Chapter 20

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Abraham and Abimelech

1 And Abraham journeyed from there toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar.

1 And Abraham moved from there to a land toward the south, and dwelt between Cadēs and Sour, and stayed in Gerara. 1 And Abraham moved from there to a land toward the south, and dwelt between Cadēs and Sour, and stayed in Gerara.

2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister”; and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.

2 And Abraham said concerning Sarra his wife, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “She is my wife,” lest at any time the men of the city might kill him because of her. So Abimelech king of Gerara sent and took Sarra. 2 And Abraham said concerning Sarra his wife, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “She is my wife,” lest at any time the men of the city might kill him because of her. So Abimelech king of Gerara sent and took Sarra.

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Behold, you are but a dead man, for the woman whom you have taken; for she is a man’s wife.”

3 And God came to Abimelech by night in sleep, and said, “Look! you are dying on account of the woman, whom you took, but she has lived with a husband.” 3 And God came to Abimelech by night in sleep, and said, “Look! you are dying on account of the woman, whom you took, but she has lived with a husband.”

4 But Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, “Lord, will you slay also a righteous nation?”

4 Ἀβιμέλεχ δὲ οὐχ ἥψατο αὐτῆς καὶ εἶπεν κύριε, ἔθνος ἀγνοοῦν καὶ δίκαιον ἀπολεῖς; 4 Ἀβιμέλεχ δὲ οὐχ ἥψατο αὐτῆς καὶ εἶπε· Κύριε, ἔθνος ἀγνοοῦν καὶ δίκαιον ἀπολεῖς;
4 But Abimelech didn’t touch her, and he said, “Lord, will you destroy an unaware and righteous nation? 4 But Abimelech didn’t touch her, and he said, “Lord, will you destroy an unaware and righteous nation?

5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister?’ and she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.”

5 οὐκ αὐτός μοι εἶπεν, ἀδελφή μού ἐστιν;
5 οὐκ αὐτός μοι εἶπε, ἀδελφή μου ἐστί;
καὶ αὕτη μοι εἶπε, ἀδελφός μου ἐστίν;
5 Didn’t he say to me, ‛She is my sister,’ and didn’t she say to me, ‛He is my brother?’ With a pure heart and in the righteousness of my hands I did this.” 5 Didn’t he say to me, ‛She is my sister,’ and didn’t she say to me, ‛He is my brother?’ With a pure heart and in the righteousness of my hands I did this.”

6 And God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart; for I also withheld you from sinning against me; therefore I did not allow you to touch her.

6 And God said to him in sleep, “Because with a pure heart you did this, and I spared you, so that you might not sin against me, therefore I didn’t allow you to touch her. 6 And God said to him in sleep, “Because with a pure heart you did this, and I spared you, so that you might not sin against me, therefore I didn’t allow you to touch her.

7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for you, and you shall live; and if you don’t restore her, know that you shall surely die, you, and all that are yours.”

7 But now restore the woman to the man; becayse he is a prophet, and shall pray for you, and you will live; but if you don’t restore, know that you will die and all yours.” 7 But now restore the woman to the man; becayse he is a prophet, and shall pray for you, and you will live; but if you don’t restore, you will know that you will die and all yours.”

8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears; and the men were very afraid.

8 And Abimelech arose in the morning, and called all his servants, and he spoke all these words in their ears, and all the men feared exceedingly. 8 And Abimelech arose in the morning, and called all his servants, and he spoke all these words in their ears, and all the men feared exceedingly.

9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, “What have you done to us? And in what have I offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that anything not to be done.”

9 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἀβιμέλεχ τὸν Ἁβραὰμ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν;
μή τι ἡμάρτομεν εἰς σέ, ὅτι ἐπήγαγες ἐπ’ ἐμὲ καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν βασιλείαν μου ἁμαρτίαν μεγάλην;
9 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἀβιμέλεχ τὸν Ἁβραάμ, καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν;
μήτι ἡμάρτομεν εἰς σέ, ὅτι ἐπήγαγες ἐπ’ ἐμὲ καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν βασιλείαν μου ἁμαρτίαν μεγάλην;
9 And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What is this that you have done to us? Did we sin against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done a deed to me which no one should do.” 9 And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What is this that you have done to us? Did we sin against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done a deed to me which no one should do.”

10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you have done this thing?”

10 εἶπεν δὲ Ἀβιμέλεχ τῷ Ἁβραάμ, τί ἐνιδὼν ἐποίησας τοῦτο; 10 εἶπε δὲ Ἀβιμέλεχ τῷ Ἁβραάμ· τί ἐνιδὼν ἐποίησας τοῦτο;
10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see that you did this?” 10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see that you did this?”

11 And Abraham said, “Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.

11 And Abraham said, “For I said, therefore there isn’t godliness in this place, and they will kill me for the sake of my wife. 11 And Abraham said, “For I said, therefore there isn’t godliness in this place, and they will kill me for the sake of my wife.

12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

12 For she is truly my sister by my father, but not by mother, and she became my wife.” 12 For she is truly my sister by my father, but not by mother, and she became my wife.”

13 And it happened, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is your kindness which you shall show to me; at every place where we shall come, say of me, “He is my brother.”’ ”

13 And it happened when God brought me out of my father’s house, that I said to her, ‛You will do this righteousness for me in every place into which we may enter there, say about me, He is my brother.’ ” 13 And it happened when God brought me out of my father’s house, that I said to her, ‛You will do this righteousness for me in every place into which we may enter there, say about me, He is my brother.’ ”

14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored to him Sarah his wife.

14 And Abimelech took 1000 double-drachmas, sheep, and calves, and male-servants, and female-servants, and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarra his wife to him. 14 And Abimelech took 1000 double-drachmas, sheep, and calves, and male-servants, and female-servants, and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarra his wife to him.

15 And Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you: dwell where it pleases you.”

15 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “Look! my land is before you, dwell wherever it pleases you.” 15 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “Look! my land is before you, dwell wherever it pleases you.”

16 And to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother 1000 pieces of silver: behold, he is to you a covering of the eyes, to all that are with you, and with all other.” Thus she was reproved.

16 And to Sarra he said, “Look! I have given 1000 double-drachmas to your brother, those are for you for the honour of your face and all women with you; and declare the truth about all things.” 16 And to Sarra he said, “Look! I have given 1000 double-drachmas to your brother, those are for you for the honour of your face and all women with you; and declare the truth about all things.”

17 So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they gave birth to children.

17 And Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife, and his female servants; and they gave birth to children. 17 And Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife, and his female servants; and they gave birth to children.

18 For Yahweh had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham’s wife.

18 Because in closing, the Lord had closed from the outside every womb in the house of Abimelech for the sake of Sarra, Abraham’s wife. 18 Because in closing, the Lord had closed from the outside every womb in the house of Abimelech for the sake of Sarra, Abraham’s wife.
