Deuteronomy

1 “When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, and chariots, and a people more than you, don’t be afraid of them; for Yahweh your Elohim is with you, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

1 Ἐὰν δὲ ἐξέλθῃς εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου καὶ ἴδῃς ἵππον καὶ ἀναβάτην καὶ λαὸν πλείονά σου, οὐ φοβηθήσῃ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν, ὅτι κύριος ὁ θεός σου μετὰ σου ὁ ἀναβιβάσας σὲ ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου.	1 Ἐὰν δὲ ἐξέλθῃς εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου καὶ ἴδῃς ἵππον καὶ ἀναβάτην καὶ λαὸν πλείονά σου, οὐ φοβηθήσῃ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν, ὅτι Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου μετὰ σοῦ ὁ ἀναβιβάσας σε ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου.

2 And it shall be, when you are come near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

3 and shall say to them, ‘Hear, Oh Israēl, you approach this day to battle against your enemies; don’t let your hearts faint, don’t fear, and don’t tremble, neither be terrified because of them;

3 and say to them; “Hear, Oh Israēl! Today you are advancing into battle against your enemies. 4 for Yahweh your Elohim is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’

5 And the officers shall speak to the people, saying, ‘What man is there who has built a new house, and hasn’t dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicates it.

8 And the officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, ‘What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest the heart of his brothers faint as well as his own heart.’

8 And the scribes shall continue to speak to the people and will say, “Who is the man fearful and cowardly in heart? 9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

10 When you come near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

11 And it shall be, if it gives you an answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found in it shall be tributaries to you, and they shall serve you.

12 And if it won’t make peace with you, but wants to make war against you, then you shall besiege it.

13 And when Yahweh your Elohim has delivered it into your hands, you shall smite every male of it with the edge of the sword.

14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil of it, you shall take to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which Yahweh your Elohim has given you.

15 Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

15 οὕτως ποιήσεις πάσας τὰς πόλεις τὰς μακρὰν οὔσας ἀπὸ σου σφόδρα, αἳ οὐχὶ ἐκ τῶν πόλεων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων,	15 οὕτω ποιήσεις πάσας τὰς πόλεις τὰς μακρὰν οὔσας σου σφόδρα, αἱ οὐχὶ ἐκ τῶν πόλεων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων, ὧν Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου δίδωσί σοι κληρονομεῖν τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν.

17 But you shall utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as Yahweh your Elohim has commanded you.

18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so should you sin against Yahweh your Elohim.

19 When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy the trees of it by forcing an axe against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege.

19 ἐὰν δὲ περικαθίσῃς περὶ πόλιν ἡμέρας πλείους ἐκπολεμῆσαι αὐτὴν εἰς κατάλημψιν αὐτῆς, οὐχὶ ἐξολεθρεύσεις τὰ δένδρα αὐτῆς ἐπιβαλεῖν ἐπ’ αὐτὰ σίδηρον, ἀλλ’ ἢ ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ φάγῃ, αὐτὸ δὲ οὐκ ἐκκόψεις. μὴ ἄνθρωπος τὸ ξύλον τὸ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ εἰσελθεῖν ἀπὸ προσώπου σου εἰς τὸν χάρακα;	19 Ἐὰν δὲ περικαθίσῃς περὶ πόλιν μίαν ἡμέρας πλείους ἐκπολεμῆσαι αὐτὴν εἰς κατάληψιν αὐτῆς, οὐκ ἐξολοθρεύσεις τὰ δένδρα αὐτῆς ἐπιβαλεῖν ἐπ’ αὐτὰ σίδηρον, ἀλλ’ ἢ ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ φαγῇ, αὐτὸ δὲ οὐκ ἐκκόψεις. μὴ ἄνθρωπος τὸ ξύλον τὸ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ εἰσελθεῖν ἀπὸ προσώπου σου εἰς τὸν χάρακα;
19 But if you besiege a city for many more days, to make war against it in order to take it, you shall not utterly destroy its trees by wielding iron against them; rather you shall eat from it, but you shall not cut it down.
