Atonement for an Unsolved Murder

1 “If someone is found slain in the land which Yahweh your Elohim gives you to possess, lying in the field, and it isn’t known who has slain him,

1 Now if someone wounded is found on the land that your Lord God is giving you to inherit, having fallen on the plain and they didn’t know the one hitting, 1 Now if someone wounded is found on the land that your Lord God is giving you to inherit, having fallen on the plain and they didn’t know the one hitting,

2 then your elders and your judges shall come forth, and they shall measure to the cities which are all around him who is slain.

2 your eldership and your judges shall come out and measure out to the cities that surround the wounded. 2 your eldership and your judges shall come out and measure out to the cities that surround the wounded.

3 And it shall be, that the city which is nearest to the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer, which hasn’t been worked, and which hasn’t pulled in a yoke;

3 And it shall be the city nearest the wounded, and the eldership of that city shall take a heifer from the cows that has not been worked and which has not pulled a yoke, 3 And it shall be the city nearest the wounded, and the eldership of that city shall take a heifer from the cows that has not been worked and which has not pulled a yoke,

4 and the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer to a rough valley, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer’s neck there in the valley.

4 and the eldership of that city shall lead the heifer down to a rugged valley, which is neither worked nor sown, and shall hamstring the heifer in the valley. 4 and the eldership of that city shall lead the heifer down to a rugged valley, which is neither worked nor sown, and shall hamstring the heifer in the valley.

5 And the priests, the sons of Levi shall come near; for them Yahweh your Elohim has chosen to minister to him, and to bless in the name of Yahweh; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried.

5 And the Levitical priests, shall approach, because your Lord God has chosen them to stand by him and to bless in his name, and by their mouth every dispute and every injury shall be. 5 And the Levitical priests, shall approach, because your Lord God has chosen them to stand by him and to bless in his name, and by their mouth every dispute and every injury shall be.

6 And all the elders of that city, that are next to the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley.

6 And the entire eldership of that city, those nearest the wounded, shall wash their hands over the head of the heifer that was hamstrung in the valley, 6 And the entire eldership of that city, those nearest the wounded, shall wash their hands over the head of the heifer that was hamstrung in the valley,

7 And they shall answer and say, Our hands haven’t shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.

7 and after answering, they shall say; “Our hands didn’t shed this blood, and our eyes haven’t seen. 7 and after answering, they shall say; “Our hands didn’t shed this blood, and our eyes haven’t seen.

8 Be merciful, Oh Yahweh, to your people Israēl, whom you have redeemed, and don’t lay innocent blood to your people of Israēl’s charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them.

8 Be merciful to your people Israēl, whom you redeemed, Oh Lord, out of the land of Aigypt, in order that innocent blood may not be among your people Israēl.” And the blood will be propitiated for them. 8 Be merciful to your people Israēl, whom you redeemed, Oh Lord, in order that innocent blood may not be among your people Israēl.” And the blood will be propitiated for them.

9 So you shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when you shall do what is right in the sight of Yahweh.

9 But you shall remove innocent blood from yourselves, if you do what is good and pleasing in the sight of your Lord God. 9 But you shall remove innocent blood from yourselves, if you do what is good and pleasing in the sight of your Lord God.

Marrying a Captive Woman

10 When you go forth to war against your enemies, and Yahweh your Elohim has delivered them into your hands, and you have taken them captive,

10 Now when going out to war against your enemies and your Lord God delivers them into your hands and you take as plunder their spoil 10 Now when going out to war against your enemies and your Lord God delivers them into your hands and you take as plunder their spoil

11 and see among the captives a beautiful woman, and have a desire for her, that you would have her to be your wife;

11 and you see among the spoil a woman, beautiful in appearance, and you desire her and take her for yourself as a wife, 11 and you see among the spoil a woman, beautiful in appearance, and you desire her and take her for yourself as a wife,

12 then you shall bring her home to your house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;

12 then you shall bring her inside your home, and you shall shave her head and pare her nails, 12 then you shall bring her inside your home, and you shall shave her head and pare her nails,

13 and she shall put the clothing of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in your house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month; and after that you shall go in to her, and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.

