Chapter 21

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Birth of Isaac

1 And Yahweh visited Sarah as he had said, and Yahweh did to Sarah as he had spoken.

1 And the Lord visited Sarra, just as he said, and the Lord did to Sarra, just as he spoke. 1 And the Lord visited Sarra, just as he said, and the Lord did to Sarra, just as he spoke.

2 For Sarah conceived, and to Abraham she gave birth to a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

2 And she conceived and gave birth to a son for Abraham in old age, at the season just as the Lord spoke to him. 2 And she conceived and gave birth to a son for Abraham in old age, at the season just as the Lord spoke to him.

3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah gave birth to him, Isaac.

3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarra gave birth to him, Isaac. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarra gave birth to him, Isaac.

4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.

4 And Abraham circumcised Isaac on the eighth day, as God commanded him. 4 And Abraham circumcised Isaac on the eighth day, as God commanded him.

5 And Abraham was 100 years old, when his son Isaac was born to him.

5 And Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac his son was born to him. 5 And Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac his son was born to him.

6 And Sarah said, “God has made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.”

6 And Sarra said, “The Lord has made laughter for me, for whoever will hear will rejoice with me.” 6 And Sarra said, “The Lord has made laughter for me, for whoever will hear will rejoice with me.”

7 And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? For I have born him a son in his old age.”

7 καὶ εἶπεν, τίς ἀναγγελεῖ τῷ Ἁβραὰμ ὅτι θηλάζει παιδίον Σάρρα;
7 καὶ εἶπε· τίς ἀναγγελεῖ τῷ Ἁβραάμ, ὅτι θηλάζει παιδίον Σάρρα;
7 And she said, “Who will report to Abraham that Sarra suckles a child? for I have born a child in my old age.” 7 And she said, “Who will report to Abraham that Sarra suckles a child? for I have born a child in my old age.”

8 And the child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.

8 And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that his son Isaac was weaned. 8 And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that his son Isaac was weaned.

Sarah and Hagar

9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had born to Abraham, mocking.

9 When Sarra saw the son of Agar the Aigypt, who was born to Abraham, playing with Isaac her son, 9 When Sarra saw the son of Agar the Aigypt, who was born to Abraham, playing with Isaac her son,

10 Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.”

10 she said to Abraham, “Cast out this female servant and her son, for the son of this female servant will not inherit with my son Isaac.” 10 she said to Abraham, “Cast out this female servant and her son, for the son of this female servant will not inherit with my son Isaac.”

11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son.

11 But in the opinion of Abraham, the thing concerning his son appeared very serious. 11 But in the opinion of Abraham, the thing concerning his son appeared very serious.

12 And God said to Abraham, “Let it not be grievous in your sight because of the lad, and because of your bondwoman; in all that Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac shall your seed be called.

12 But God said to Abraham, “Don’t let the thing be severe in your opinion concerning the child, and concerning the female servant; all that Sarra said to you, obey her voice, for in Isaac will your offspring be called. 12 But God said to Abraham, “Don’t let the thing be severe in your opinion concerning the child, and concerning the female servant; all that Sarra said to you, obey her voice, for in Isaac will your offspring be called.

13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is your seed.”

13 And I will make the son of this female servant a great nation, because he is your offspring.” 13 And moreover I will make the son of this female servant a great nation, because he is your offspring.”

14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

14 And Abraham rose up in the morning and took bread and a skin of water, and gave them to Agar, and he put the child on her shoulder, and sent her away, and after she departed she wandered in the wilderness near the well of the oath. 14 And Abraham rose up in the morning and took bread and a skin of water, and gave them to Agar, and he put the child on her shoulder, and sent her away, and after she departed she wandered in the wilderness near the well of the oath.

15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.

15 And the water from the skin was used up, and she laid down the child under one fir tree. 15 And the water from the skin was used up, and she laid down the child under one fir tree.

16 And she went, and sat down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot; for she said, “Let me not see the death of the child.” And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.

16 And she departed and sat down in front of him far away, as it were a bow-shot, for she said, “Surely I cannot see the death of my child.” and she sat in front of him, and the child shouted and wept. 16 And she departed and sat down in front of him far away, as it were a bow-shot, for she said, “Surely I cannot see the death of my child.” and she sat in front of him, and the child shouted and wept.

17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.

17 εἰσήκουσεν δὲ θεὸς τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ παιδίου ἐκ τοῦ τόπου, οὗ ἦν, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ τὴν Ἄγαρ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ, τί ἐστιν, Ἄγαρ;
17 εἰσήκουσε δὲ Θεὸς τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ παιδίου ἐκ τοῦ τόπου, οὗ ἦν, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ἄγγελος Θεοῦ τὴν Ἄγαρ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ εἶπε αὐτῇ· τί ἐστιν Ἄγαρ;
17 And God listened to the voice of the child from the place where he was, and an angel of God called Agar out of the sky, and said to her, “What is it, Agar? Don’t fear, for God has heard the voice of the child from the place where he is. 17 And God listened to the voice of the child from the place where he was, and an angel of God called Agar out of the sky, and said to her, “What is it, Agar? Don’t fear, for God has heard the voice of the child from the place where he is.

