1 “When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, and chariots, and a people more than you, don’t be afraid of them; for Yahweh your Elohim is with you, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
1 Now if you go out to war against your enemies and see horse and rider and a people more numerous than you, you shall not be afraid of them, because your Lord God is with you, who made you go up from the land of Aigypt. | 1 Now if you go out to war against your enemies and see horse and rider and a people more numerous than you, you shall not be afraid of them, because your Lord God is with you, who made you go up from the land of Aigypt. |
2 And it shall be, when you are come near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

3 and shall say to them, ‘Hear, Oh Israēl, you approach this day to battle against your enemies; don’t let your hearts faint, don’t fear, and don’t tremble, neither be terrified because of them;

Let your heart not be undone; don’t be afraid, nor be shattered, nor turn aside from before them, | 3 and say to them; “Hear, Oh Israēl! Today you are advancing into battle against your enemies. Let your heart not be undone; don’t be afraid, nor be shattered, nor turn aside from before them, |
4 for Yahweh your Elohim is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’

5 And the officers shall speak to the people, saying, ‘What man is there who has built a new house, and hasn’t dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicates it.

11 If they respond peaceably to you and open to you, it shall be that all the people found in it shall be bearers of tribute and be subject to you. | 11 If they respond peaceably to you and open to you, it shall be that all the people found in it shall be bearers of tribute and be subject to you. |
12 And if it won’t make peace with you, but wants to make war against you, then you shall besiege it.
12 But if they don’t respond to you and make war against you, then you shall besiege it, | 12 But if they don’t respond to you and make war against you, then you shall besiege it, |
13 And when Yahweh your Elohim has delivered it into your hands, you shall smite every male of it with the edge of the sword.
13 and your Lord God will deliver it into your hands, and you shall strike every male in it with slaughter by dagger, | 13 and your Lord God will deliver it into your hands, and you shall strike every male in it with slaughter by dagger, |
14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil of it, you shall take to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which Yahweh your Elohim has given you.
14 except the women and the baggage. And all the livestock and all the things which are[1]in the city and you shall take all the spoil as plunder for yourself, and you shall eat all the plunder of your enemies, which your Lord God is giving you. | 14 except the women and the baggage. And all the livestock and all the things which are[1]in the city and you shall take all the spoil as plunder for yourself, and you shall eat all the plunder of your enemies, which your Lord God is giving you. |
15 Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.
15 Thus you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not of the cities of these nations. | 15 Thus you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not of the cities of these nations. |
16 But of the cities of these people, which Yahweh your Elohim gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes.
16 But look, of the cities of these nations that your Lord God is giving you to inherit their land, you shall not let anything of them that breathes remain alive. | 16 But look, of the cities of these nations that your Lord God is giving you to inherit their land, you shall not let anything of them that breathes remain alive. |
17 But you shall utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as Yahweh your Elohim has commanded you.
17 But with anathema, you shall anathematize them; the Chettite and the Amorrite and the Chananite and the Pherezite and the Heuite and the Jebusite and the Gergesite just as your Lord God has commanded you, | 17 But with anathema, you shall anathematize them; the Chettite and the Amorrite and the Chananite and the Pherezite and the Heuite and the Jebusite and the Gergesite just as your Lord God has commanded you, |
18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so should you sin against Yahweh your Elohim.
18 lest they teach you to do all their abominations that they did for their gods and you sin before your Lord God. | 18 lest they teach you to do all their abominations that they did for their gods and you sin before your Lord God. |
19 When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy the trees of it by forcing an axe against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege.
