Yahweh Provides Manna

1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israēl came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the 15th day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

1 And they departed from Ailim, and the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Ailim and between Sina. And on the 15th day, in the second month, after they had gone out from Aigypt’s land, 1 And they departed from Aileim, and the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Aileim and between Sina. And on the 15th day, in the second month, after they had gone out from Aigypt’s land,

2 And the whole congregation of the sons of Israēl murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

2 the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl was complaining against Moses and Aarōn, 2 the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl was complaining against Moses and Aarōn,

3 And the sons of Israēl said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

3 and the sons of Israēl said to them, “If only we had died, struck by the Lord, in Aigypt’s land, when we sat at the cauldrons of meat and were eating bread to satisfaction, because you led us out into this wilderness to kill all this congregation by famine.” 3 and the sons of Israēl said to them, “If only we had died, struck by the Lord, in Aigypt’s land, when we sat at the cauldrons of meat and were eating bread to satisfaction, because you led us out into this wilderness to kill all this congregation by famine.”

4 Then said Yahweh to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or not.

4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Look! I am going to rain bread from the sky for you, and the people shall go out, and they shall collect the portion of the day for a day so that I might test them whether they will walk by my law or not. 4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Look! I am going to rain bread from the sky for you, and the people shall go out, and they shall collect the portion of the day for a day so that I might test them whether they will walk by my law or not.

5 And it will happen, that on the sixth day they shall prepare what they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”

5 And it shall be on the sixth day, and they shall prepare whatever they bring in, and it shall be double whatever they gather together daily for a day.” 5 And it shall be on the sixth day, and they shall prepare whatever they bring in, and it shall be double whatever they gather together daily for a day.”

6 And Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israēl, “At evening, then you shall know that Yahweh has brought you out from the land of Egypt.

6 Then Moses and Aarōn said to the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl, “At evening you shall know that the Lord brought you out of Aigypt’s land, 6 Then Moses and Aarōn said to the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl, “At evening you shall know that the Lord brought you out of Aigypt’s land,

7 And in the morning, then you shall see the glory of Yahweh; for that he hears your murmurings against Yahweh; and what are we, that you murmur against us?”

7 καὶ πρωῒ ὄψεσθε τὴν δόξαν κυρίου ἐν τῷ εἰσακοῦσαι τὸν γογγυσμὸν ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ· ἡμεῖς δὲ τί ἐσμεν ὅτι διαγογγύζετε καθ’ ἡμῶν; 7 καὶ πρωῒ ὄψεσθε τὴν δόξαν Κυρίου ἐν τῷ εἰσακοῦσαι τὸν γογγυσμὸν ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῷ Θεῷ· ἡμεῖς δὲ τί ἔσμεν ὅτι διαγογγύζετε καθ’ ἡμῶν;
7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, when he heard your complaining against God. But we, what are we that you complain against us?” 7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, when he heard your complaining against God. But we, what are we that you complain against us?”

Yahweh Provides Meat

8 And Moses said, “This shall be, when Yahweh shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that Yahweh hears your murmurings which you murmur against him; and what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against Yahweh.”

8 καὶ εἶπεν Μωυσῆς ἐν τῷ διδόναι κύριον ὑμῖν ἑσπέρας κρέα φαγεῖν καὶ ἄρτους τὸ πρωῒ εἰς πλησμονὴν διὰ τὸ εἰσακοῦσαι κύριον τὸν γογγυσμὸν ὑμῶν, ὃν ὑμεῖς διαγογγύζετε καθ’ ἡμῶν· ἡμεῖς δὲ τί ἐσμεν;
8 καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς· ἐν τῷ διδόναι Κύριον ὑμῖν ἑσπέρας κρέα φαγεῖν καὶ ἄρτους τὸ πρωῒ εἰς πλησμονὴν διὰ τὸ εἰσακοῦσαι Κύριον τὸν γογγυσμὸν ὑμῶν, ὃν ὑμεῖς διαγογγύζετε καθ’ ἡμῶν· ἡμεῖς δὲ τί ἔσμεν;
8 And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you meat in the evening to eat and bread in the morning to the full, because the Lord heard your complaining which you complain against us, then we, what are we? For your complaining is not against us, but rather against God.” 8 And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you meat in the evening to eat and bread in the morning to the full, because the Lord heard your complaining which you complain against us, then we, what are we? For your complaining is not against us, but rather against God.”

