to his servants, “Please look out for me for a man who plays well, and bring him to me.” |
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and Yahweh is with him.
18 And one of his youths answered and said, “Look! I have seen a son of Jessai a Bethleemite, and he knows how to play music, and the man is intelligent, and the man is a warrior and wise with words, and a man good in appearance, and the Lord is with him.” | 18 And one of his youths answered and said, “Look! I have seen a son of Jessai a Bethleemite, and he knows how to play music, and the man is intelligent, and the man is a warrior and wise with words, and a man good in appearance, and the Lord is with him.” |
19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, Send me David your son, which is with the sheep.
19 And Saoul sent messengers to Jessai, saying, “Send me your son David who is with your flock.” | 19 And Saoul sent messengers to Jessai, saying, “Send me your son David who is with your flock.” |
20 And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son to Saul.
20 And Jessai took a homer of bread and a skin of wine and one kid of the goats and sent them by the hand of his son David to Saoul. | 20 And Jessai took a homer of bread and a skin of wine and one kid of the goats and sent them by the hand of his son David to Saoul. |
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
21 And David came in to Saoul and stood before him. And Saoul loved him greatly, and he became his armour bearer. | 21 And David came in to Saoul and stood before him. And Saoul loved him greatly, and he became his armour bearer. |
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, please, stand before me; for he has found favour in my sight.
22 And Saoul sent to Jessai, saying, “Please let David stand before me, because he has found favour in my eyes.” | 22 And Saoul sent to Jessai, saying, “Please let David stand before me, because he has found favour in my eyes.” |
23 And it happened, when the evil spirit from God was on Saul, that David took a harp, and played with his hand; so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