13 and you shall remove her clothes of captivity from her, and she shall settle in your home and mourn for her father and her mother for a month of days, and after them you shall go in to her and live together with her, and she shall be your wife. 13 and you shall remove her clothes of captivity from her, and she shall settle in your home and mourn for her father and her mother for a month of days, and after them you shall go in to her and live together with her, and she shall be your wife.

14 And it shall be, if you have no delight in her, then you shall let her go wherever she wants; but you shall not sell her at all for money, you shall not make merchandise of her, because you have humbled her.

14 And it shall be, if you don’t want her, you shall send her away free, and by a sale she shall not be sold for money. You shall not break a promise with her, since you have humbled her. 14 And it shall be, if you don’t want her, you shall send her away free, and by a sale she shall not be sold for money. You shall not break a promise with her, since you have humbled her.

Right of the Firstborn

15 If a man has two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son is hers who was hated.

15 Now if a man has two wives, one of them loved and one of them hated, and if both the loved and the hated bear him children and the firstborn son is of the one who is hated, 15 Now if a man has two wives, one of them loved and one of them hated, and if both the loved and the hated bear him children and the firstborn son is of the one who is hated,

16 Then it shall be, when he makes his sons inherit what he has, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn.

16 then it shall be, on the day when he bequeaths his possessions to his sons, he shall not be able to treat the son of the loved as the firstborn by ignoring the son of the hated who is the firstborn. 16 then it shall be, on the day when he bequeaths his possessions to his sons, he shall not be able to treat the son of the loved as the firstborn by ignoring the son of the hated who is the firstborn.

17 But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he has; for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

17 But, he shall recognize the firstborn son of the one who is hated by giving him a double portion of all things which he is found to have, because he is the first issue of his children and to this one belongs the right of the firstborn. 17 But, he shall recognize the firstborn son of the one who is hated by giving him a double portion of all things which he is found to have, because he is the first issue of his children and to this one belongs the right of the firstborn.

Rebellious Son

18 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who won’t obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, won’t listen to them,

18 Now if someone has a disobedient and rebellious son who doesn’t obey the voice of his father and the voice of his mother, and they discipline him, and he doesn’t listen to them, 18 Now if someone has a disobedient and rebellious son who doesn’t obey the voice of his father and the voice of his mother, and they discipline him, and he doesn’t listen to them,

19 Then shall his father and his mother seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city, and to the gate of his place;

19 then after seizing him, his father and his mother shall also bring him out to the eldership of his city and to the gate of his place. 19 then after seizing him, his father and his mother shall also bring him out to the eldership of his city and to the gate of his place.

20 and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he won’t obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.’

20 And they shall say to the men of his city, “This son of ours is disobedient and provocative. He doesn’t obey our voice. Being given to feasting, he is a drunkard.” 20 And they shall say to the men of his city, “This son of ours is disobedient and provocative. He doesn’t obey our voice. Being given to feasting, he is a drunkard.”

21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he dies; so you shall put evil away from among you; and all Israēl shall hear, and fear.

21 And the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die. And you shall remove the evil one from yourselves and the others, when they hear, will be afraid. 21 And the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die. And you shall remove the evil one from yourselves and the others, when they hear, will be afraid.

22 And if a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,

22 Now if there is in someone sin, a judgment of death, and he dies and you hang him on a tree, 22 Now if there is in someone sin, a judgment of death, and he dies and you hang him on a tree,

23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall certainly bury him that day; (for he who is hanged is accursed of God;) that your land isn’t defiled, which Yahweh your Elohim gives you for an inheritance.”

23 his body shall not spend the night on the tree, but with burial you shall bury him that same day, because anyone hanging on a tree has been cursed by a god. And you shall not defile the land that your Lord God is giving you as an allotment. 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall by all means bury it in that day; for everyone who is hanged on a tree is cursed of God; and you shall by no means defile the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance.