9 And Moses spoke to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israēl, ‘Come near before Yahweh; for he has heard your murmurings.’ ”

9 And Moses said to Aarōn, “Say to the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl, Approach before God. For he has heard your complaining.” 9 And Moses said to Aarōn, “Say to the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl, Approach before God. For he has heard your complaining.”

10 And it happened, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israēl, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of Yahweh appeared in the cloud.

10 And when Aarōn was speaking to the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl, they also turned about toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in a cloud. 10 And when Aarōn was speaking to the entire congregation of the sons of Israēl, they also turned about toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in a cloud.

11 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

12 “I have heard the murmurings of the sons of Israēl: speak to them, saying, ‘at evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your Elohim.’ ”

12 “I have heard the complaining of the sons of Israēl. Speak to them, saying, toward evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord, your God.” 12 “I have heard the complaining of the sons of Israēl. Speak to them, saying, toward evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord, your God.”

13 And it happened, that at evening the quails came up, and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay all around the army.

13 So evening came, and the quail came up and covered the camp. Then morning came, when the dew was ceasing to exist around the camp, 13 So evening came, and the quail came up and covered the camp. Then morning came, when the dew was ceasing to exist around the camp,

14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, on the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the grey frost on the ground.

14 and look, on the surface of the wilderness was something fine like coriander, white like frost on the ground. 14 and look, on the surface of the wilderness was something fine like coriander, white like frost on the ground.

15 And when the sons of Israēl saw it, they said one to another, “It is manna”; for they didn’t know what it was. And Moses said to them, “This is the bread which Yahweh has given you to eat.

15 ἰδόντες δὲ αὐτὸ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ εἶπαν ἕτερος τῷ ἑτέρῳ τί ἐστιν τοῦτο;
15 ἰδόντες δὲ αὐτὸ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ εἶπαν ἕτερος τῷ ἑτέρῳ· τί ἔστι τοῦτο;
15 And after they saw it, the sons of Israēl said one to the other, “What is this?” For they didn’t know what it was. Then Moses said to them, “This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. 15 And after they saw it, the sons of Israēl said one to the other, “What is this?” For they didn’t know what it was. Then Moses said to them, “This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.

16 This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded, ‘Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; each man of you take for those who are in his tents.’ ”

16 This is the thing that the Lord instructed, ‛Each (of you) gather from it what is necessary, a gomor per head according to the number of your souls, each of you collect with your tent mates.’ ” 16 This is the thing that the Lord instructed, ‛Each (of you) gather from it what is necessary, a gomor per head according to the number of your souls, each of you collect with your tent mates.’ ”

17 And the sons of Israēl did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

17 And the sons of Israēl did so, and they collected, the one much and the other less. 17 And the sons of Israēl did so, and they collected, the one much and the other less.

18 And when they measured it with an omer, he who gathered much had nothing over, and he who gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

18 And they measured by the gomor. The one with much didn’t have excess, and the one with less didn’t have too little. Each person collected for those appropriate for his own place. 18 And they measured by the gomor. The one with much didn’t have excess, and the one with less didn’t have too little. Each person collected for those appropriate for his own place.

19 And Moses said, “Let no man leave of it till the morning.”

19 Then Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it until the morning.” 19 Then Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it until the morning.”

20 Notwithstanding they didn’t listen to Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank; and Moses was wroth with them.

20 And they didn’t listen to Moses, but certain ones left some of it until the morning. And it bred worms and stank, and Moses was irritated with them. 20 And they didn’t listen to Moses, but certain ones left some of it until the morning. And it bred worms and stank, and Moses was irritated with them.

