The Song of Moses and Israēl
1 Then sang Moses and the sons of Israēl this song to Yahweh, and spoke, saying, “I will sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider has he thrown into the sea.
1 Then Moses and the sons of Israēl sang this song to God and spoke, saying, “Let us sing to the Lord, for gloriously he has glorified himself; he threw horse and rider into the sea. | 1 Then Moses and the sons of Israēl sang this song to God and spoke, saying, “Let us sing to the Lord, for gloriously he has glorified himself; he threw horse and rider into the sea. |
2 Yahweh is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him a habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
2 He has become helper and defender to me for deliverance; this is my God, and I will glorify him; my father’s God, and I will exalt him. | 2 He has become helper and defender to me for deliverance; this is my God, and I will glorify him; my father’s God, and I will exalt him. |
3 Yahweh is a man of war: Yahweh is his name.
3
3 When the Lord shatters wars, his name is the Lord. | 3 When the Lord shatters wars, his name is the Lord. |
4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army has he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red Sea.
4 He threw the chariots of Pharaō and his forces into the sea; he drowned choice riders, third-ranked leaders in the Red Sea. | 4 He threw the chariots of Pharaō and his forces into the sea; he drowned choice riders, third-ranked leaders in the Red Sea. |
5 The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.
5 He covered them with the open sea; they sank down into the deep like a stone. | 5 He covered them with the open sea; they sank down into the deep like a stone. |
6 Your right hand, Oh Yahweh, is become glorious in power: your right hand, Oh Yahweh, has dashed in pieces the enemy.
6 Your right hand, O Lord, has been glorified in power; your right hand, O Lord, crushed enemies. | 6 Your right hand, O Lord, has been glorified in power; your right hand, O Lord, crushed enemies. |
7 And in the greatness of your excellency you have overthrown those who rose up against you: you sent forth your wrath, which consumed them as stubble.
7 And in the abundance of your glory you shattered the adversaries; you sent your anger, and it consumed them like stubble. | 7 And in the abundance of your glory you shattered the adversaries; you sent your anger, and it consumed them like stubble. |
8 And with the blast of your nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as a heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.
8 And through the breath of your wrath the water divided; the waters were congealed like a wall; the waves were congealed in the midst of the sea. | 8 And through the breath of your wrath the water divided; the waters were congealed like a wall; the waves were congealed in the midst of the sea. |
9 The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied on them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.’
9 The enemy said, ‛When I pursue, I will overtake; I will divide spoils; I will satisfy my soul; I will destroy with my dagger; my hand shall dominate.’ | 9 The enemy said, ‛When I pursue, I will overtake; I will divide spoils; I will satisfy my soul; I will destroy with my dagger; my hand shall dominate.’ |
10 You blew with your wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters.
10 You sent your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in turbulent water. | 10 You sent your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in turbulent water. |
11 Who is like to you, Oh Yahweh, among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

11 Who is like you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like you, glorified among holy ones, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? | 11 Who is like you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like you, glorified among holy ones, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? |
12 You stretched out your right hand, the earth swallowed them.
12 You stretched out your right hand, the earth swallowed them up. | 12 You stretched out your right hand, the earth swallowed them up. |
13 You in your mercy have led forth the people which you have redeemed: you have guided them in your strength to your holy habitation.
13 By your righteousness, you led this people of yours whom you redeemed; by your strength, you called them into your holy guest room. | 13 By your righteousness, you led this people of yours whom you redeemed; by your strength, you called them into your holy guest room. |
14 The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.
14 Nations heard and became angry; pangs seized those dwelling among the Phylistiim. | 14 Nations heard and became angry; pangs seized those dwelling among the Phylistiim. |
15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold on them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.
15 Then leaders of Edōm and rulers of the Mōabites hurried away, trembling seized them; all those inhabiting Chanaan melted away. | 15 Then leaders of Edōm and rulers of the Mōabites hurried away, trembling seized them; all those inhabiting Chanaan melted away. |
16 Fear and dread shall fall on them; by the greatness of your arm they shall be as still as a stone; till your people pass over, Oh Yahweh, till the people pass over, which you have purchased.
16 May fear and trembling fall on them; by the greatness of your arm let them be turned into stone until your people should pass by, O Lord, until this people of yours, whom you acquired, should pass by. | 16 May fear and trembling fall on them; by the greatness of your arm let them be turned into stone until your people should pass by, O Lord, until this people of yours, whom you acquired, should pass by. |
17 You shall bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, in the place, Oh Yahweh, which you have made for you to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, Oh Lord, which your hands have established.
17 After leading them in, plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, in your prepared dwelling place that you produced, O Lord, a sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands prepared. | 17 After leading them in, plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, in your prepared dwelling place that you produced, O Lord, a sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands prepared. |
18 Yahweh shall reign forever and ever.”
18 The Lord reigns forever and ever and ever.” | 18 The Lord reigns forever and ever and ever.” |
19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and Yahweh brought again the waters of the sea on them; but the sons of Israēl went on dry land in the midst of the sea.
19 Because the cavalry of Pharaō together with chariots and riders went into the sea, the Lord also brought the water of the sea on them, but the sons of Israēl walked through dry land in the midst of the sea. | 19 Because the cavalry of Pharaō together with chariots and riders went into the sea, the Lord also brought the water of the sea on them, but the sons of Israēl walked through dry land in the midst of the sea. |
20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
20 Then Mariam, the prophetess, the sister of Aarōn, took the timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dances. | 20 Then Mariam, the prophetess, the sister of Aarōn, took the timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dances. |
21 And Miriam answered them, “Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider has he thrown into the sea.”
21 And Mariam acted as song leader saying, “Let us sing to the Lord, for gloriously he has glorified himself. He threw horse and rider into the sea.” | 21 And Mariam acted as song leader saying, “Let us sing to the Lord, for gloriously he has glorified himself. He threw horse and rider into the sea.” |
Yahweh Provides Water
22 So Moses brought Israēl from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.
22 Then Moses moved out the sons of Israēl from the Red Sea and led them into the wilderness of Sour. And they were travelling for three days in the wilderness and were not finding water to drink. | 22 Then Moses moved out the sons of Israēl from the Red Sea and led them into the wilderness of Sour. And they were travelling for three days in the wilderness and were not finding water to drink. |
23 And when they came to Marah, they couldn’t drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter; therefore its name was called Marah.
23 And they came to Merra and were unable to drink water from Merra, for it was bitter. Therefore the name of that place was called Bitterness . | 23 And they came to Merra and were unable to drink water from Merra, for it was bitter. Therefore the name of that place was called Bitterness . |
24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”
24 And the people were complaining against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” | 24 And the people were complaining against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” |
25 And he cried to Yahweh; and Yahweh showed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

25 Then Moses called to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There he set for him statutes and judgments, and there he tested him. | 25 Then Moses called to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. 26 And said, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of Yahweh your Elohim, and will do what is right in his sight, and will give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases on you, which I have brought on the Egyptians; for I am Yahweh that heals you.”
26 And he said, “If you by paying attention listen to the voice of the Lord, your God, and do pleasing things before him, and give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, every sickness which I brought on the Aigyptians, I will not bring on you. For I am the Lord who heals you.” | 26 And he said, “If you by paying attention listen to the voice of the Lord, your God, and do pleasing things before him, and give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, every sickness which I brought on the Aigyptians, I will not bring on you. 27 And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and 70 palm trees; and they encamped there by the waters.