18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in your hand; for I will make him a great nation.”

18 Rise up, take the child, and hold him in your hand, for I will make him a great nation.” 18 Rise up, take the child, and hold him in your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”

19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.

19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of life-giving water; and she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the child drink. 19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of life-giving water; and she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the child drink.

20 And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

20 And God was with the child, and he grew up and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. 20 And God was with the child, and he grew up and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

21 And he dwelt in the Pharan wilderness, and his mother took a wife for him out of Aigypt’s land. 21 And he dwelt in the Pharan wilderness, and his mother took a wife for him out of Aigypt’s land.

Covenant with Abimelech

22 And it happened at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his army spoke to Abraham, saying,

God is with you in all that you do.

22 And it happened at that time that Abimelech and Ochozath his best friend, and Phichol the chief captain of his forces, spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all things, whatever you might do. 22 And it happened at that time that Abimelech and Ochozath his best friend, and Phichol the chief captain of his forces, spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all things, whatever you might do.

23 “Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son; but according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to the land in which you have stayed.”

23 Now therefore solemnly promise to me by God that you will not injure me, nor my offspring, nor my name, but according to the righteousness which I dealt with you, you will deal with me, and with the land in which you resided.” 23 Now therefore solemnly promise to me by God that you will not injure me, nor my offspring, nor my name, but according to the righteousness which I dealt with you, you will deal with me, and with the land in which you resided.”

24 And Abraham said, “I will swear.”

24 And Abraham said, “I will solemnly promise.” 24 And Abraham said, “I will solemnly promise.”

25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.

25 And Abraham rebuked Abimelech concerning the wells of water, which the servants of Abimelech seized. 25 And Abraham rebuked Abimelech concerning the wells of water, which the servants of Abimelech seized.

26 And Abimelech said, “I don’t know who has done this thing: neither did you tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but today.”

26 And Abimelech said to him, “I don’t know who has done this thing, nor did you report it to me, nor have I heard it but today.” 26 And Abimelech said to him, “I don’t know who has done this thing, nor did you report it to me, nor have I heard it but today.”

27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them to Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant.

27 And Abraham took sheep and calves, and gave to Abimelech, and both arranged a treaty. 27 And Abraham took sheep and calves, and gave to Abimelech, and both arranged a treaty.

28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

28 And Abraham set seven ewe-lambs of the sheep apart. 28 And Abraham set seven ewe-lambs of the sheep apart.

29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What mean these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves?”

29 καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβιμέλεχ τῷ Ἁβραάμ, τί εἰσιν αἱ ἑπτὰ ἀμνάδες τῶν προβάτων τούτων, ἃς ἔστησας μόνας; 29 καὶ εἶπε Ἀβιμέλεχ τῷ Ἁβραάμ· τί εἰσιν αἱ ἑπτὰ ἀμνάδες τῶν προβάτων τούτων, ἃς ἔστησας μόνας;
29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What are these seven ewe-lambs from the sheep which you have set apart?” 29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What are these seven ewe-lambs from the sheep which you have set apart?”

30 And he said, “For these seven ewe lambs you shall take of my hand, that they may be a witness to me, that I have dug this well.”

30 And Abraham said, “Because you shall receive these seven ewe-lambs from me, in order that they may be a witness for me, that I dug this well.” 30 And Abraham said, “Because you shall receive the seven ewe-lambs from me, in order that they may be a witness for me, that I dug this well.”

31 Therefore he called that place Beer-sheba; because there they swore both of them.

31 Therefore he named the name of that place, The Well of Oath, because they both solemnly promised there. 31 Therefore he named the name of that place, The Well of Oath, because they both solemnly promised there.

32 Thus they made a covenant at Beer-sheba: then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his army, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.

32 And they made a treaty at the Well of the Oath. And there rose up Abimelech, Ochozath his best friend, and Phichol the commander-in-chief of his forces, and they returned into the land of the Phylistines. 32 And they made a treaty at the Well of the Oath. And there rose up Abimelech, Ochozath his best friend, and Phichol the commander-in-chief of his forces, and they returned into the land of the Phylistines.

33 And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of Yahweh, the everlasting God.

33 And Abraham planted a field by the Well of the Oath, and called on the name of the everlasting Lord God there. 33 And Abraham planted a field by the Well of the Oath, and called on the name of the everlasting Lord God there.

34 And Abraham stayed in the Philistines’ land many days.

34 And Abraham dwelt in the land of the Phylistines many days. 34 And Abraham dwelt in the land of the Phylistines many days.