21 And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating; and when the sun grew hot, it melted.

21 And they collected it morning by morning, each person what was appropriate for him. But when the sun was warming up, it melted. 21 And they collected it morning by morning, each person what was appropriate for him. But when the sun was warming up, it melted.

The Sabbath Observed

22 And it happened, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man; and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

22 But it happened on the sixth day, they collected double what was required, two gomors for one person. And all the leaders of the congregation went in and reported to Moses. 22 But it happened on the sixth day, they collected double what was required, two gomors for one person. And all the leaders of the congregation went in and reported to Moses.

23 And he said to them, “This is what Yahweh has said, ‘Tomorrow is the rest of the holy sabbath to Yahweh: bake what you will bake today, and seethe that you will seethe; and what remains over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.’ ”

23 εἶπεν δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς αὐτούς τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμά ἐστιν, ἐλάλησεν κύριος· σάββατα ἀνάπαυσις ἁγία τῷ κυρίῳ αὔριον· ὅσα ἐὰν πέσσητε, πέσσετε, καὶ ὅσα ἐὰν ἕψητε, ἕψετε· καὶ πᾶν τὸ πλεονάζον καταλίπετε αὐτὸ εἰς ἀποθήκην εἰς τὸ πρωί. 23 εἶπε δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς αὐτούς· οὐ τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμά ἐστιν, ὃν ἐλάλησε Κύριος;
23 And Moses said to them, “This is the word that the Lord spoke, Tomorrow is Sabbata, a rest holy to the Lord. Whatever you bake, bake, and whatever you boil, boil. And all the excess, leave it in storage until the morning.” 23 And Moses said to them, “This is the word that the Lord spoke, Tomorrow is Sabbata, a rest holy to the Lord. Whatever you bake, bake, and whatever you boil, boil. And all the excess, leave it in storage until the morning.”

24 And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses commanded; and it didn’t stink, neither was there any worm in it.

24 And they left some of it until the morning, just as Moses instructed them. And it didn’t stink, nor was there a worm in it. 24 And they left some of it until the morning, just as Moses instructed them. And it didn’t stink, nor was there a worm in it.

25 And Moses said, “Eat that today; for today is a sabbath to Yahweh: today you shall not find it in the field.

25 And Moses said, “Eat today! For today is Sabbata to the Lord. It will not be found on the plain. 25 And Moses said, “Eat today! For today is Sabbata to the Lord. It will not be found on the plain.

26 Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.”

26 Six days you will collect, but on the seventh day is Sabbata. There will be none on it.” 26 Six days you will collect, but on the seventh day is Sabbata. There will be none on it.”

27 And it happened, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.

27 And it happened on the seventh day, some of the people went out to collect, and they found none. 27 And it happened on the seventh day, some of the people went out to collect, and they found none.

28 And Yahweh said to Moses, “How long refuse you to keep my commandments and my laws?

28 εἶπεν δὲ κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἕως τίνος οὐ βούλεσθε εἰσακούειν τὰς ἐντολάς μου καὶ τὸν νόμον μου; 28 εἶπε δὲ Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν· ἕως τίνος οὐ βούλεσθε εἰσακούειν τὰς ἔντολάς μου καὶ τὸν νόμον μου;
28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “For how long are you unwilling to listen to my commandments and my law? 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “For how long are you unwilling to listen to my commandments and my law?

29 See, for that Yahweh has given you the sabbath, therefore he gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.”

29 See! For the Lord has given you this day, the sabbaths. Therefore he gave you bread for two days on the sixth day. Sit, each person, in your homes; don’t let anyone go out from his place on the seventh day.” 29 See! For the Lord has given you this day, the sabbaths. Therefore he gave you bread for two days on the sixth day. Sit, each person, in your homes; don’t let anyone go out from his place on the seventh day.”

30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

30 And the people kept sabbath on the seventh day. 30 And the people kept sabbath on the seventh day.
